It is a severely strange time that we as humans are living in, and what will the earth be like in 10 years? What will the earth be like in a 100 years ?

10 years: boring dystopia or warring fascist police states

People are scared and trying not to show it. They don’t know what they do so they continue business as usual. Typical human behavior, I wouldn’t expect anything different. 

Some can look truth right in the eyes and others stick their head in the sand. 

10 years: Agriculture begins to fail in ways that panic the western powers. Result being famine and war.

100 years: Your local warlord will decide who lives and dies. The biosphere will no longer support humans and we will be heading towards extinction.

It is quite sad, because in a civilizational sense, we are living in some of the best most materially prosperous times in history, but it is coincidentally happening at the same time that all of it is dying in the background.

I’m in Victoria, Australia. In the 2000s we had the millennium drought. We were starting to wonder if it would ever really rain again. It lasted 12 years. Since then we’ve had record floods, record fires then record floods, then…. It a fucking roller coaster baby.

10 years: crazy weather everywhere; famine for billions; developed nations falling apart; migrations; amazon collapsing for everyone to see, even the deniers ;new/old viruses spreading around; AGI surpassing every living being in the planet by a long shot.

100 years: no idea.

I subscribe to the Guy McPherson school of thought. I wouldn't be surprised if there's no one left in 2124. Maybe small roving bands of scavengers. If we do make it to 2034, I think the world is going to look like the one from Robocop or Judge Dredd. Dystopian, hyper-capitalist, run down, desperate, subscription everything, draconian.

I've made up my mind a long time ago, humans are going to "let it rip" until we've squeezed the last recoverable resources of the ground. We're never giving up the drug of modern civilization until we're forced to. Not what I wanted, don't blame me. Any Resistance that tries to stop it will be crushed.

Ten years: Repeated SARS-CoV-2 infections will have severely damaged the immune systems and central nervous systems of most of the human race, which will adversely impact our collective ability to deal with every other problem.

Hundred years: I don't know. It depends on whether we can overcome the crises of the next twenty years. If we can do that, then by 2124 we should have the power to remake the solar system to our liking, at the very least. If we cannot, extinction or near-extinction is not off the table.

Once we start getting some serious crop failures, we'll see the that liberals are indeed fascists. If anyone(Iran) has real balls and actually tries to stop Israel from taking Rafah, that will cause a huge spike in gas prices worldwide. which will again lead to fascists showing their true colors. We already live in a nightmare dystopia and its gonna get worse.

This is as good as things get. Focus on your personal relationships. Spend time with the people you care about. Enjoy the little things. Take some LSD.

I think about this a lot. War was going on in Europe one hundred years ago, was that time worse to be alive? I'm female so no. But for men, maybe? It's hard to tell because I used to hear stories of people buying a bus ticket or taking a train and getting a job that day that was enough to make a living. They would get married, get a house, a car, the whole thing. That's completely insane to me.

Before the pandemic, one could argue we had it good on the basis of the availability of products but consumption is a minor part of life, in reality. Quality matters more and quality has been in decline for decades. It is not the sign of a good life to be overworked, indebted, unable to buy a house or start a family, surrounded in cheap garbage and stuck with a dying planet.

I think how bad things get to a large extent depends on what we do now, but in any case it’s going to be a very rough century.

We are living in perhaps one of the worst times in human history

I'm guessing you haven't read a lot of history.

10 years will likely be further escalation of the world political disputes currently going on with the added topics of scarcity and ownership on top of religious and cultural differences. 100 years will be the fragmented remains of the world societies trying to survive in a world we are (especially in the global north west) completely unprepared for whether this world be destroyed but human actions of war or simply the escalation of weather system change. We have lost most if not all of the skills on an individual basis required to simply survive with nature in this world eg food production, tool production and medical care. We have been corralled into a belief that you can rely on everything simply being there.. just cast your mind back to the COVID times issues of supply chains.. now reimagine that world wide for every commodity and resource.. it won’t be a case of waiting and rationing it will be hoarding by people of what there is (all-a the rich currently with money and power) and the vast majority of people simply not having what they need of the short term stock pile of what we have created and none of the skills needed to provide for themselves.

I don’t think so for the human species right now. YOU and I and everyone we know are at the peak and/or just past the peak of humans and world as we know it. It’s not great, but think of the last 10,000 generations of humans before you.

We live in a time where information is instant and the world can talk to each other instantly. We can now see EVERYTHING in real time. And we all know it’s going down FAST.

The world is dying. You can do what ever you need or want to do but in the end, you’ll die just like every other generation. Our species fucked up our home before you were born but that’s not your fault. You and everyone else has a choice of what to do next.

Most, if not all will live day to day, with no thoughts of the future till it hits them in the face. All humans will consume till we can’t and turn in to animals when it becomes rare.

I’m upset with the timeline I see ahead but would not be able to see it without the technology and information we have today.

I really do no think that we live in the worst times in a sense that it was never really bad before. I, for one, would not like to face the Black Death. And wars are more the standard than the exception to human history. But I agree that, what we suffer from, is seeing the good times after the 1950s and the former privileges fading.

In 10 years my kids will be in college, if they choose to go. 100… my little family will be gone. I honestly hope my kids decide to not have kids of their own. I’m so stressed and guilt ridden thinking about what my kids’ lives will be like. I don’t want them to go through this pain as well.

My parents got upset when I asked them to stop saying stuff like “when you get married and have kids” because wtf is that. I feel like I was raised to go to college, get married, have kids, and that’s the path I took because it was instilled in me. I’m glad to see that a lot of people in my generation didn’t just go down the expected path, and that those who did are teaching our kids they can’t do what they feel like, not what antiquated societal norms dictate.

I think what you might mean to say is "I might personally have to deal with some tough times ahead for the first time in my life and I've led an extremely privileged existence so I'm not sure how to handle it".

First off this isn't the worst time in history. Maybe the worst outlook for the future, but present day is definitely not the worst time in history.

Secondly I always see the exact same thing over and over again. "The world is going to hell but I still have to go to work?" Well yeah, everyone still needs to live. Should we all just lay down and die because the future is grim?

I think the way you can get a near instantaneous report of bad news around the world is what leads to this assumption. Yes things are bad, but we have come through several eras of slavery, genocide, poverty, etc. Covid for instance- yes the global response lagged and millions died. But in the past, pandemics have wiped out a third of the world’s population. Nations, regions, populations etc have all collapsed before in history. Now we just have more detailed records of it

We need more stories about what the world might be like in 100 years time. The future doesn't stop in 2100.

Historically speaking, wars, political corruption, and famine are not strange times. Nor is income inequality or inequality in general.

Climate change, technology, and the social, financial, and geopolitical implications of it are— combined with political divisiveness might be.

The extremism also adds to it.

My growing concern is not that it will be “all over” in ten years but that we will have normalized and undergone a ‘deadcat bounce’ where improvement over this nadir makes things seem good or acceptable.

• Biden will defeat the worst (ex) president in living history. Or he won’t, but most of us will survive Trump’s dismantling of American civilization (its institutions, like separation of powers). Either way, the idiots who come after 2028 will be pandering cowards who either lie about climate change or downplay it.

• the horror story of current adolescent education will produce a generation of helpless adult infants, who cannot manage emotions (‘Social-Emotional Learning bad!’), cannot properly use technology except for their smartphone addiction, cannot read or write, and cannot think critically, and have no deep intellectual interests independent of AI crutches

• a massive underclass of unemployed peons masked by the convenience of falling or already fallen prices (no replacement cohort for the Boomers’ dysburbias)

• people will live in the world of enchantment, with the loss of common affinity and friendship and romance and marital stability being cloaked by AI amusement and games and robotic companions and even conjugal partners.

• eroding infrastructure that is already more expensive now becoming triage costly then, governed almost entirely in maintenance-defense mode (a slow war of attrition).

By the time the shit hits the fan around 2050 (not due to statistical averages but just because these are twenty year-out problems, we will have lost any sense of a cohesive society. Famine or water wars would cause mass brutality on a scale most of us cannot intuitively comprehend.

People will be left to plunder and destroy but unable to create and provide. A dreary existence.

The alternative is that the Musk technotopia exists in theory but not in depth. We eat crappy food provided artificially by machines and live in grim dorms sheltered from the unstable climate outside, but our lives are those of astronauts, and we have slaughtered all the other natural world’s creatures. Distracted dumb and selfish, few weep or mourn as all creation is wiped out crudely with a rubber eraser.

I mean climate wise it’s pretty clear… the Amazon is gonna dry out within 10 years and create millions of climate refugees just that alone. Then there’s gonna be multiple other climate catastrophe’s other places on top of that. I think maybe some wealthy countries in the most stable climatic areas will become total regimes refusing to help all these refugees and it’ll likely create wars with the remaining states or whatever’s left of poorer countries societies.

I had this conversation with a friend yesterday. Many say we were born too late to explore the new frontier and born too early to explore space. I think we're living in the most pivotal time period of human history, so far at least.

The Alberta Tar Sands are not easy to extract, it requires significant energy and effort to make them usable. Easy to extract in my mind means you have roughly the same mostly human powered technology to extract, convert and use the oil or coal from the ground with minimal extra effort that existed at the dawn of the oil age.

If we suffer a full societal collaspe, including but not limited to small or large scale civil wars in 1st world nations. Deployment of biological, chemical and possibly nukes as emps. Most likely hardcore zealots then assume control and they shoot the scientists, teachers and technical class first. This results in massive knowledge loss, and trust me running a light water reactor is a complex endevour. You have to balance it just right in both coolant chemistry and power output, or bad uncontrollable things happen.

One last factor today is a majority of society does not have the basic knowledge base to rebuild our complex technology from scratch. A large amount of what gets created today requires massive teams of people doing the research and design to create and build out. Our modern world is incredibly complex and interconnect, our food travels extremely long distances. Knock those basic legs out and maybe, and it is a hard 6 roll, maybe our descendants can rebuild. The rebuilding will occur in a rapidly warming world, were the climate is shifting, resources are scarce, and basic knowledge is gone and has to be relearned balancing on a razors edge.

2124: Ice age termination event is accelerating at an alarming pace. Widespread desertification as the tropics are pushed well into the mid latitudes. The decaying remains of the last glaciers are on their last legs in central Greenland and the South Pole. The northern hemisphere is particularly badly affected, as it turns out that the AMOC was preventing runaway warming by circulating heat from the atmosphere. Look at the results of ice core studies. The earth used to be much warmer. It steadily went down over the past 10k years and when we officially started measuring weather around 1874, that just happened to be the coldest year ever of the last 10k years. Makes sense it only went up from there. We have plenty of room to even reach the normal average temp of earth. We are still in a cold period.

Predicting the future is always very difficult. And the thing about collapse is that it is... chaotic, complex. Non-linear.

So it's difficult to predict specifics.

In 10 years things will be worse. We'll probably see or have seen a couple of major wars. How major depends. We'll probably see many resource wars in the developing world. In the rich world we'll see a war for what the world order is going to be like going forward I think. Hopefully not an all out nuclear war. Parties will be the EU, US, Japan, SK and others vs China, Russia, probably Iran and others. India and Pakistan are a bit of a wild card.

We'll see massive refugee streams. What effects that will have depends on how the developed nations react. Will tighter border controls be able to stop such massive flows? Probably not.

Lots of other stuff you could say, not much of it positive. Technology is a wild card. We may hope for a miracle of some sort that alleviates some of our problems. But we can't expect it.

Mass starvation is likely to begin setting in. Rising prices world wide will lead to great inflation that will not spare ordinary people in the developed world.

Worst case, most developed nation states will collapse already around this time as a result of refugee streams, starvation, economic collapse, populism, etc.

Most likely most nation states will manage to survive with the threat of invasion and war being the factor that makes people want to preserve them at all cost.

In 100 years large parts of the earth will be uninhabitable for humans. Most animal species will have died out due to not being able to adapt fast enough to the changing climate. My bet is that humans will still cling on in areas around the poles or underground. Maybe in some highlands/mountains. Food will be a problem, but we can eat almost anything. We'll not quite be in the stone age. Some technology and scientific knowledge will survive, for a time at least. Population will be in the millions. Hundreds of millions if we're lucky.

We are going to see dramatic changes in the way society is organized with a seesawing motion over the next few generations. Class conflict is only going to increase and the solutions for organizing society will be diverse. Almost none will work but we would’ve at least tried many before landing on the next compromise. The climate crisis and AI are only going to exacerbate class conflict and increase the pace of change. Nuclear war could happen again but is somewhat unlikely since everyone knows there will only be destruction if we take that route. At the end of the day, people want to preserve themselves and their progeny.
