Hi reddit community!
I'm looking for a bit of advice. I'm planning a solo backpacking holiday for next year and I'm debating whether to go to Vietnam or the Philippines. I love hiking, exploring mountains and volcanoes, experiencing local culture, adventure activities, learning about history, beaches (although not too much- don't want an exclusively beach - orientated holiday). I love going off the beaten path. Does anyone have any opinions on the two? Or any other countries they would think would be more suitable? I'm open to any suggestions! I'll likely be going for 3 weeks/ 1 month, travelling from the UK. I have a driving licence, but not sure how id fare driving in chaotic traffic.
Let me know please!
In my opinion the unique selling point of the Philippines is the beach, water and tropical island vibes. To me it sounds you are looking for other things, which I think Vietnam can offer (between those 2 mentioned).
The country has been hosting backpackers for decades, so the (tourist) infrastructure is there to support it; busses, trains and planes between cities, or get your own scooter/motorcycle and go from north to south (or vice versa). The north has its hiking hot spots (Sa Pa, Ninh Binh, ..) . The Ha Giang loop up north has great opportunities to see day to day life, and witness some local cultural events. And for history; 50 years of war and independce battles has left its mark on the country, just to name 1 aspect in recent history. The war remnants museum in HCMC still has me in awe, even 2 years later.
The country and its people really want to develop. Kids approaching you on the street to speak some English is a great example of that.
