I currently have a music coach who I feel like is telling me some things that I feel like wouldn’t work on an autistic person. I don’t see any point in telling him I have autism because he told me that he doesn’t have any experience teaching autistic people. Some of the things he’s told me that I think wouldn’t work on an autistic person are
you’re not a kid anymore. The world isn’t gonna coddle you
you need thick skin
you see this as black and white with no awareness of the gray area
“Don’t be weird.”
I think a lot of things people often say along these lines — instructing others how to behave or how they should feel — are pointless no matter who they’re aimed at. Some may poke at our specific challenges in some way. But this one seems, to me, particularly pointed and painful because it feels like a criticism of our fundamental selves no matter how we’re behaving.
