Got recommended this tent, is it good?
Gear QuestionYep, good for what it is. Weekend trips, a couple days at a time, and no sustained downpours. I used a Coleman for family camping and got more than ten years out of it. $13 dollars a year (+-) to own a tent is reasonable.
No, I think this version is a worse version of the Sundome, to me at least it looks like the fly and mesh are a little smaller than the older version, but maybe that's just this photo or something. This is the version I used to have: https://www.amazon.com/Coleman-2-Person-Sundome-Tent-Green/dp/B004J2KDH0/
It's fine for a beginner budget tent.
Second the Sundome. Coleman makes quality products. I use the 3 person Sundome for car camping. $90 on Amazon. I wouldn’t hike with it. Well worth the price point. And I would think the Sundome would have much better rain cover.
Best I can say for those tier tents. They will work for light very occasional use, but will wear out and fail with heavier use.
If you're going to use it 10 times a year. It's fine.
If you're going to use it 10 times a month. It'll come apart at the seams.
I have it. It's fine for regular camping. It's a good budget option. You could even go to Walmart and get their ozark same style tent for half the price and similar quality. Keep in mind any two man tent is gonna pretty small. Two people and gear and you'll be pretty cramped.
Only problem with Ozark trail tents IMO is they use those stupid bent tent pole connectors that bend and snap easily, and you can't repair them like you can with a straight pole or get a quick replacement. I still have a tent with a broken pole and no idea how to fix or replace the pole.
If it rains, I prefer the rain fly to cover at least two sides all the way to the ground. If you rub up against the side of the tent while you are sleeping, and the side of the tent is wet, the moisture will wick through.
Adding to this that dewy mornings may also have issues with water getting through! Which (depending on your location) is usually way more common than actual rain. I personally don’t do tents anymore without the full length rain fly
I have this tent. It fits 2 people fairly comfortably, but it's probably best to use for 1 person so that you have extra room for gear. It's a great budget tent for car camping and I do recommend it.
Is it good? Nope, not even a little bit
“Good” is real subjective. I’d say no, but I say that about anything sold at Walmart. They only sell trash. For a cheap tent, I stick with Alps Mountaineering.
I asked for tents on the cheaper side, but this seems like too good to be true.
Edit(since I can’t edit the post): am planning on going with another person (two in total but will probably use it for myself otherwise. Is a 2 person tent enough?
Imo a 4 person tent can be found for not much more but will give you a lot more comfort
On the Coleman website, their 4 person sundome is $100, but give you a $30 dollar discount so it’s only 7 dollars more expensive than the 2 person. Yippee
a 2 person tent is for 1 person. A 4 person tent is for 2 people. Silly? Perhaps. I would only share a 2 person tent with someone I really like. There won't be much spare room for gear.
She’s my sister, so not much more people I’m as close to.
If you look at the diagrams for how two people are to fit into the tent, you may find that you are NOT two person tent close to anyone! The pictures show two people in mummy bags, lying opposite to each other, so your feet are in the other person's face (and vice versa), and your backpack is your pillow and is the only gear in the tent. A three or four man is far more comfortable.
I find that rainfly style is useless if it actually rains. A drizzle is doable, but it is nearly impossible to stay dry in a downpour. The overhang doesn't fully block the door, and rain bouncing off the ground or being driven by the wind will soak the tent.
Ok yeah I see it now lmao
You shouldn’t be “2-person-tent-close” with your sister. Get the 4 person Sundome. It’ll last for years and it’s perfect for 1-2 people.
Yep i saw the way people sleep in them. I heard people say it’d be stuffy with gear, but that seems a bit smaller than advertised. I’ll definitely be getting a larger size.
Yea man, types of camping can be pretty diverse. It may help to display what your intentions are.
Sorry, I forgot to mention it. I’ll add it to the post. Planning on camping on flat prairie land near Winnipeg, Manitoba in mid July. (Similar to Southwest Ontario) Highs are 27°C (80°F) and lows are 16°C (61°F). Wind speed is usually not strong from my memories but I’m not sure. I will be using it for just myself afterwards which makes me a little more hesitant about getting a 3 person tent (cost and weight mostly). Any more information needed? Please let me know!
Edit: forgot I can’t add it to the post 😭
Nah that should do it. But yea i usually do 3 day back country stents and weight is always my #1 concern and yea this one seems pretty heavy just in general. But other than that, it looks good to me. You just need to have a decent sleeping bag for night temps.
Not the greatest! Coleman has much better and still for a decent price.
This IS a Coleman lol
Yes. I just said they have better
Fair enough
That tent is small. 4 person tents can be had for less. Ive had good luck with an ozark trail $35 tents or pay a little more for something like kelty or marmot on sale. If you expect any sort of inclement weather i would look for a rainfly with more coverage.
For 1 or max. 2 (not too tall) person it is an ideal tent.
Its good for an extremely cheap tent, but its not "good".
For what tackling Mount Everest- no its shit. For car camping in a park in nice weather on occasion- sure.
I'd never buy a tent without a full fly.
Get the bigger one
Coleman as a brand has always been solidly middle of the road in my experience, and reliability is a good thing! That said... whether or not it's a good tent for you entirely depends on who you are and what you're doing.
For what? Camping in the back yard with your kids? Absolutely. Camping in the Arctic while living a semi nomadic lifestyle? No chance

Fine for that trip. Bit much, like you said, for solo though
Sorry to bother but do you mean the 3 person tent is a bit much for solo? I’m reading this half asleep and can’t really tell 🙇
The 3 person tent is a bit much for going solo, yes. Just compare the weight to a single person tent and consider if it's worth it to carry that extra weight. Maybe it's fine for you.
For a first tent it’s more than fine. Still have mine from when I was a kid. My kids used it in the back yard growing up. I got it for my 12th birthday and I’m 50 now. It’ll do just fine.
They dont make em like they used to

No, not likely for $62, sorry.
I use a Coleman 2 person. I'm 6 feet and have to sleep diagonally, and it's about hip height. I was able to keep my shoes and a backpack with me comfortably. It kept me nice and dry on a rainy night. I prefer my hammock, but this is definitely a wonderful dispersed camping tent or an emergency shelter for 1 adult. You might be able to stuff 2 kids in there by themselves, so if you and your s/o wanna share the tent, it won't happen unless you're both the size of children. The tents light and can be strapped to the side of a 32L. I'd recommend it for backcountry excursions, especially if you're just trying to get out of the elements and set up is a breeze less than a minute
Edit: Ozark trail 2 person ( my bad I confuse them alot ) regardless to the same effect I bought 4 of them for 25$ a piece and all of them have been used and kept everyone dry. They come in handy for spur of the moment times when you kidnap your friends and tell them you're going "camping" and you find yourself on a 4 day hike lol
I wouldn't trust that rainfly. I wouldnt trust any rainfly that doesnt provide complete coverage. If you get that tent I'd also get a tarp to cover the entire tent in case of rain.
No. The rain fly is a doily and doesn't cover the tent well at all.
Yes that's a great beginner tent. I used an older version of that for 3 years.
Fine for a weekender in more or less good/ideal weather and if you don't camp that often. Even though I'm in a very dry climate, we get pretty regular storms in the mountains during the summer months...they can be mild and pass quickly, or insane with wind and rain coming in sideways. If you're going to run into weather, you'd want a full size rain fly and vestibule.
I had that tent. It leaked every time it rained, which is every time I camp, in all seriousness.
I love my Coleman tents for car camping. I thi the 6 person is the right size if that's what you are doing
Not a good product for heavy rains . Bring extra tarp to cover it JIC. Coleman is going the way of LLBean. Poor quality
Why not just get a good expensive one, use it and return it back, cost you nothing.
Depends on what kind of camping you're doing and how long....once in a blue moon for 2 days....probably be ok
