How Do You Get These Off?

Got this claw type stove which attaches to a canister, can't seem to figure out how to get it off. It's been on there since the last time it was used 2 years ago but doesn't seem rusty or stuck, I just can't figure out how to get it off and don't want to pull too hard and it blow up in my hand...

Any tips?

Vintage! Sitting down, hold the can between your thighs so you can use both hands, one on the blue ring, one on the burner base. Holding the can and the burner steady, twist the blue ring in the off direction.

Then throw them both in the trash and buy something for $10 with a modern standard fitting.

The entire line was discontinued over a decade ago in the US. Canisters are expensive and not readily available. Even when available in other countries, my understanding is that they are expensive and less available than other formats.

They can be filled back up.

I have a few of these cans with the burner. Not worth replacing when you can fill the cans for like $0.50 a piece.

You can buy the fittings to fill them from a 5 gallon tank.

This, but I still recommend getting a new canister to know you’re using a good, undamaged can. All it takes is a broken canister or OPD valve to have a rather dangerous situation on your hands

Nothing would at that point. Or why you buy 3 cans and just keep each filled.

But one could replace a normal Lindal valve canister in the closest trail town. Notsomuch with that other contraption

The whole point is there is no need to replace them. Carry the fill valve with you then, so you can fill it at your stops. simple

Easier to buy new one. Your solution requires one to ship a source and valve ahead after knowing where you’d run out, and then being able to get there and hope the fuel was there and not confiscated by postal authorities, etc c.

Sounds like a nightmare but you do you.

Then there is the whole “untrained people doing gas transfers in the field” issue.

what? you carry the nozzle with you, it's a really small piece that screws onto the top, and connects to your basic propane tank connection. You carry it, and can fill your cans anywhere you go that has propane.

Untrained? what do you need training for? watch a 2 minute youtube video and you know what you're doing. simple

I carried my nozzle with me on my AT hike, and would fill my 2 tanks everytime I made it to town. Much cheaper than shipping them, and faster as you can always fill up without planning it.

There are retrofit parts for them to work with modern stuff, but the last time this came up I'm like 90% sure it was a lot cheaper to just buy new.

Based on the direction the ON and OFF arrows are pointing, it looks like it is left handed threads. Try turning it the "wrong" direction.

You gotta stroke it, gently, and go slow at first, then pick up the rhythm a bit.

Update: thanks for all the funny comments :D unfortunately none of the sensible suggestions worked. I tried twisting clockwise, anticlockwise, pushing it down and then twisting did nothing (as in, there is no "down" to push), tried pulling it hard.

It's a non-threaded canister so I don't know if twisting is doing anything.

It's so weird. There's nothing damaged about it, I'm convinced I'm doing something wrong I just can't figure it out.

Not all - if I remember correctly the green 1lb propane canisters and the jetboil style hiking canisters are a conventional roght hand thread

Use a jack hammer, and a chisel. If you jump up and down on it, that'll help kill the "cheap-ah-bih" inside you
