The one country you dream of going to.
Besides the one you were born in, what's your dream country to move to?
New Zealand
(You should have asked where we're moving from)
Am European, moved to NZ in 2005 - can confirm, it’s dope.
Especially the South!
Why?
Fyi I am a New Zealander.
EDIT: Oh, you meant why NZ?
I'm from Australia. It seems like a nicer version of Australia, which I'm used to, but which is going downhill if you ask me. And everyone I've met from NZ I've got along with really well. I like the culture.
What's your dream country to move to, by the way?
I am moving to Australia (Hobart) for year in March haha, it's a great place with heaps going for it but not my dream country, have lived there off and on for work.
Probably Scotland, something about it was special, and I have lots of relatives there.
NZ is def poorer than Australia, salaries are shit in comparison, affordable housing is worse if you can believe it. But the culture is def more chill, can see a mark difference working with NZ customers and AU.
affordable housing is worse
Say it isn't so!!
NZ is going downhill more rapidly than Oz. And we have a worse housing crisis. Not the guy you replied to but my dream country is Switzerland - good money, easy transport connections across Europe (in NZ there are literally no intercity rail connections that aren't tourist sightseeing trains, public transport is generally shit especially if you are outside of akl/wlg, and any flight leaving the country to somewhere other than the islands or Oz is 10+ hours), good universities and excellent Healthcare
Kind of off topic but I find it curious that New Zealand is having a housing crisis. Funny how so many countries around the world started allowing foreign ownership of residential properties resulting in people not being able to afford living in their own country.
This is happening in Cape Town. Foreigners are buying up properties making it unaffordable for locals.
I live in the States, about 20 minutes from a National Park and about an hour from Canada. We used to be such a nice little affordable town even with the big ski mountain resort we live by. In the past 4ish years, especially after the pandemic, we have seen a huge influx of out of staters buying tons of properties as second, third, fourth homes that are basically unoccupied for the majority of the year and land developers came in and swooped up large tracts of beautiful fields. Our home, which we bought in 2020 for $149,000 is now worth 490. That sounds great but the taxes that go along with that are ridiculous and it's difficult not to be frustrated!
The world’s 0.01% is getting MORE and MORE,, and their best achievement is being invisible: just a “ housing crisis” — from nowhere. Nothing in here but us chickens
Houses in Switzerland are a lot more expensive than here in NZ
Everything in is alot more expensive
Kiwi here.... why tho?
new zealander here. moved here when I was a featus. Can confirm, best choice my parents ever made, the landing was a bit of a blur but the living has been great
Apart from the wonderful weather and scenery and food, people are super nice in NZ!
I'd also say Middle Earth.
Moved from the US to NZ south island. Best decision of my life.
Have lived in NZ all my life, came here expecting to see NZ as the top comment, was not disappointed
I think Switzerland is absolutely beautiful with some of the nicest scenery I’ve seen (online because I’ve never been). It would be cool to live there and have that in my “backyard.”
Admittedly don’t really know much about the day to day life there though.
I moved to Switzerland several years ago and really enjoy it. Advantages: public transport is amazing, scenery is unreal, thousands of km of hiking trails, pay is good, exchange rate is good when going abroad, healthy lifestyle, safe, orderly, chill. Disadvantages: hella expensive, big language barrier, strict rule-following culture, sexism, difficult to break into social circles, not exactly “happening” in the night-life area (20-somethings say it’s boring), can’t buy a house unless you’re REALLY rich (not just a mere millionaire), expensive healthcare, … like everywhere there are advantages and disadvantages but it suits me well enough.
Only thing I disagree with is the healthcare being expensive, but that is coming from a us citizen. I realize it’s high by EU standards but it’s higher quality than most other countries.
Insurance is expensive but it covers what it’s supposed to, and because costs are regulated you aren’t screwed by corporate healthcare shortcuts.
It is beautiful. I live in the boring ass Netherlands and drove there in 2022. Interlaken and Lauterbrunnen were amazing. The air you breathe in Lauterbrunnen just feels so clean and fresh.
The way you guys have been dealing with ocean waters and coastlines for the past 1,000 years is nothing short of astonishing.
True, but is that really a reason this would be a dream country. It's not like you notice it in day to day life. For example, my dream country would have better weather, less taxes, beautiful nature, amazing food etc. Dutch food is awful garbage.
So is it Gruyère which is gushing out of your anus then?
I live in switzerland and I love this country so much I feel so safe and protected here
I have a friend who lives there with his wife. Like 30 something. Both are both very successful and they won't ever own a house. A big Mac combo in zurich cost me 18 euro. Super nice and super expensive. But they're rental is gorgeous, has a bunker, and looks over the alps so it's not all bad!
Shits so expensive over there
I could see myself living in a small town in southern France.
I did live there for many years and spent 18 months in southern France... absolute paradise if you speak French and enjoy the Mediterranean culture.
Ireland, I'm Brazilian
Somewhere Mediterranean. Finland is a nice country, but I am fed up with the winters. Right now the weather is +1 celcius, wet and windy, and all pavements are slippery because they are covered with wet ice.
Funny - as a German I'd love to be able to move to Finland and master the language.
Careful what you wish for. Turkey is also mediterranean
"I hate turkeys. If you stand in the meat section at the grocery store long enough, you start to get mad at turkeys. There's turkey ham, turkey bologna, turkey pastrami. Some one needs to tell the turkey, 'man, just be yourself.'"
-Mitch Hedberg
RIP Mitch.
Canada, but it seems too expensive now :(
It is a beautiful country but I am from Canada and we're looking to leave too expensive and everything is kind of fucked up these days.
Isn't it just as expensive as the states tho?
I guess it's expensive everywhere these days.
House prices in Canada and New Zealand rose the most of anywhere in the world since 2010. Will look for the source on this.
Food clothes and electronics are about 30% more expensive in Canada from what dual citizens say on Reddit
It's even worse than the states. We are all getting so screwed.
A record million new immigrants to Canada in the last year is driving up prices. Most immigrants come with a lot of money.
You can’t buy a house for under $1 million in Vancouver anymore because all of the rich Asians have driven the prices up over the last 20 years.
Don't blame the people that take advantage of a policy. Blame the people that implement said policy.
Facts. Finally someone that doesn’t beat around the bush
It’s Indian fraud and rich Asians here in Toronto
I live in canada and trust me there’s better places. I can’t wait to move out, maybe it’s just my province tho so try others lol
Yeah, I was thinking of a small city. Haven't thought much about it tho
Toronto here, this place is a sh*thole now. I used to love it, though.
Thanks, I always make that mistake
I moved to Canada a few years ago. I don’t think I’d be able to afford if I moved here today.
It's getting worse. The liberal government keeps trying to force change through carbon tax etc without offering alternatives or solutions. The conservative government in Ontario is trying to privatize health care. I hear good things about the maritime provinces...
Yup just bought 12 acres of unserviced land out east for under 20K after closing . Going to live off grid
12 acres for 20k holy shit nice
Dreamt of USA since forever. If not for horror stories about your healthcare I would not hesitate.
If you can get any type of government job you should be fine as related to healthcare
If you can get good Healthcare you are fine, provided you live in a decent area.
Disagree. If you have good healthcare AND never get cancer or a chronic illness you are fine. I had good healthcare with a chronic illness for years and I spent literally tens of thousands of dollars on medical bills out of pocket. Emptied my 401k. It is not safe to get sick in this country, period.
There was a recent article that noted that the majority of medical bankruptcies, are now from middle class Americans who HAVE GOOD INSURANCE.
So more people WITH insurance, are filing for bankruptcy than those without insurance.
So to your point, simply having “good insurance” means absolutely nothing these days.
I've heard from most people that if the USA had solid Healthcare and public transportation everyone would be trying to move here
And fair salaries and lower inflation.
With good public transportation and universal healthcare most people in the US wouldn't be nearly as fucked by stagnant wages.
Plus robust public transit and infrastructure that emphasizes walkability would reduce the need for cars and less people would have them so there would be less people with car payments, car insurance, routine maintenance, and fuel costs dragging them down
If you’re capable of legally immigrating to the United States, you’ll almost definitely have a job that gives you good health insurance.
If you have good health insurance the US has the best health care on the planet. The horror stories are from those with bad or no health insurance.
“Best health care in the planet” is simple delusion.
17th is the highest ranking I can find. It is the most expensive, though.
I’m an American, but don’t let the health care issue stop you if you are able to earn an average good living. And if you’re broke, there are some good hospitals that care about you anyway! That is only one of the great things about America.
Hi, do you mind expanding on this a little?
My company operates in the U.S and I can transfer & live there for a 1-2 years and transfer back. If they had a solid Medical plan, it would suffice in the U.S to get treatment without paying insane prices?
You would still have to pay “co-pays” and premiums. My husband and I pay $600 a month for our health insurance through his employer and because we have a high deductible they will only pay for things after a certain point. So we sometimes spend $10,000+ in a year on healthcare (including prescriptions, etc.). Some companies have better insurance options, some worse. It entirely depends on your employer.
The average premium is something like $5K/year. Then you may have relatively affordable healthcare with co-pays anywhere between $20 and $100. It’s a very complicated system and, no matter how you fit into it, very expensive.
Yes. Many US companies have good healthcare plans, the scandal to people from other countries is that our healthcare is tied to employment vs being universal. If your company offers it, you can look into the network and coverage before enrolling (usually there are 3-4 options per employer depending on the size of the company) and that allows you to understand how your health plan works.
Normally you'll get fairly decent coverage and pay a couple of hundred dollars a month for just yourself, with dependents it's more.
I sure hope that all the wild stories on the Internet are rare examples or fakes. My health prone to failing.
Would a ‘I went to a hospital and only had to pay a hundred bucks’ story gain any traction on the internet?
I'm from the UK. Canada. Specifically the Nova Scotia area. Breathtaking.
Norway.
I moved there from Germany in 2017. I love the weather, the nature, people, langugage. The only drawback is loneliness
My ancestors are from here and it has always been my dream to visit/live here.
South Island of New Zealand. I live on the North Island 😁
Scotland. Just next door so it isn’t a pipe dream, but it would be nice to live there for a bit.
Also New Zealand.
Why New Zealand?
The nature alone is incredible. Peaceful, quiet, similar culture to my home country.
Scotland…I was there a few years ago and I loved it!
Chile
I always have the fantasy of moving to southern Chile and living in a forest with all that pristine and virgin nature
U need to compromise hearing that accent tho
lol, very hard to understand.
my dad is Ecuadorian and I can't stand his accent or anyone on his side of the family's accent
Chile? Who's gonna tell him...
Australia 🦘
Any Scandinavian country
Norway for me specifically
Idk if I'd wanna move there, but I do wanna visit Finland at some point. I really hope I get the chance to some day.
I love Finland, it’s my second favorite of the Nordics
Obligatory reminder: Finland is not Scandinavian. It is Nordic, though.
Scandinavia: Sweden, Norway, Denmark
Nordic countries: Scandinavian countries, Finland, Iceland
I knew that, but things don't stay in my brain well, thanks.
Same here! Have friends in CPH but don’t mind Gothenburg too. Maybe Oslo. So first, second and third.
Japan 🇯🇵
Yes, Japan would be lovely to see. My father loved it, he was stationed there after wwii.
I plan to move back there one day.
Me too. I wish they were more open to immigrants
You don’t want to work there though, trust me. It’s amazing to visit as a tourist but the work culture is some of the worst in the world. My ex would leave at 6am and return home about 10-11pm, every day pretty much.
In general it can be shit, but if you are at least bilingual and have a niche skill it can be great. I work about 2-4 hrs a day from home or wherever I want making more than enough to live happily.
sounds like a pretty good deal, what do you do for work?
My ex was bilingual but she was working in the typical Japanese corporate culture type company.
For the toy company I do licensing, PR, and deal with collaborators and all that mainly, but we make comics\manga too so hoping to put my scenario writing experience to work before long. The bulk of my work is still in game localization and publishing support, but long-term, I'm hoping to make the toy\comic stuff into my main job.
I’m with you there, even when you acknowledge its downfalls Japan just seems like a nicer place to be.
I have lived in America and Japan and Japan’s respect, trust and safeness will never be understated.
*overstated
I always wanted to live there. The bad part of living in Japan is that I have to worry about the natural disasters there.
Then move to the Ukraine; you'll love it there because you'll be staying awake worrying ALL the time.
I watched a TikTok about a restaurant/inn in rural Japan the other day and was so moved by it I discussed a trip there with my wife today
Australia.
And like heaps of other people in Australia, I was born in NZ and immigrated here!
Livin' the dream, I miss NZ for my family a lot but I really wouldn't want to live there again. Australia's got loads more opportunity and higher standard of living for the average joe like me. But overall in terms of people and culture (BUT NOT OUR ACCENT) Aus/NZ are very similar so it's not a big change.
If I had a dream country that'd be an greater change I'd look at a Scandinavian country, or Scotland. Just not the USA, most of us down under who've been there rank US as one of the best holiday destinations, and one of our very last living destinations. Social media influencers won't agree with that but their opinion is invalid.
Spain
I love Spain, it’s beautiful and the people are wonderful.
Ireland or any of the Scandinavian countries
Mexico because I'm ashamed to say I've never visited my parent's home country yet
-Billy Gnosis
Australia.
I did move there for a year and almost stayed but ended up settling in Japan.
I lived in OZ for 2 years - it's heaven on earth. I still miss it.
Scotland. Beautiful place. Lovely people ❤️
England or Italy
One is not like the other
Australia, I want to wander the Outback. With the proper supplies of course.
Australia is awesome, but the outback is very long stretches of red nothingness.
But if that sounds up your alley by all means! Take lots of water with you.
Somewhere in New England. North East, USA. Although, I think that I may have been sold an idealised version by Murder She Wrote
New England is beautiful, I grew up there. Coastal Maine and Cape Cod are amazing. The white mountains in New Hampshirite and the green mountains in Vermont are beautiful and cozy. It is very expensive though.
Spain
Born in Scotland
Nothing comes close
The neighbours are annoying
I live in Portugal as it was one of my dream homes.
Why? Only if you are rich and because of the nice weather and food. The country is poor and nothing works
Finland unless the Russians invade, in which case Norway
Australia, and I moved to it . Almost 10 years here, raising my family and leaving in my dream home. My dream came true and didn't disappoint me
Australia and I’m in the process now of getting a worker visa.
Italy or Spain (Barcelona)
Italy or Greece. I’m a sucker for art and the history behind it all.
Scotland.
I would love to move to Austria
Me, too, so beautiful and Vienna!💖
Ireland. It's a Quiet Man movie thing.
Scotland. Visited last year and fell in love.
Scotland. It’s the opposite side of the world for me in Australia but I went there for the first time in January and loved it. I might find it a bit rainy in the winter but I dream of a place where I don’t constantly have to worry about getting sunburned and there are no snakes
I studied abroad in London in 2009 and it remains one of the best chapters of my life. I don’t know how much it’s changed since then but I’ve always wanted to move back. Husband of 10 years (who is much older than I) has always said no.
Scotland
Italy or Ghana if I'm wealthy in this scenario. For both: love the food, the sights, the sound of the language, the cultural offerings (wish Ghana wasn't so damn homophobic or sexist though). There are a few small villages in Ghana and a few little places in Tuscany I truly fell in love with during my travels and could see myself having a wonderful life in.
Switzerland
Merica
Norway.
Great Britain - as an American I love delving into British history and I think it would be endlessly fascinating to live in the seat of all that history.
I’m Scottish and I already moved to Japan, but honestly I really love America and I wanted to live there for a long time. If they changed some policies I would be there in a heartbeat. Beautiful country, nice people, good food (for the most part).
Norway or Iceland.
Switzerland, Norway or Italy
If I had to leave the US I’d move to Australia. Or maybe Canada. I’m really used to American life and those are as close as you get.
Australia. Developed world standard of living, but a more relaxed attitude than say the US or Canada.
Usa
USA probably
i would move to usa just to try in-n-out
Norway, would love to go there yesterday.
USA
USA - NYC to be more precise
After living in a few different countries I realised that everywhere has its pros and cons. Where I'm living right now is pretty good but it also has a bunch of things I can't stand (Switzerland). I would probably want to move somewhere with an easier language, where the nature is still pretty, it's safe, the wages are good and the people are a bit more social (so basically a nonexistent place).
If I would be willing to sacrifice the social aspect then I would probably choose Scandinavia. I already lived in Sweden and it was fine, other than a lot of people being xenophobic, unfriendly and cold. And the healthcare there sucks.
If I had the money Finland or Norway
Wales is also very nice
Finland
Obviosly Japan. Went on vacation last year and the culture there is like no other. Expensive yes, but a girl can dream right 💖?
I have never traveled, but I want to visit Switzerland because of its picturesque scenery and beautiful countryside, London because it is London 🤣 Saudi Arabia because it is a Muslim country and provides a good life despite the heat, Turkey because it combines Islamic and modern civilization despite their current economy.
Ask me ten years ago and I probably would've had a clear answer. Though now that I've been to 45 countries, Impossible to say...
Love Thailand, Brazil and Indonesia most of all. But even then I wouldn't know which one of those to pick. Each have pros and cons.
Quite like the US, but the grid system in cities is kinda depressing
I guess anywhere but the UK! But even then, I do occasionally get homesick...
Japan
Only fun to visit but not to work and live. It’s quite stressful there coming from an Asian
Brasil
As an American, not really a dream but a contingency: Monaco.
Portugal
Belize
English speaking, universal healthcare, LCOL, Carribean Sea, what's not to like?
Africa. Especially Botswana.
Probably Thailand but move around se asia
I'm from the USA but I've been to Canada and would love to live in BC
Belize
Born in England, would love to move to Spain. Not that exotic but, food is good, people are nice, it’s hot, Europeans so some shared cultural values, I don’t speak Spanish but I would learn, I like the language.
Would never move to anywhere in the US, sadly, because that place is bat shit crazy. South America looks pretty but poor and full of cartels. Australia is where Satan keeps his pets, that’s a no. UAE don’t have shared cultural values, same as Africa and Asia.
I guess for me somewhere with western values, must be hot all year round, good food and people are nice. Thriving economy if I have to consider money.
Spain is my only conclusion - minus the thriving economy.
England
I had a Porsche repair shop in California, I'm retired early in Mexico.
Food is 1/2 or less, housing is 1/4, clothes are the same, restaurants are less than 1/2, and medicine, Doctors, or Hospitals are 5% of the prices in the US.
The people are beautiful, the food is incredible, and I wear surf trunks about 360 days a year except when I'm motorcycling.
We've been here 12 years, and the only crime we've been the victims of were the theft of a spare tire 8 years ago from the bed of my truck, and somebody broke into our car without damaging much and stole a few pesos change and a USB thumb drive. Added up, 25 bucks in all that time. Today, an old Canadian woman tried to steal our shopping cart in the store, but we stopped her.
South of Argentina... Trevelin probably.
It's just so beautiful, not too many people, really cheap, delicious food and locals are very friendly to the people from my country.
Anywhere that's not America, being gay is getting dangerous here, and I'm full rainbow all the time, soooooo
I cycled through the Netherlands back in June, coming from the U.S where cars actively try to hit cyclists the Netherlands were amazing. Plus it was light out until like 10pm...I know I could at least summer in the Netherlands..maybe spend winter somewhere on the equator?
Thailand.
Portugal.
Portugal
Nigeria/Ghana (tie)
The country where I was born is not my dream country in anyway 😂
Australia Moved there 40 years ago...Fantastic
Iceland
Thailand. Low cost of living. Good climate. Lots of fresh fruits. Good food.
It would be a dream to cycle and live car-free/light in the Netherlands
Norway, because it’s exactly like the country I’m born in, but has mountains.
I'd really like to live in Soumi Finland. The climate is similar to what I'm used to and the locals seem really chill.
I’m American- I don’t have a dream country but a whole summer in the Cotswold country side in England sounds lovely to me
Costa Rica.
Honestly came here expecting to find it high up but alas, nowhere to be found. From California Bd from what I have seen, that country (outside ghr cities) is heaven on earth. Just so gorgeous.
I live in a Greek island. So I would want a place like Norway where I will not miss the sea and summer doesn't mean you have to constantly be under an A/C or at the sea.
Affordable end - Greece . Expensive end - Switzerland.
