When you look at the posts critical of WFH or just generally complaining about it, it's a lot of relatively new accounts and/or old accounts but with low prior engagement that suddenly are so concerned about WFH above all else that they start posting again?
It seems unlikely to me that a bunch of 500—5000 karma people all start making the same droning complaints about missing out on water cooler chats and pizza parties and the other bizarre office social encounters most of us tolerated just to get a break from the monotony of being there in the first place.
While I'm sure a...few? of these laments are genuine - It just feels a bit sus to me. When I see someone sad that they don't see their cubicle wall calendar anymore or some nonsense, it looks very botty/brigade-y.

Well... To be fair it is daunting to go against the popular opinion, especially in this case. People are super on edge because they assume that everyone who doesn't enjoy WFH is astroturfing which I totally get... But it often leads to people who don't like WFH getting insulted in these sorts of posts.

I'm always quite loud about wanting everyone who can and wants to work remote should be able to.

But when everyone was remote, the roads were more open, everyone traveled more (which you can use as a "boosts the economy" point), and less car accidents

I moved 1.5 hours away from the office last year, which was my fourth year in my current role, and after working remotely for about two years and therefore proving myself. Am working almost fully remotely now, and loving it. I will forever be a strong and vocal proponent of WFH and its many benefits for employees.
I've worked under my current supervisor for almost 4 years, starting in 2020 with COVID. At our last performance review I was told that I was a valuable asset to the team, so I have leverage to work with, which I know that not everyone has. In fact, the reason I moved 2 hours away was to pursue my Master's using a tuition reimbursement policy that was part of my benefits package. I know my worth, and so does my employer, and as a result we have a very mutually beneficial workplace.
Also, this shit should be normal for everyone, not somebody with a highly in-demand degree. I'm only 27 but have benefits that a very small fraction of the (US) workforce can even think of having.
I don't understand why there is so much of a return to the office push. Surely employers would be jumping at the chance to reduce their real estate cost and push that onto the employee. How is this not them laughing at us peasants paying their electricity, internet and rent for them to work for them.
Commercial real estate leases are long. The company I work for got a sweetheart deal for signing a 10 year lease in 2019, so that money is going to be spent whether we are in office or not. They also got tax incentives to open an office. The city is pushing them to bring us back to the office or they will rescind that tax deal. All in, we are being forced back into the office next week. I’ve started looking for a new job because I prefer working from home.
That may be the case but lighting, air-conditioning and electricity for all the equipment would surely be significant. Even if they left the office dormant or used the space for storage it would still come out cheaper.

The costs likely are, but if the city is going to remove the tax breaks, it may be cheaper to have us back in the office. I don’t like it and don’t agree that it’s a good idea, but for the most part, companies will make the decision that costs them less money.

How does bringing back employees reduce that? They are paying it if the employees are there or not. It actually makes it higher.
Yes theyre in a contract, so it wouldnt reduce it as maybe the penalty to end the contract is too great to end. But why would it be higher?
It wouldn't be higher it would only be lower if they don't need to keep a floor open.
If the employees were working from home and depending on the site of the company they could reduce their footprint by a floor or two where the rent can be reduced and would not need to power all the lights and equipment.

well I for one refuse to work in an office ever again. I don't care about salary. I will just not go to the corporate middle class cesspool that is the office.
I have saved enough to be unemployed for a few years. If I find myself searching for a job, I'll take it slowly. If for any reason these assholes have won their anti WFH crusade, I'll consider becoming self employed. I don't need much money, but what I do need for my life to be meaningful is to stay away from the corporate, middle class virus.
I'm lucky enough to be able to retire anytime and thanks to my job now requiring 50% rto, it will be this year once they realize I'm still working from home 100%
4 years putting off needing/wanting to buy a new car and a 90 percent cut in gas usage is pretty hard to give up.
Not sure there is even a price for me to give up not dealing with road rage afternoon commute drivers, stuck in traffic, etc.

senior dev, remote since 2016. wfh is non-negotiable for me. never again in the office. no hybrid. not even once a week.

I don't think they could pass legal legislation to require office work, it would be a huge violation of the ADA and a discrimination magnet.
I hope I never have the displeasure of ever working inside an office again.
I'm far more safer, cleaner, healthier, able to be who I am, save on money, less stress, less wear and tear on EVERYTHING, and I can keep an eye on my aging mother as well as watch out for my disabled spouse.
If you're in a place that's relatively comfortable work wise, make sure you are open to having these conversations with recruiters.
I'm not actively looking for a job but I'm on job boards and have recruiters contact me about once a week. I love giving them feedback that their salary offers don't match market standards, ESPECIALLY if they're requiring in office for my role. I also make sure to tell them that this position can and should be done from home.
I don't talk to anyone that is within a 30 mile radius of me for work - most are in other states. Why would I need to be in office for five zoom calls a week and working on my own the rest of the time??
As a disabled person who NEEDS remote work in order to work, I thank you very much for doing this.
Remote should be the default, or at least offered, if the position can be done remotely. I shouldn’t have to jump hoops to demand accommodation (it rarely works anyway) for something that should be the default.
As a fellow disabled person, can we even get a remote work accommodation?
It’s hard. I was a naive dipshit and once disclosed at the interview stage so of course they ghosted me.
Nowadays I only look for fully remote roles that are advertised as remote/wfh/telecommute. I don’t have the energy or patience to deal with ADA accommodations. They will always find a reason to hold it against you, and you’ll be in the next round of layoffs.
Not that I’m having much luck looking these days. I’ve had a remote job for 5+ years now but it’s “part time” no benefits (I work nearly full time hours all year, and all I get are a few vacation days, minimum state mandated sick time, and for some weird reason life insurance). Trying to find something better has been real hard.
The RTO push is really hurting people like us.
Commercial real-estate is crashing and burning. It's been bad since COVID, but we're starting to reach the point where the value of the buildings are less than the mortgages on them. The panic is real, and as those loans start to sour, and companies start to shuffle assets and declare bankruptcy to turn over the buildings rather than continue to pay upside-down loans.... We're going to see the beginnings of an economic crash the likes we've never seen before.

Most companies don't. But the "RTO push" isn't most companies. It's the media cherry picking stories to make RTO seem like the norm, to try and influence more companies to RTO.
I've always been pro-WFH and always will be pro-WFH. Especially if you work in an environment where your job doesn't specifically require you to be in an office. I can do my job from anywhere there is power and internet. The devices and tools I access all can be accessed remotely, so it makes no sense to drive to an office when I can sit in my home office and get work done far more efficiently. Thankfully our senior leadership also realized this and made us permanent remote.
I’ve heard of several instances of employees organizing boycotts of businesses close to their offices, especially in downtown/core areas.
Ultimately it’s about propping up commercial property values-which seemed like they were in trouble pre-pandemic. Forcing people back into offices isn’t going to help- people with the skills and opportunities to WFH are going to seize them, and it will eventually bite companies in the ass when their best talent bails.
My company just announced 50% RTO after touting for years that they would never do such a thing. The CEO even began the announcement saying "we've seen a troubling increase in people putting their personal lives first".

Well, a lot of the fortune 500s have lots of money invested in commercial real estate. So, they are spending tons of money on this anti-WFH propaganda push combined with using bots on Reddit in order to attempt to protect their $$$.
Absolutely. I feel like someone should have the, “Learn how to make your own lattes and avocado toast,” conversation with these companies about not investing so much in commercial real estate.
Haven't read the article, but the anti-WFH crowd are definitely very vocal in their views and in their disdain of people who prefer to WFH or who consider WFH to be beneficial (particularly for employees).
Remote employees need to stand firm and be vocal about how WFH works for them and benefits them, and hope they have managers who are human, and who listen and care.
