The Orange County homeless population has skyrocketed in recent years
Homeless is an indicator of great economy.
True indeed
Its actually true though homelessness always goes up in a good economy because costs are going up and the people who have the least possible equity has the most problems transitioning when the economy is moving fast.
When you have a recession, you almost always have more housing supply since people aren't flipping houses and shit so it's more or less always going to be easier on homeless people when the economy is rather stagnant and essentially nothing is changing because they can't adapt fast.
When more people live on the streets, economy good!
I forgot the part in the great depression where everyone became housed
Lots of losers implies lots of winners. /s
That’s because of the social reforms enacted during Roosevelt administration but you can’t even think of anything social in this country without people lighting themselves on fire screaming bloody SOCIALISM!! So…. There’s that.
My favorite president. Confiscated the gold from the public, then the Fed revalued it from $20 to $35. He was extra nice when he sent millions of Americans to die in WW2 too. What a swell guy.
Leaving the gold standard really was a bad idea. It essentially made debt the primary means of growth within an economy, rather than Innovation.
P.s. before anyone gets on me intonation is still needed for an economy to grow but it is no longer the biggest contributor to that growth.
Id say we have 35 trillion reasons that we shouldn't have left the gold standard. Good for the central banks and company, bad for the masses.
Ah yes, the good ‘ol’ gold standard. Fail safe that system was. If we were on that system we’d all be filthy rich and those damn money printing companies would be so out of business!! I mean, it’s not like gold is finite or anything right? And what does scarcity do? Then what does the result of that encourage? Is it increased value and hoarding? Both systems have major flaws.
We wouldn't be filthy rich, but we wouldn't have an economy controlled solely by a central bank. The wealth gap would be much smaller. The result of sound money that can't be printed is stable prices and not a constant rising cost of living. Government corruption wouldn't be so rampant, bail outs wouldn't be a thing, and natural recession cycles could occur producing new ideas and better businesses. There wouldn't be wild booms and busts. Zero hyperinflation and over expansion of economies because it is driven by debt. There would be better balance in the economy and it wouldn't feel like a rat race for the shrinking middle class.
Im not saying fiat currency is the way to go or the answer but I’m not sure that using something that is limited in supply as currency would make things any better. Rich people hoard their money, why wouldn’t they hoard gold. If the gold supply is limited then somebody’s going to be left with nothing. Would that create deflation? And isn’t that also a bad thing? Idk I’m not an economist. Not sure if the new deal would have been possible without the switch either. It’d be nice to have a solution 😄
Bidens 2024 campaign slogan
“Money talks- bullshit walks.” Is even better! Or -“ move freeloaders into a camp!!!”
California invested billions in homelessness, i just didn’t realize that meant they were investing in it as a growth stock
👍🏼🤣
It's because the people in charge of solving homelessness have a vested interest in not solving the problem because they would be out of a job
Nope. It’s a complex problem. Starts and ends with actually making affordable housing available to those who need it. Zoning, NIMBYISM, airbnbs taking up space, mega corporations buying up housing and jacking up the price. Drugs and Mental Health are intersecting problems, but not necessarily the cause. To fair, people telling me I am part of the ‘homeless industrial complex’ (I’m a social worker), plus the low wages and hard work made me stop working in homeless services. I hope you never experience homelessness because I guarantee that would humble you and disabuse you of your retched opinion. I want housing for homeless people that give them both freedom and dignity. Thanks for my Ted talk
The cause is unaffordable overpriced housing.
Many of the homeless would trash any housing given to them without 24/7 supervision, it's not just a housing thing. Bring back institutions
That’s classist bigotry.
No, it's common sense, you bleeding heart idiot. Apparently you know nothing about the homeless
I’ve been homeless. I’m pretty sure I know more than you, you giant douche.
Have fun under your bridge, troll
Boomers expecting gold to fund their retirements
I've been homeless, you know what the difference is? I decided I didn't want to be like that anymore and I fixed my shit. I don't want to hear it, yes the mentally ill need treatment but the ones that just want to be fucked up and make a nuisance of themselves in public should be in jail
I've been homeless
All I needed to read to know that you're full of shit and decided to pull the lowest hanging fruit when called out. Be a better person, it costs nothing.
How about go fuck yourself, you know nothing about me or anywhere I've been on anything I've done. The one thing I can say is you're just a pity party looking for an excuse why your life sucks and you fail at everything while I've gone through some rough shit and come out on top because of my own doing. Cope harder
you're just a pity party looking for an excuse why your life sucks
This is such an odd projection on your part. I'm not sure the correlation between calling you out and somehow I am looking for a pity party? It really sounds like you need a lot of help to cope with your identity struggles and I do hope you get that.
Good call: you'll surely avoid that "homeless-industrial" incentives problem by handing things over to criminal justice
So you think it's ok to leave them up to their own devices and shit in the street and shoot up in public? You think it's cool that they're basically given carte blanche to rob and shoplift with impunity? No, the addicts should be given a choice between inpatient drug treatment or jail, and the criminals should be arrested and held. The way things are now is bullshit
Well good for you deciding not to be homeless one day. Must have been a dumb day for you the day you decided to be homeless. Glad you decided not to be as stupid as the day you decided being homeless was a good idea. 🙂.
Yeah I stopped doing the stupid shit that led me to that situation, if I could do it, so can other people. But you know what I didn't do? Make my problem other people's problem. If you're being disruptive you need to be dealt with
Humble you. This.
During COVID UK..EVERY homeless person was homed. the.end
Omg, standing ovation. Well said 👏🏽 the harshest critics of homelessness have no idea the complexity or the reality who is homeless and how they got there. Anyone can become homeless. In downtown LA we have so much unused space that is sitting vacant waiting for luxury tenants to move in while just a few blocks away people are sleeping in the street. It’s painful. The streets are painful.
That all sounds good, but I think the homeless rate is similar to what it was 20 or 40 years ago versus much has changed.
You have to expect a couple hundred thousand people out of like 200 million adults are just chronically homeless and you know it's really hard to fix or have much impact on it and then a certain number on top of that are homeless because of changing economic conditions that they can't transition fast enough to Not get screwed.
What I'm saying is like homelessness is less than than .37% of the adult population and you're not gonna get that much lower without universal income or free housing for everybody.
I think it's more like there's just a small percentage of people that are always going to be homeless and that winds up mounting to about 400,000 people circulating through the homeless population at any given time and then another 200,000 based on you have like a economy, homelessness or a recession homelessness down. You can look at homelessness stats and you see like they never really go down that low. It's like there's a reserved percentage of people that are always going to be homeless and a good chunk of them want to be homeless or essentially don't want to try hard enough to be anything but homeless.
Even with rising population hopelessness is about the same amount. It was 20 years ago and it probably isn't that much different than it was 20 years before that because there's s small chunk of people that always stay homeless no matter what.
Keep in mind you're talking about like 158 million Americans employed and like 600,000 homeless. It's not even half a percent.
That's true, and you can't help people that don't want to be helped. That's my contention with allowing them to just run free causing havoc. The people who want help should get it but the ones that don't, who would rather be a menace to other people and cause trouble, should be held accountable and treated accordingly. If they're just homeless and not bothering anyone, then fine, let them do their thing. But we all know that's a minimal percentage of them
Not being allowed to build their own homes makes some people go insane. It's very cruel to pull building your own space away and say it has to be given to someone else to do for you.
They're not being allowed to build their own homes.
"If you want more of something, subsidize it"
That’s why they all are shipped here, come here, or stay here… we try to help them, not kill them or make them disappear (into jails and prisons, into graves, or into programs they’ll never get out of because they need numbers to stay funded and keep all those cushy government jobs with government benefits going).
Also, everything about living outside here is better than anywhere else. There is also just more money around in the fourth largest economy in the world and it actually does trickle down to the street a lot more here than elsewhere… mostly because those of us on the coast, which we have an awful lot of, and in the big cities aren’t completely ignorant, arrogant, de-educated, indoctrinated pricks like most, more “rural” (this is what America’s version of calling blacks “urban” looks like in reverse) Americans
Jesus buddy if that helps you sleep at night run with that horse shit
Tell me how anything I just wrote is “horse shit”… buddy.
Your first paragraph is bananas. You actually said the California economy trickles down to the street as a selling point for being homeless there. Then your last few points are just elitist, delusional tribal bullshit. Such geniuses running your state that you actually make it a pride point to keep people living destitute on the street, unlike those dumb red necks in the rest of the country. Holy shit.
This is such a moronic comment that it is hard to even start replying.
Ahhh. Found one of you indoctrinated “CaLiFoRnIa BaD!” toxic red-neck man-children in the wild.
Your comment history is priceless. Enjoy your “alpha-male” rage scrolling… buddy.
Classic “ok my argument actually sucked so now I attack and deflect after scrolling comment history and call an Italian guy who grew up in a Massachusetts city a red neck” holy shit dude it’s easier just to say “yeah my argument was fucking stupid homelessness is actually bad in California”
You are the definition of the toxicity eating this nation alive.
Toxic red-neck man child is as toxic red-neck man-child does… “buddy.”
Homeless industrial complex is real. Leave it to California to make homelessness look luxurious.
Its what Democrats crave
Good
Thought it wasn’t allowed in the OC
After seeing taxes, I’d rather sleep in a tent too. Homeless will be the new meta.
They'll find a way to tax the sidewalk as prime downtown real estate.
Then they’ll tax you to piss on it
I’d be one of them if I didn’t decide sooner I needed to make a drastic change in my circumstances.
Start an OnlyFans
Makes sense. Just saw California’s population increased for the first time in years. This is helping I’d say.
So illegal immigrants raising population growth is helpful while California is losing all their corporate companies that pay the taxes? Yeah...fucking awesome. Get a grip on the economy
What.
Now look up who is moving there vs who is moving out
That money will be trickling down anytime now. . .
It's all part of the plan
Every city getting there share
Progressive Utopia
It's just 'camping'.
Orange County is one of several places with increasing homeless populations. SF, Denver, etc.
Thanks, Gavin.
There’s more to it than bad policy in Sacramento, but I will upvote anytime someone points out that Newsom is scum!!!
Orange County becomes more liberal in recent years?
It’s fine. I was told that I should be Ridin with Brandon!
How could this be Joe Biden is the best jobs president ever! Misinformation!
Capitalism. It’s not because there are so many social programs. Silicon Valley raised rents and homes prices so much it priced people out and then it crashed so no more jobs downtown which is killing commercial real estate and businesses etc. That’s raw capitalism.
*crony capitalism. Regulated capitalism would benefit all of us but the deck is stacked in their favor
Absolutely
If we had it in its true form without all the carve outs for big corporations we would all be better off. Capitalism is just a form of commerce, it's the bastardization of capitalism that's gotten us where we are. We should have let the banks fail in '08 and we never should have bailed out the automotive industry, or any other industry, for that matter
we would have protection rackets, bigger monopolies and more issues imo
Sound money and no central bank could help kill crony capitalism. The monopoly on creating debt notes with hardly any labor at all and then charging interest to pay it back with productive labor is pure usury. It's almost like the Fed was designed just to do this. Enrich and empower a few while making everyone else debt slaves.
Blaming capitalism the problem is like blaming the sun for your sunburn.
That’s logical.
"BUt cApItAlIsM lIfTs PeOPLe oUt oF PoVeRtY"
Some but the system is set up to keep a very large portion in the working poor space. It’s bad for capitalism to have homelessness so they write them off as drug addicts and alcoholics. But to paraphrase a homeless character from the wire - you think they sleep under a bridge sober??
It can, at least in capitalism you have the potential for upward mobility. With socialism or communism you don't have any choices, you're assigned a job and that's that
The illusion of upward mobility
There's no illusion, but you have to work for it. You can start from nothing and work your way up if you put in the effort. Nobody is stopping you from starting a business, you can start a landscaping company with a push mower. Or buy a bucket and a squeegee and start a window washing company. Everyone wants to be an influencer or a CEO but they pass up easy money because it's not glorious and they expect everything handed to them. I had my first real business at 20, what's stopping you?
Nobody is stopping you
Government, family, lack of funds, society, economy, time, genetics, etc.
Plenty of forces keeping people in line preventing them from breaking free from our invisible caste system.
Of course you can start a business, but unless you actually have the connections to get clients, it will go nowhere and all you’ll be left with is debt. You can buy the push mower but if everyone already has a landscaper then all you’ll have is $200 less than you started with.
Or you're cheaper because you don't have the overhead, so you can start with small clients until you can save up the $250 to start an LLC or S corp. I started my first business on the weekends and at night and I kept my day job until I was losing money going to my day job. I also started it with $20...
Cool. What year was that in?
Enjoy your victim mentality, it's guaranteed to keep you broke
Enjoy your high horse, it’s guaranteed to keep you a douche
The first one was around 1994, then I've started a couple others after that. It's only as hard as you make it
Oh so back when money was cheap and before the dot-com burst and the 2008 recession and COVID and the current recession?
Nice dude. Way to beat the hard times.
And that's a loser mentality, you told me ten ways it won't work but not a single one to say how it CAN work. That's why you don't own a business...
People here will pay 30$ an hour for anyone to weed eat their properties. No shortage of work if you get it a little bit together.
That's what I'm saying, all these crybabies want to find every excuse not to try. Fuck em, they can stay broke
Lol, what a dumb fucking take. It's not like the high ass taxes levied in CA has anything to do with it. Or how fucking poorly the state has been ran, get a grip dumb eff.
Ok.
Wait till they begin to reproduce. Babies born and raised right there by the highway. Just like a third-world country. Everything is going according to plan.
Oh so strange. Same happened in the capital of the universe: Austim
You think it is bad today… give it a decade for “holy shitballs” stats.
Homeless rates are about the same as ever, anybody can look it up. The only difference is during a recession homelessness tends to go down because housing is more affordable, and when the economy grows tends to be less affordable and homelessness goes up and anybody can look at the data for decades and see that.
And the band played on...
Infuriating part is we have the capacity to end homelessness but we lack the political will.
We should have quarterly metrics for increasing investments in homelessness, that’ll sure do it.
We know
I encourage “unhoused individuals” to consider relocating to a more temperate climate with a generous subsidy industry……. I tell them no snow 🥶 + free 💩!
What solution does everyone propose for this issue? I am unable to come up with one.
Thanks newsome lol
I'm in Huntington Beach currently. I don't see any homeless. well maybe one homeless guy in a van in the parking lot by Central Park.
Democrats policies are terrible. There will be more homeless Americans and many more illegal migrants entering the United States. Stay tuned. Americans know what is happening in the country.
Coincide with housing costs?
haha I'll take questions with an obvious answer for 500!
Now do home prices and availability
Where do people think homeless people come from?
the irony is...
the homeless are supposed to be insane ones?
But the housing and Rent prices here in LA are so crazy that being homeless actually makes sense.
What sorta fucked up towns have an exact headcount on their homeless population, unless they’re monitoring closely to compete for those federal bum dollars, everything’s a scam
It’s like being Democrat ran don’t have it’s benefits
Meanwhile, unemployment is only 3%. 🤔
Good thing folks are protesting a war halfway around the world. Our politicians need to know what’s important 😂
Yeah, I’d say it’s time for forced removal
To where? Another state will send them back. Throwing them in jail costs $132,000 a year per prisoner in California. That's a hell of an expensive way to house people, though it's probably an improvement over a tent and being strung out on drugs.
Californians spend a lot of tax dollars to keep people alive when they overdose. They gotta keep the voters alive and voting.
Those folks don’t vote
I'm genuinely always surprised by the amount of bullshit this sub conceives but this is such a great new batshit concoction that I had to comment.
Sorry, I had a moment of facetious weakness. I live in the northern part of the Bay Area. This type of encampment is rampant all over SF, Oakland, Vallejo, Berkeley... Like OC, not sure about San Diego, but we have a very pleasant climate that is conducive to tent cities. They have a high availability to drugs and the community helps feed the tent cities. Government has not been able to identify or at least correct the root cause. Government continues to look the other way or fund ineffective support programs. Those that aren't on the front lines or living in these areas are just happy that it isn't near where they live.
To Texas honestly, I’d bus them there
They wouldn't be allowed to shit in the street or walk around fucked up, that's for sure...
It’s a win-win-win
Agreed. Someone needs to hold them responsible for their actions
Only the best country in the world would let this many of its people become homeless.
America now has a massive population of "Working homeless"
People with full time jobs, who are still homeless.
Late stage capitalism is sooo shitty.
Why is nobody helping them?
Real talk. Why do wealthy people think it’s justified to hoard and cause these issues?
Self awareness starts at home.
As opposed to everywhere else?
Since they kicked out all of the immigrants, why not put the homeless to work instead, and give them a path to stability?
Solved it for you, Florida.
At least something had positive growth in this economy
