This might have worked 20 years ago for a couple of months but not in today's cameras everywhere world.
Yeah, most units say right in the contract that, at very least, you are not allowed to sleep there. Mine says that if I'm seen doing anything other than placing items in or removing items, my contract will be voided, and I will be banned from the property.
Depends on the units. My friend runs her Etsy business out if a storage unit. As long as she doesn't have clients come in they allow her to work in it like an office. It's climate controlled and there's a bathroom at the end of the hallway. I helped her finish a big order one time and it was cozy.
There’s also a movement towards rentable office space for people to do exactly this. Neat idea
Wework punching the air rn
Working in it and living in it are different
The other rule in the industry generally is as long as your door is open when you’re in the unit, you’re good.
That being said, if you’re just lounging in the unit every day you will most likely have a prop manager asking you what you are doing in the unit. It rides the line of using the unit as a habitable space.
Like if you dance or stand on one leg?
Maybe. I'm not taking my chances.
Dang man, I'm sorry that you have to hold your breath or not blink everytime you haul items to/from your storage.
This truly is the darkest timeline.
Just make sure you're holding a box and then you're good haha
Make sure you cut a hole in that box too!
More like no band practice, no sleeping, no using the unit as a workshop, etc.
Don't know why but I misread that as worship not workshop. Now I am thinking of holding possible seance there for a cult 🙌
You may not exceed three circle spins, two cartwheels and two Skip to My Lou's.
Can I do the Hokey Pokey and turn myself around?
That’s what it’s all about ! 🙃
I'm sure that's kept vague for the benefit of the owners, knowing for a fact that humans are constantly finding new ways to be disgusting and weird.
it's really for the benefit of people too. There's a minimum standard you have to meet to be allowed to sell a place as a living area.
most units say right in the contract that, at very least, you are not allowed to sleep there
This is how I got into meth.
Then what would you do with all that stuff you're not using?
It sits there waiting for you until you need it, or until you find a bigger living space that can also store all your things that you don't use every day.
Well, I hope you get to use it before you've spent more storing it than it would cost to buy new!
I feel pretty safe in that aspect, seeing how prices of everything are going up up up. I got a pretty cheap unit and am looking for a bigger place right now, so it's all good.
Well then I'm happy for you. I guess I'm jaded by watching my in-laws store crap they're never gonna use for years.
I needed something out of my storage unit, bout 3 months ago I drive up at 6pm. Storage unit management leaves at 6pm the number of homeless people that came out of storage units as I was digging through mine was astounding.
Fr, people are extremely naive if they think tons of people aren't living in storage units. There may be surveillance, but unless something happens, no one reviews that footage. The owners are only really motivated to remove them if the rent isn't getting paid.
There are certain “tricks of the trade” that are utilized to ensure people aren’t living in units. Not to say people can’t get away with it… but if a property manager is actually doing their job, a tenant won’t get away with it for too long.
None of the options homeless people are forced to resort to are long-term solutions, and they absolutely know this. They aren't living in storage units for the long haul, it's just the latest temporary shelter of many they've resided in.
I'd go as far as saying the majority of people doing jobs are not doing their jobs properly. There's storage lots here that have plenty of people lurking in em
Are they even homeless if they're living in storage units? /s
Have your buddy wheel you in a tub and boom you’re in.
Even if it works this is incredibly dangerous. Not just an extreme fire hazard and a risk of being trapped, but commercial/industrial spaces like this do not have the kind of ventilation required to sustain someone living in a confined space. Also, people put crazy shit into storage units and rarely follow the safe storage requirements (old batteries, chemicals, dirty rags, old food that attracts bugs and rodents, etc).
If you slept here on a regular basis there is a reasonable chance that eventually you would end up with either serious health issues or straight up dead.
But is it more dangerous than under a highway bridge or in an abandoned house or behind a dumpster in the alley? IDK I'm just glad I don't have to make the decision for myself
All risks that people have to take when life has caused them to live in a storage unit.
Probably 15 people living in these kinds of units at the public storage in Venice, CA right now.
Even 20 years ago it didn't work.
Friend of my family was caught doing this. He'd park at the storage unit and sleep in his van in the parking lot. He'd then go in, get dressed, ect.
He claimed that he kept to his end of the contract as he didn't sleep in the unit itself, but in his vehicle. They terminated it because storage units can basically kill the lease/contract whenever and for whatever they want.
Considering he was there literally every single day... yeah, they weren't happy.
And then he recorded himself and puts it online
150/mo for just a room might be able to swing an air mattress in a living room in a non-infested place if you ask around. Everyone is hurting and $150 is $150 gain for what is essentially a long term couch surfer.
Minimal amenities month to month. Continue to the mini storage for personal possessions while unhoused. Alternatively adding chores to make someone agree to the $150 is doable as well. One of the few easy to service trade as chores are repetitive an extra hand is expensive outside of a trade
I live in a HCOL city and people are charging $500 MINIMUM to add your air mattress to their living room/hallway/walk in closet. No exaggeration.
Two years ago, I saw someone renting a mattress in a broken-down car parked in their yard.$ 600/mo. No access to the house.
Wild
Yeah right. I live in a mid sized Canadian city and people are renting out their apartment hallways for almost $1k.
I was fully expecting a dope transformation but instead I got depression.
Me too. I was hoping to see a decent little bed, maybe a little cupboard, a little stove...
Nope. Just said "aaw" when he laid on the floor.
I know what everyone else is saying is true, but I'd hoped for a little paradise for him until he gets kicked out.
This dude ain't living here 😂
This guy did it better, he had water and electricity https://youtu.be/HPVCTLPNUzo
Don't storage units specifically not allow this kind of thing?
Wait just watched the video. Dude how do you shower 😭 you're just homeless at this point
Just pay monthly to belong to a gym I guess. Workout and shower. Planet Fitness might be the most affordable, but I have no idea. Thankfully I haven't been in such a position.
Yep. Planet Fitness is the way to go, or you can go to a larger truckers bathroom, some of them are equipped with showers that you schedule.
To answer the question about not having power, some units have a single receptacle, mine did. It was on the ceiling and I was able to plug in a stereo and I slept on a couch. In the summer it was too hot, the metal turns it into an oven so I didn’t stay there.
and get the black card membership, you get to lounge around and get free massage bed all day. If I go homeless It'll be my car and the gym.
I’m fortunate that it didn’t last long for me, it’s not fun. People think it’s sleeping under an overpass but a lot of that is untreated mental illness and societal neglect. There are a lot of people who sleep in their car, or have a bunk at the some non-profit that lets you stay until 7am, or apartment hallways with proper AC, and some of those people have jobs and expenses.
This is what I did. I was homeless for almost three years, and it was way safer than sleeping outside.
My pops used to be homeless off and on and definitely figured out the trick.
For him, it was a combination of tent camping, house hopping, and storage unit living. But he did get caught living in a storage unit once and he got a really big fine because it’s unsafe due to lack of ventilation. They weren’t really concerned about the rest. It was just ventilation.
He would buy state park passes, and that allowed him to shower and get clean water and stuff
Where do you take a shit at night?
Our storage center has a public bathroom so I guess train yourself to wait until normal hours? Or a bucket?
$25/month to join Goodlife Fitness in Canada, and they have outlets everywhere. I was seriously thinking about this when I was still drinking.
Where do you live that that's the case?? I live in Alberta and the cheapest Goodlife Fitness I've seen is $60 a month plus a $50 joining fee. Most of the places are $68 a month (plus the same joining fee) , and they to up to $110 a month.
Here, they try to make it look cheaper than it is because they list the prices as "every other week" instead of on a monthly basis 😒 so it's a twice-monthly payment of $29.99
Or just go to a truck stop?
It's somewhat safer than homeless options for cars or tents; if you live out of your car it's easy to be broken into, for folks to see you and bad things happen, or for your shit to get stolen. Same with tents. Risk here is getting caught. Honestly imo this is what we should bully those micro apartment owners into doing. I don't get how we can claim a homeless crisis and do so little to alleviate it. Most of those micro apartments require a credit score of 750+ and (in Seattle) can be 2-3k/month depending on the area, so most of my patients can't humor them as an option even with jobs. Wait list for affordable options is several years at this point. I wish I could prescribe housing.
It is homelessness
True, I'll claify
No shit. That’s kind of the point. But at least this is safer and more comfortable than sleeping “outside”. I’ve done this before and it got me through without having to be exposed to other dangerous people when I slept. I got attacked by fire ants, but 100% better than getting attacked or robbed by people. This is something a lot of people go through, and as a person who has to shower twice a day to feel human, having planet fitness right across the street was awesome.
Well yeah, living in a storage unit = homeless but with decent shelter.
A lot of showers at freeway gas stations in the US. Mainly for the truckers on the road. You pay to use them too but some of them are pretty well kept:
Live in storage units shower at the gym, specifically planet fitness gym.
Fast food bathrooms

Where I live in south Texas they have electricity and a lot of them are climate controlled.
Brother why even make this comment without checking. Very common for them to come with outlets lmao just a wild swing and miss, idk
It’s actually very common for storages to have electric. Back in the 90’s not so much but definitely in this day and age.
You could just look at the video and see if the fan is working.
I worked in self storage for a while. This is very common. We would kick people out all the time for living in their units.
Secret camping. My city also says no camping on public property that has no campground zoning or isn't on backwoods reserves for 7 consecutive nights, so no homeless can legally exist long term
I had all my stuff in a storage unit for a bit and there was definitely a guy living in one of the units while I had mine there. He was never being a bother. Either somehow no one knew even though there were cameras everywhere, or everyone just looked the other way.
I had a storage unit neighbor that had his wife and children living in his huge storage unit, he litterly slept in unit every night. I maintained my construction equipment, tools, trailer in the unit, and would visit it daily while I worked on project out of town. I'd see this young man and his family hunkering down for the night, on several occasions I had a chance to talk to the young family, due to a series of unfortunate events they went from middle income family with good job, two cars, to homeless. It began with there 7 yr old son having health issues, following by loss of his job due to the same, having to miss work due to having to travel out of town for surgery, in the end health insurance premium was the final straw. Company let long time employee go. With child still I'll they sold a boat, and one car, to maintain son's health care. Father unable to find a job, took on a job at a fast food joint, were he was working when l met him, they ended up losing there home, in foreclosure, causing them to move all belongings into the storage unit, the elderly couple who owned storage company felt bad for family allowed them to stay overnight. In the end my job was completed, I offered the father a job in California he had accounting background I needed and estimator to assist on bidding on government projects. We were in Arizona, he moved to California with his family, my insurance company agreed to take on new employee with pre- exsisting health issues being as his son was now in remission. Father worked out great in his position, he stayed on full time, I moved them into one of my Condo rentals. In the end every worked out son is still healthy, father is my Office manager, and Mom is our Condo rental manager.
Wow. You did a fabulous job. So kind and thoughtful. I'm proud of you, internet stranger!! Hopefully Karma will see you right 🩷
Already did meeting this young man and his family, great people, great employees and now good friends.
This so many unhoused folks' stories. Folks don't realize many inhoused people work full time, but in exceedingly low wage jobs because they often have barriers regarding transportation, etc. Good for you for showing him compassion in a time of need.
Everyone’s like “oh this would never work” I know for a fact that a storage place right by my house lets people live in the units there’s homeless people biking in and out if there all day
They're thinking of the big chain storage places. I've seen some smaller ones that don't even have a gate let alone a guard.
Yup, I knew a lady who lived in a storage unit for years. She even received her mail there and the employees at the storage place would hold it for her. Its not that hard to believe that there are people out there willing to look the other way for someone to have a safe and dry place to sleep.
Nah In places like NYC the shelters pay for storage units for people in some cases
Some people are in fact homeless and keep a shelter as a closet for their belongings but don’t necessarily sleep there
Yeah my sister had to live out of a storage unit for like a year, in fucking Georgia. God damn, it had to smell bad in there
The self storage people ain't stupid. If he's trying to live in a unit he's already homeless but there's a good chance he's about to get homeless and unsheltered the moment they spot him on CCTV or notice he's visiting his unit twice a day. America is a super broken place :(
One guy recently went viral. Had his wife and kids in there. TikTok made it hot, and got kicked out a few days later.
Like why do you need to record for TikTok when you’re breaking important rules regarding your housing?
Hoping to use fame to outrun their homelessness
Which there's a chance it will
Got a link?
Well I mean ya, you can’t have a kid living in a storage unit lol
as opposed to living in the streets? What do people expect families to do when rent becomes so unaffordable, just die?
I’m sorry, but it’s hard to feel bad for this person when he fucking posted it to social media.
Not every good idea needs to be blasted out for everybody to see as if keeping your mouth shut would be some kind of detriment to the human race.
I agree that it's putting himself at risk, and it's hard to feel bad for this on its own merit. However, it does expose a problem. I've been homeless, and I wish we stayed in a storage unit. Instead, we got evicted out of unit after unit.
A significant chunk of my life lacked any foundation. This video also makes me feel hatred towards landlords and owners.
They need this except zoned for it with a shared toilet. There needs to be a legally reconcognized option between apartment and homeless.
Apartment -> ???? -> Homeless
Society needs to pull it's shit together and figure out what ???? is going to be
Communal living spaces/small hostels.
Like Uni dorms. Shared rooms/bunk beds. Shared toilets/showers. Maybe a few kitchens, or small electric stoves, or maybe just microwaves.
You pay a couple of hundred (or less) dollars each depending in the size/number of people.
Yea it don’t got privacy, or individual bathrooms/kitchens, but it’s dogshit cheap.
People get all freaked out when they see these kind of living arrangements in Asia but it’s definitely better than living on the street
We have these, they're still fucking expensive. One was being proposed in Sacramento last year, it was around 100sq with a communal kitchen/bathroom. 1,300/month. They tried to frame it as affordable because "it's in the heart of the city. You won't be spending much time at home when you can be out having fun".
I feel like building codes would get in the way of a something like this being as cheap as storage units. You need to have windows and such in a room to legally be considered safe for sleeping. A hostel type thing could work, but that means literally sharing rooms instead of having individual tiny units.
My hometown has a place like that. Pay $15 a night for a bunk bed and have access to shared bathroom and other spaces. Definitely not ideal but if you're down on your luck it's a place to stay.
it used to be "hotels". SF still has some: you get a room, there's a shared bathroom and kitchen. Perfect if you're single and don't need a lot.
I don't like the way your arrows are pointing.
But recently they do appear to be accurate.
We had them where I grew up. Like $150/week for a small room and attached bathroom. Whole thing together was probably 150 sq ft. It also would be a really great way to repurpose an old hotel.
In New York State at least you can go to DSS and ask for emergency assistance with housing and they have to put you in a shelter or hotel. Where I live they also have an emergency after hours number through the sherrif’s dept. Not perfect but the resource does exist for people wondering.
Great for New Yorkers, but yea that's along the lines of filling in the ????
The ???? is staying at a family/friends place or a shelter.
E: It's amazing seeing all of you guys to come to together to educate someone on the homelessness problem and trying to find somewhere to live that isn't with a family member/friends /srs. But I'm well aware of the state of shelters and how they're full, they're dirty, they're unsafe, they have rules and restrictions like a curfew, there aren't enough for single men, there may not be some where you live, etc.
I'm also well aware that you may not have family to go to like if you're escaping from your family and don't have any friends you can stay with whether it's because theyre struggling too, just aren't comfortable with you there, or because you just don't have any friends.
I agree with you all that the answer to helping homeless people isn't arresting them and throwing them in jail, because all that's saying is that it's a crime to just be struggling in life. All that is saying is that it's illegal to escape your abusive parents/partner with no where to go. It's saying that it's illegal to have a mental illness that a therapist or medication can't fix or if they can fix it, you're breaking the law because you can't afford it.
I agree with you all that if the government really wanted to fix homelessness, they could easily do so by not making homelessness a crime, giving us affordable housing, better public education, giving us better and more affordable healthcare, making it easier to access food. And then do all this without cutting them off the second they have just enough money to afford one of these but not all of these like how they do with food stamps.
All I'm saying is that for SOME people there isn't a straight jump going from having an apartment to living on the street. Some people may think that staying in a shelter (if they can find one) is a better option than staying with their family or sleeping in the rain or sleeping under an underpass and possibly getting arrested for it. SOME people may actually have family and friends they can stay with for a while but because they're so stressed out from the situation and while possibly juggling 50 other things, may forget that they have people they can lean on.
All I have left to say is go vote while we still can
People don’t let friends Stay at there places else there wouldn’t be homeless
& shelters have the worst policies in the US and are sorely too few. Many shelters do not allow being employed so no way to advance your life, many shelters kick you out every single night and do not allow storage of belongings, so again shelters are not it.
The truth is homeless could be resolved in a single year if society powers wanted. I doubt it will ever get addressed ardently unless the US falls apart so bad that people start leaving the US. And that won’t happen in any living persons lifetime.
The purpose of a system is what it does, and homelessness is a great way to terrify everyone else out of organizing.
family/friends/shelter = homeless
Nobody wants you around indefinitely (okay family maybe).
America isnt broken. The system is funneling money upwards just as intended.
You'd have to do this for less than a few months and you'd need a big friend group fully dedicated to helping you (in which case... Just live with them.) every night you, a large group, go in with empty boxes. All the group but you leave. In the morning, group come back and take boxes + you.
Security would be unlikely to notice 7 entered and 6 left.
Is this an example of the least efficient way to clean a space or something? Why he bringing out the toothbrush before a sweeping brush or a mop? Anti-bac wipes? Get serious my dude.
He is homeless you think he has a mop or Lysol wipes
He clearly had enough time and resource to go to the store to get the cleaning products he is using so yeah I do think he could have gotten better cleaning materials. I can see two types of antibacterial spray, a micro cloth, the tub of wipes, the toothbrush and some paper towels in this video.
I also doubt he is really homeless or if he is, he hasn’t been for long, because people who are unhoused know that storage units are one of the hardest places to hide in, usually. Those that do hide in them tend to hide their bedding etc during the day in case anyone checks the unit.
You can reuse those materials but can't use a mop other than for mopping. Do you even try being ungainfully employed? Your logic only works for money wasting
This won't last long, storage unit companies have security guards checking units on a daily basis. You usually have to go past security to gain entry once it gets past a certain time too.
I worked in storage for a decade all over a major city. I never knew a single place that had 'security guards'. It's like any other major american business. They're not spending a cent more then they have to. I was the security guard (and the janitor, and the manager, and the therapist).
But it's true, unless the owners are extremely negligent it's impossible not to know someone is living in your building. I used to let the non-trouble maker homeless people sleep in their units during the day when I was there if they didn't bother anyone. Overnight was an absolutely not. If someone posted it on the internet I would run to evict them because they're putting the managers jobs on the line.
Sleeping in during the day is a level I haven't thought of. Definitely better than getting caught.
Lots of night shift duties to keep occupied for some pay
I only let certain people do that who I knew well, but it worked out well and I felt good helping them out. If my boss or the owners were visiting i'd let them know and they'd clear out.
Most storage places have the managers live on site (again, the managers are everything) so they'd be the night shift too. That's another reason it's hard to get away with it. Not just because of cameras and gate codes but when you live there you don't want other people living there.
Though I worked in a couple sketchy areas and I never went out on property at night for my own saftey. If someone was trying to live in it i'd log it and confront them in the morning. That said I knew a couple boomer managers who'd gladly confront anyone living there at night at any time- fully armed.
I know he'd be kicked out ASAP is this were an actual thing, but the fact something like this is even considered, even for some kind of hyperbolic sarcasm/humor is just..man, we're just so broken.
ngl I hate it here. I know no country is perfect, but..just..damn.
For context: I saw this on tiktok and checked the account, that guy apparently got a divorce with his wife on the past tiktok vids they have (they have been having problems in the marriage and it was recorded on all tiktoks they had together) and this was the recent ones where he moved out and lived on that storage unit
Thank you kind stranger
The social contract is failing and it's making society collapse.
Hey hey hey, your boss can't afford another super car and the government more weapons to a genocidal country with that attitude. If you keep noticing this king of thing, how will we build another 2000 war planes?
I honestly believe developers should provide small single unit, affordable housing. Just a bed, closet and kitchenette. Payable month to month contract. I lived in a compact unit in Tokyo for 6 months and in Hong Kong for 4 months and I loved it. You could even have a communal bathroom/shower shared by 4 units. This will allow people to catch up on debt, save money and get ahead.
We need to start taking care of each other. We’re all on the same team. If one member of the team isn’t doing well, the whole team suffers.
:(
Just breaks my heart.
You can tell he has never done any of it before.
Could be any of us really.
I own a campervan for this exact reason, it's a just in case things go south i atleast have a bed and somewhere to call home, spent two years in a car but it beats living on the street itself. Bit it was kinda fun in a way although you get some horrible humans out there hitting your windows and telling you to piss off like they own the roads.
Idk how this is cringe 🤷 he’s just trying to get through life
Bro, this aint prison. You can use something other than a toothbrush and a rag 🙄
There is no power in those units. Staged fake video Fan and tv never worked
Why don't he just start a cleaning service ... he's good at it.
I like that my mans shakes his head in disgust at how dirty the cracks between the floor and wall were. As if the storage unit company should’ve cleaned it better before renting it out for him to sleep in.
If push came to shove I'd get a gym membership for the shower and internet and live in my car.
Bro gonna fart n that mf n die
Get some foam
Last time I heard of people doing this was in 2008. I personally knew someone. Fuck we all know what happened in 08.
My man hasn't heard about mops.
Indian here... Is it THAT BAD in USA? Are the rent prices so high in all the major cities?
This is totally faked.
I lived in a 1,200 sq ft storage unit for a year in college for $400/mo. Built an office, bedroom and a shower in the bathroom. It was extremely depressing going days without sunlight.
See this is how I know I'm trash. I see people with nothing or next to nothing and taking better care of themselves than I am. This guy's wiping down his whole place making sure the joint is clean. I would be like well my life's pretty much over anyway, might as well just toss my crap down here and sleep. Same for some of these cooking videos where someone takes Ramen and adds 15 spices to it and a few vegetables and makes a meal. I'm more like crack the package open to eat the noodles dry with the powder sprinkled over them and drink a glass of water.
What's wrong with me
It would be easier and more comfortable to just go to prison
People need to understand that this is illegal in most states. Also, due to it not being a residential lease, you don't have to be given a 30-day eviction. It can be a 24-hour eviction
Im not supporting it but it's not that they don't understand. It's "is it worth the risk?" Homelessness is becoming a growing trend as housing becomes significantly more expensive and difficult to sustain. When you hear the idea of a low cost large lockerz the idea doesn't just not come to mind.
Hell some of them are climate controlled. Yes it's very illegal and very risky. But people do what they can if they think they'd get away with it and survive.
Precisely. If it were between not having an actual roof over your head and this….I’d honestly give it a shot. I think most would. Not like they’d be likely to have you arrested, so long as you left when told to do so, if caught. And honestly if you did it at a facility that isn’t fancy and/or in a less savory part of town, maybe you’d be lucky enough for them not to give AF.
I’m guessing that’s what the thought process is for people who do this anyways. And who knows, maybe he’s choosing to be homeless by choice and just wants to get ahead. Saving $1400 on rent every month if you choose to rough it out for even just 6 months equals out to be a comfy cushion in it for you in the end. If someone were trying to speedrun escaping from debt, or they live paycheck to paycheck normally and want to build a solid rainy day fund, or if want to save up to move out of state or something….I can totally see them resorting to these means to do so, even if they could be housed if they wanted to. Not saying that’s the typical nor ideal situation, but I’ve seen plenty of folks on r/malelivingspace that legitimately live more or less this way on purpose in order to save money. You’d be surprised at how little some people need to be content.
Anyone who believes this wasn't staged needs to get themselves institutionalised.
Anyone who thinks this isn’t happening all over the country these days needs to get a reality check.
Where does he take a dump?
Extremely illegal and very dangerous as well. But…i also get it. What a miserable situation.
Cool that we're continuing to actively bring Snow Crash to life in all the little ways that made it so horrifying.
Wth?? Someone told me this is illegal, why aren’t we all doing this?! Genius
When I lived in west TX 10 years ago this was happening a lot!!
Better to get a tent and camp near a tent city tbh
Trust me I’ve thought about it too, it’s 100 dollars a month for it and if it’s heated and comes with a plug in the wall I’d live there
This shit is sad but I do feel like we should bring back the "flop house" but with some kind of modern spin. Some way of providing high density living spaces that are built cheaply and completely rent controlled and delivered at cost in urban areas. it probably seems inhumane but how could it be more inhumane than letting people go homeless or work 2 jobs only to live in similarly poor accomodations. Government housing has problems, sure, and flop houses or slumlord dwellings too. Removing the profit motive and setting a lower price floor would keep rent prices down. This can be achieved with rent controls but those have their own distortive effects.
Idk it's damned if you do damned if you don't right now and I honestly feel like the two problems are insufficient supply of housing, what new supply bring created intended to maximize revenue which means currently creating housing for rich people, penalization of development because of a property value tax versus a land tax, and outsized benefits from purchasing property with the intention of renting it out because people have to live somewhere.
Same with healthcare and food. People can't go without these things and there are insufficient public options to minimize the value of rent seeking.
Simply put the market is NOT "taking care of it" currently.
Edit: I forgot to add that modular housing construction practices should allow us to do a much better job this time around versus the gigantic expensive but shitty government housing complexes of yore
i wouldnt say this comes under cringe.
its a person going through hardship. nobody does this if they dont have to.
He will be discovered, removed, and arrested so fast it's not funny. They're pretty clear on not allowing this.
Quite a few people have done this for years only to be found out after they posted on social media about it.
Car/Van > Storage Unit 100%. Fuck I'll take a tent over that.
I dont often say things on Reddit, but stay strong, better times will come.
This is dystopic af
There was a guy clearly living in his storage unit near mine. I left him some drinks. It got hot enough in that thing to melt all my candles and some plastic once. It had to have been just horrible to live there
I jokingly asked the employee of the storage place I have what would happen if I lived there. She said they would immediately cancel your contract and kick you out. She did not sound happy either.
This is not something to joke about.
I did my best to read all the comments before posting how to do this right. Happened to me just like this guy. Divorce, unemployment, under employment and credit woes will keep you down a VERY long time before you have enough to move back out.
1) rent in a section that is cliimate controlled. Prop the side door before gate close. Gate access ends at 9pm, begins at 6am. Don't punch in anywhere near that time or you're going to look suspect. You've got to arrive on the regular after dark to go to bed, so get used to hopping the fence at the easiest, least camera'd points. POINTS, not point. Don't come in and out of the place from the same entry point every night, what are you crazy?
2) when you get to your unit, beeline it, get in, take your lock and put it through the latch lock mechanism to where the lock looks locked, but it's in the second/open position. That way you can't get latched in from outside, and it looks secure and closed from the outside.
3) have a very comfortable place to sleep. In my case, I put my couch cushions atop my boxes. If you don't get a deep night's sleep, you won't get good work done and you'll stay in this spot for too long.
4) have your alarm set. Know that you're in after 9pm and out before 6am. You don't want to get startled by someone coming in when you're settling in, and you don't want to be startling someone coming out after 6am when someone's coming in.
5) when it gets too hot, get out of your unit and go into the hallway or vestibule of one of the climate control hallways, out of view of cameras. Stay there. Don't be getting up at all if you can avoid it. Use the exit door area to take a leak on occasion perhaps, but that's about it. Don't be gross. Have a pee bottle, toss the pee somewhere in the bushes, wash it out at Starbucks when you leave in the morning to go beeline it for your morning shit.
6) have a shower spot, obviously. Mine was a local pool that opened very early for lap swimmers. Nobody questions a guy coming in just to shower and leave. They can do the math.
7) keep water, food on hand but obviously keep nothing perishable. Or if you do, have a cooler and ice and don't do it often, because it's too much work and time you being there at the unit. The fucking managers hate seeing someone at their unit every fucking day. They have seen what a living in - using daily - homeless guy storage unit looks like. They WILL drive by you the minute they see you're at your unit during business hours and come hound you and ask you stupid fucking questions to sort of advise you that 'they're onto you, maybe'.
8) get used to the fact that you may hear other homeless individuals come or go. It's fucking spooky and weird and if that happens, you probably want to find a couch surf, tent spot or other off site locales to mix shit up. Or find a different storage place. Keep your options fucking wide open.
9) look put together. Keep the place tidy. Don't spend much time there, ever. Get the fuck out of there and stay the fuck out of there. You come to sleep, get a change of clothes ready for the next day, do your laundry on Sundays after the managers are off but before laundromats close so you can keeep your fuCKING DIGNITY. You're gonna need that.
10) don't think you won't have some unfortunate run-ins. You will. Be ready to do something about it, which is to shut your mouth, close your unit, walk away and don't make contact with whoever the fuck just caught you in your unit again for as long as possible. Whatever caused that run-in.. change whatever caused that to happen.
The odds and ends - I got way too bar drunk for way too long for the year I had to do this shit. Because there was nothing else open until late enough to where I felt comfortable that no one would be roaming the place or coming in or out after gate close, etc. It SUCKED. I didn't want to spend money drinking, but there just isn't any retail like Starbucks open near most storage places. Taco Bell and McDonalds' wi-fis can be a big help and cheaper and such.. but a lot of places like that tended to y'know not want you loitering for over 30-60 minutes and often closed the lobby by 8 or 9pm, and I needed to be out past 10pm to be safe doing this.
Easily the worst WORST WORST experience I had was when I slept in a pup tent on the perimeter of the storage, out on the skirt that faced the alleyway of the retail behind it. Outside the fence line. A no-man's claimed green belt on the fence line, behind a hedge, but just tall enough that if workers at those businesses wanted to cause a fuss, they could. I wasn't bothering anyone, I was putting it up after 9pm and leaving at like 7am. No big deal, right?
THE FUCKING SHITHEAD ASSHOLE WORTHLESS PIECE OF SHIT SOULLESS FUCKWAD employees of the movie theater.. little shitstain uneducated teenage pieces of shit.. came over to my tent filming me through the mesh window and laughing at me. I don't think I've ever seen more red in my life than being woken up by them for their amusement and ridicule. When I confronted their manager the next day, I was shaking so hard with anger, embarrassment and frustration. It was fucking terrible. Fuck teenagers man. I've got 5 kids, I'm divorced, I'm on the last rung in life and you're going to fuck with me?
I got news for you. Karma is a BITCH. Those kids will know some serious pain for what they did.
That shouldn't be normal, fucking billionaires and their greed.
america really fell huh...
This is the future.
At least in jail you get a toilet
This is fake , I worked at a storage unit facility during the pandemic and they wouldn’t allow this at all lol
Surly this is a skit
I wonder if something like the Japanese "coffin hotel" model would work here, but on a more long-term rental basis.
On a new episode of 1000 ways to die
Scrubs the whole place with antibacterial wipes then kicks on a dirty ass fan with nasty chunks of dust in it.
Don't most storage place have a rule against that?
This has to be staged. I'm sure people do sleep in storage units but no way this guy does. Those were some premium jiblets on the Crocs
Makes sense
I saw a homeless gentleman clean his balls in a public water fountain a couple weeks back. I’ll tell you what. It changed my view of the universe that day.
He could have at least got one a little bigger
Maybe you should get a better job than circle k
Snowcrash the book predicted this.
Is it safe to use Clorox wipes bare handed?
Where are you pooping?
That is a tiny storage unit for 150. I have a 10x20 for 200$ in phoenix
