So yesterday i had a hair appointment that ran long so I was starving (am also breastfeeding so eating a ton as am feeding a whole other human!!) and went to a local casual sit down. I ordered two apps and a full meal special which included soup. As i was grubbing down I started to feel a little self conscious — like I knew i ordered a lot and yes i ate every damn bite! So to my question — when someone comes in alone to eat and eats a lot, do you judge? Pay attention? Not even notice? Super curious.
100%
You're not ever remembered unless you do something to BE remembered and ordering a lot isn't something that causes you to be remembered.
Typically being an asshole or a bad tipper or something negative is what creates the judgement, gossip to coworkers, and memory of the guest.
Exactly this, in the 3.5 years I worked at a golf club I only have one member I remember for a food order but that was just because the dude ordered 2 entrees for his Golden Retriever. Cooper was a friendly, and incredibly well fed golden and a pleasure to serve
That is an excellent reason to remember a person/order! Otherwise, can't imagine caring lol
I used to have a someone order kids meals for their pug and we’d make it without seasonings just for the lil guy.
I still remember the two super fun, super thick girls that showed up in their comfy clothes, high as hell, ordered than two entres and an app each, talked to me about how well things would reheat later, and tipped fat in cash. They were so nice to serve and I loved the relationship they had with eachother. Never saw them again though :(
Right?!? It’s like a conveyor belt of thoughts, they just keep moving along till they drop off the end.
Exactly. There will probably be a brief comment back in the dish pit to the effect of "Did you see the woman at table 23? She ate a burger, a dozen wings, a full caesar salad, a bowl of soup, and a full charcuterie board!" But that will be forgotten within a minute or two.
Yes, we gossip about customers because it's often the only way to cope with the stress of service work. In a typical shift, I tend to serve around 100 people though, so the chances of me remembering anything about anyone in particular are resoundingly low. Unless you're the greatest or worst customer I've had in months, I can assure you, I don't care much about you as long as you're happy with your meal, pay your bill, and tip decent
100 people? You making 600 a day at least?
probably 100 people total so if tables of 2/4s its 50-25 tables. Hopefully they make good money though lol
Yeah, I gotta be honest, I’m more judging if you order shit that doesn’t pair well together than anything and even then it’s more like “sometimes you’re just craving X, Y, and Z, whatever floats your boat. I’m just worried they won’t like all of that together” than actual judgment.
Lol. I will never forget this lady that told me she wanted to wait to see what she's eating to order a drink. I'm thinking "oh, nice. Somebody who knows how to pair food with wine. Sweet". She ordered Tenderloin Bearnaise...then proceeded to order a strawberry daiquiri
I mean, that is a red lmao.
Watching Endeavor. Character's wife makes him a cheese and pickle sandwich once a week. Spose and I look at each other: "Hmmm...maybe. What kind of cheese? What kind of pickle?"
Cheddar and Branston pickle, usually.
LOL! Same here! Not a server, but a part-time volunteer bartender and budding foodie. You hear about those sandwiches often on British shows and in books. I kinda got addicted to 'em (the shows AND the sammies). It wants good cheddar and works well with a good sweet gherkin. Yum! Oh, and a pint of best bitter, please.
And quickly, please, the world's about to end.
Thanks. We will try them. I prefer British, Scottish, Irish, Australian and New Zealand TV. Just so tired of most American TV. I have to use closed captioning, but I really don't care!
My husband's asleep. I woke him up cackling at this!!
Yup. I had a guy put seaweed salad on his Rueben today.
I'm not sure if this is brilliant or completely unhinged
Let him cook, literally. Throw some char grilled hot peppers on there, nothing too spicy, a bit of sweetness too, but helps cut out into the saltiness and general “seafood umami” seaweed has. I love doing cuisine cross overs and this one has a ton of potential.
Totally agree! Seaweed can be so versatile in a dish if it's prepared and seasoned well.
Lmaoooo this is a good answer. Someone could eat a baby in front of me and I'd still just be like "damn I hope they tip well."
True. I will judge you and then forget your existence thirty seconds later unless you do something awful or amazing. Remember, most of us are American, so it's not entirely unusual to witness someone eating more than should be humanly possible.
That was accurately put!
Honestly I'm more impressed than judgemental if someone is able to put away a good amount of food. I work at an upscale seafood restaurant and watched one lady absolutely annihilate a 5lb lobster with sides by herself. I went to ask her if she wanted a box only to realize she had eaten the whole damn thing and there was not a piece of meat to be found. I was in awe and everytime I think of her I feel respect lol. I love when people order a lot and end up cleaning their plates. I want people to eat good when they are dining with me. Order as much as you want, eat as much as you want, oh and order some desserts too. Live your life with a full belly.
When I first met my husband's friends we all went out to eat and I ordered 20 wings. I worked out beforehand and was starving. They were shocked I ate all 20. I was like why would I order 20 wings if I didn't want 20 wings....like women arnt suppose to eat when hungry lol
Recently I went to a good Chinese buffet. One of the many things they offer is steamed crawfish. At the table next me, an individual ate, I dunno… I hesitate to guess, but based on the 6 hugely mounded plates of crawfish shells, I guess like at least 200? And when I say 6 plates that was what I noticed, there may have been more. I was very much impressed, in awe, and grossed out at the same time. 😂
They made sure to get every single cent's worth of that buffet price lmao. I respect it
There is a place near me that does a brunch buffet that has crab legs. So I treat is as all you can eat crab legs for 32 bucks. Not even sure what else they serve...
Those 200 crawfish yielded approximately 3 ounces of tail meat
You have to suck the heads! So 4 oz.
My son and I still bring up “Mongolian bbq dude” once or twice a year. We were in line behind him and were incredibly impressed, and a little repulsed, at his stacking skills. The food in his bowl was more than 3 times the height of the bowl, and almost as wide all the way to the tippy top. That said, I wouldn’t have recognized him if I’d seen him the next day somewhere else.
One place I used to work was the olive garden and whenever I'd see people order the Tour of Italy I'd low key get excited when they finished the whole thing. It's physically impressive and I don't have to bother boxing up the food so it's a win win in my eyes.
How big is the portion on that?
I just looked out of curiosity. It’s 1,550 calories, not including drink, bread, and soup or salad.
It's a serving of lasagna, a Chicken Parm, and a portion of fettuccine Alfredo. It comes out on a big goofy platter and also includes breadsticks and either a soup or salad. It's A LOT of food.
People ask if we have the tour of Italy at my work all the time! I don’t even work at Olive Garden but I get asked that like twice a year anyway.
At least now I know what that consists of so I can tell them we can put those three things together if they wanna pay like $40.
I’m really thin but generally eat once a day. I remember many times, even as a kid, when servers were impressed by how much I ate. A chef even came out “to see the skinny girl who ate all that” once.
I was seven and won a $100 bet my mother made with a friend of hers that I could eat the entire lb of spaghetti she’d made after a discussion of this. I got the free steak at one of those places where it’s free if you can eat the entire thing, as a teen.
I’m more mindful and moderate these days. Mostly.
You'd like BeardMeatsFood on YouTube.
My tables sometimes will be like “oh we ordered so much food! We’re so hungry” and I tell them my table is a judgement free zone. And I mean it. I will never ever judge someone for how much they want to eat. Food is delicious, it literally fuels our bodies. There’s too much body focus in the world anyway.
Now, if you’re an asshole, I’ll judge ya 🤣
I literally went to Texas Roadhouse today and ordered a 16oz sirloin, loaded baked potato, and corn. My boyfriend ordered a loaded fry and we split the cactus blossom.
To be fair, I ordered a lot and only ate about half of what I got because it’s my only way of getting lunch tomorrow unless I want to go out (empty fridge lol). Either way, I don’t care if the server looked at me weird for ordering way more than my boyfriend. Imma eat what I want when I want.
Totally get this. I always order something that will give me leftovers for the next meal, but if it turns out I’m hungry enough to finish it at once best believe I will!
Oh yeah! I’ll eat as much as I can when I go out because it’s not too common. But always try and order more. I’m not much of a cook and my work schedule is weird and so is my boyfriends so if he’s not here for lunch it’s either leftovers, a sandwich, or going out LOL.
We notice you eat a lot, but also note that means you have a higher bill and (hopefully) higher tips. We love you
This
Oh no we love it. This buff dude would come in and eat two full burgers regularly and we thought it was amazing.
I think that's the truth. If I judge, it's to think it's kind of awesome they can pack it away like that.
I had a guy this winter with his wife and kid, he got the sizable calamari app, the 16oz Ribeye AND the 14oz NY strip for himself, cleaned off all three. Super fit dude, I talked to him cause it was remarkable, and he said he intermittent fasts and eats one huge meal a day, I was highly impressed.
I’ve been doing IF on and off for a while, and I can never put it away like I used to. I have to eat a series of small meals during my eat time because I get full so fast.
I wish I could just fill right up like this guy. Be done.
It does worry me sometimes though because I've had tables that order a fuck ton of food and then tip me really bad....
And side note, because I serve I've actually learned that people are way less judgemental than you think they are. If a server did actually judge you for that they gotta grow up.
idc but i do start judging if you’re on your 7th diet coke refill, and 4th basket of bread.
For real. I don't care how much you eat but if I have to refill your diet coke 5 times before the appetizer comes out please just get some water because you must be dehydrated.
They are dehydrated. It’s because they don’t “like water.” They walk around chronically dehydrated until they can chug something sweet.
That's me! I don't like water, but will drink it when I have to. Otherwise I drink a toooon of sweet tea. Or regular tea. I'll drink soda as well. But water rarely.
But even at my age of I'm outside and thirsty af, I'll drink water strait out of the water hose. (Best tasting water imo)
Are you saying that you still find hose water gross because it’s water but you drink it because it is the least gross water to you? If so, how did you arrive at the belief that it is different water from your tap?
Yes. All water to me has a weird mineral taste to it. But oddly enough tap and hose water taste less mineral like.
Also as soon as I drink water I have to drink something sweet. Doesn't have to be soda, could be orange juice or aloe juice. Just something with a little sweetness to it to knock back the sugar craving
Interesting, thanks for explaining. Yikes.
Of course, please ignore this if not helpful, but I’m mentioning this just in case anyone else finds it helpful….This craving for constant sweetness can be an indicator of too little carbohydrate consumption throughout the day. (Registered Dietitian here.) Carbs are our our bodies’ preferred fuel source. When we restrict (unintentionally or intentionally), we will crave carbohydrates in many forms, including sweetened beverages especially if we’re also dehydrated.
Of course, this could also be a strong sensitivity to the mineral taste making you want anything else to remove the mineral taste. Sweets are good at that. I use a smoothie instead of water if I’m going to drink protein powder because it hides it way better.
I used to call those people coke heads. Its good for a big laugh but sometimes I’d get that “is it that obvious?” look and I’d say something like “whoa, I’m just talking about your soda” and then there would be some nervous laughter
if i have to bring a refill right after i come back after dropping the drinks off, im bringing two full glasses next trip maybe they’ll catch a bit of shame for chugging it.
What is with the diet coke people? They always get a zillion refills I don't understand why lol
the methadone of soft drinks
Because caffeine is a stimulant and aspartame, the artificial sweetener in diet coke is hard on the kidneys. Your body will pull as much hydration as it can to help restabilize your kidneys and bladder. Of course because they chug diet coke all day none of them.ever actually get to the part where they aren't dehydrated.
The amount of times in my life I’ve said “more diet?” Is disgusting
i dont get it honestly. i always feel like its definitely the one that gets the most refills. maybe its the diet marketing part of it psychologically, or maybe i just have selective memory.
They’re thirsty and they like the taste. Plus no calories.
Which, in their minds, offsets the 8-scoop sundae with all the toppings.
It dehydrates you. Something about the sweetener, I don't know the science.
It’s the caffeine
The diuretic effect of caffeine is really minimal.
I feel attacked. I'm a thirsty guy and I love bread :(
If you're thirsty, drink water. All of the nicer things to drink, like soda, beer, coffee or tea work worse to hydrate you, and will leave you dehydrated, and thus thirsty, for longer. Get a coke and a water. Chug the water, sip the coke.. Let your server know that's what you're gonna do. Good chance you'll get a pitcher the first time you ask for a water refill.
I'm with you on bread! But I dislike overeating, so I'll almost never ask for extra because I'm sure I'm gonna like my ap, entree and dessert too!
7th before the food even comes out
If they do, that's their problem. Do what you need to do. Eat what you want to eat.
Servers judge you on how well you tip, not how much you eat. :)
I bought someone 3 desserts because they ate a 40 oz porterhouse
I mean, I eat a lot. I'm a skinny lady but I pack it in.
I'd say: I notice and respect.
Its a spectrum. Anyone can be a server if they can do the job, which means there are really nice servers, and really judgemental servers.
In my experience though, i typically impress people when i order a lot.
I got two entrees at a restaurant (im 25f, not slim as i used to be but not particularly big either). The food runner passed by my table with my second entree, saw i was already eating, and said "this isnt for you? Is it?" And me, i took that as a challenge. "It certainly is," i said. He looked impressed.
I finished my entire meal, and then my entire second meal. My server was impressed. The person who cashed me out was impressed. Did my stomach hurt? Yes. Was it worth the look of awe on their faces? Certainly.
As a server, im always happy when people order more than the average person. It just means they really like our food.
As a fat woman I’ve gotten super self-conscious about eating in front of others to the point that I’ll skip meals (“put it off” until such a time as I can eat privately which more often than not means the meal just doesn’t happen,) and between medication and food issues it turns out I’m not feeling hunger cues as I should and I’m somewhat chronically malnourished (AND fat! Turns out “calories in, calories out” is some basic-ass bullllllSHIT because I’ve been lowkey starving my body for years without intending to and not losing a bit of weight anyhow,) so I’m working with a dietician and trying to focus on enjoying food and eating well even when I’m in public.
I tip well, mind my business, and enjoy my eats as best I can!
I certainly don't judge if you are larger and eating a lot. It's not my fucking business, it's your life and it sucks that you have felt self conscious. Be happy, that's what matters and my only goal when serving
Nah go nuts. As the saying goes, the ones who mind dont matter and those who matter wont mind!
First of all I have never had the time to stop and think about what/how much someone is eating, and secondly (and most importantly), I just don’t give a shit.
I don't know any of us who do where I work. It's a mid level chain with a salad bar, which is important to the following example. Lol
We do,.however, notice when someone makes like eight salads at the salad bar but only nibbles a bite or two of each. It's so wasteful!
But the person who ate all eight plates? We're probably more impressed than judgy.
Especially if you still put down an entree after that.
If you do something memorable, maybe we remember you but hopefully in a good way, like the dope family who made my night by giving me ice cream cake on top of their generous tips for their 17 person birthday dinner, or the college age guy who ordered our (admittedly) giant double cheeseburger and then couldn't figure out how to unhinge his jaw to eat it.
People working customer service jobs have seen weirder, and honestly don't really see customers as people. It's not meant to sound disrespectful or dehumanizing, but if you see 100+ people per day, they all kind of blend together.
In the moment, yes, someone somewhere might make a comment, but it's more to find levity during a grueling shift than an actual reflection of that person.
If you were polite and left a tip (if you're in a country that does that), your server will full on forget how much you ate.
You're totally fine.
Judge you? No. I might remember you if you eat a memorable amount of food. Like I remember a kid in his early teens coming in for all you can eat pancakes one morning and putting down like 20, but normally I don't give it anymore thought than making sure it all gets to the table.
Teenage boys seem to INHALE food. I was serving a family with two teenaged boys and they both had finished and ordered a second entree in the time that it took mom and dad to get a quarter of the way through their food.
They didn't leave a single bite behind lmao
Not in any negative sense — we exist to feed you
I would high five you as long as you had good table manners and tipped well.
Most of us judge you, but in a positive way. If you eat a lot, you are enjoying the food and are likely to come back thumbs up
I’m not a server but I think the only way they would notice is if you ordered a crap ton of food and then didn’t eat it just leaving it there to collect all the flies.
That's the sort of stuff I notice. I was raised on the premise of "take all you want, but eat all you take" - AKA the only way I'm going to judge you is if you order large and waste half of it. If you take it with you, cool that's great. If you leave it behind as trash... Im judging you just a tiny bit in the back of my mind. Needless waste has always bothered me and always will. I know too many people struggling to afford PB&J, I have no desire to throw away $17 worth of food that you ordered and didn't finish.
Its different if you order one regular entree and it's just more than you can handle, thats perfectly fine. 3 Apps and 2 entrees where you leave half of everything there? Judging.
Nope! I always figure that they must be hungry. I usually recommend an appetizer if they seem ravenous, so that they can munch on something before their meal as our apps generally take a shorter amount of time to make. I think that most people have been hungry at some point, so I'm always understanding, and honestly pretty impressed if a customer can pack a lot away.
The only time judgement has ever come into play about food is when a regular of mine, who has health concerns and is NOT supposed to eat certain foods, orders it anyways. But it's not a cruel judgement. It's a honest concern that he'll wind up back in the hospital. As someone who used to have severe health issues that landed me in the hospital because my body couldn't digest certain foods (wound up having surgery because it caused multi organ failure before I knew what the issue was, just knew there was a lot of pain!), I am honestly concerned about his health. He has disclosed these issues to me, and I know him well enough to mother hen him, so I tend to check up on him before putting his order into the system. He's voiced in the past that he appreciates me looking out for him, so I don't feel bad for putting my hands on my hips, cocking an eyebrow, tapping my foot, and saying something like "and is this food going to hurt you today, (FULL CUSTOMER NAME)?" 🤣 he always chuckles and ends up telling me it's a good day, or changing his order while grumbling about the stupid disease and then thanking me.
So in short, no, you are good to go when ordering a lot. If a server ever makes a cruel comment about the amount of food you ordered, quietly report them to management. It's unacceptable, and no one deserves to be judged over how much they order.
This is so sweet. Good work miss fay!
I always judged people who eat a lot in the most positive way. I always saw them as the elite diners who seek the best experience.
No one cares, live your life
No idc what you eat but those 4 fucking dr peppers before your meal arrives people I will judge the ever living shit out of. Like I could just throw two entire bags of sugar at you instead, and it sounds more fun than adding you drinking sodas like they are water to my ever growing list of things I already have to worry about.
I LOVE people who order a lot and actually eat it. Enjoy your fuckin life 💚
Girlfriend, if you had told me you were breastfeeding, I would have gotten you everything you ordered, and everything free I could swing! When I was bf'ing, I was hungry all the time. I was always saying, "How do cows doooooo this? They have to chew their food twice, and I'm falling behind barely chewing mine as I shovel it in!"
I feel seen!!!!
Impressed, sometimes, and happy for the larger bill.
I still talk with admiration about the small woman who ate a 40 oz Tomahawk with sides by herself.
I think the only time I've ever remotely judged a guest based on the amount of food they ate was when I worked at olive garden. Specifically during never-ending pasta bowl. Which is a special kind of hell unto itself.
You can buy a pasta pass, which means you get it free. FREE
One guy ate the original already large bowl, complete with alfredo and sausage. He ordered NINE MORE. with all the fixins. He even got more soup refills.
He ate EVERY. SINGLE. BITE.
I went through a range of emotions. Disgust. Horror. Disbelief. Awe.
It was so impressive. I often think of him. I hope he's doing well.
I'm fine thanks
Tbh as a server I judge very little. The only times I judge ppl r when I can tell they're difficult ppl in real life, or if they treat me as a lesser person than them. As far as ordering a bunch of food goes....eat all you want all I see are dollar signs and I'll pack up anything u cant finish lol
I honestly think it's impressive. I work at a place known for their ribs. One time I had a dude who demolished a whole pound of ribs with a huge baked potato and promptly reordered the same thing and did it again. That guy was a legend.
Literally nobody gives a fuck. And that’s a great thing.
I can honestly say I don’t judge people for eating a lot, not even subconsciously. Even when I was a younger server and a more judgmental person, I still never really cared. We make good food, people are here to eat that good food, and the people have money to spend, end of story. Drinks on the other hand, I’ll judge the fuck outta you. I can say with certainty your body wants a glass of water, NOT a 5th Diet Coke.
There is nothing better than busing a table with empty plates. I don’t judge at all!
I once saw a person eat a hamburger that was actually bigger than my head. I was in awe.
No problem, you just do you.
I love it when single people eat a ton of food because I also want to try everything and want to order like 4 things for myself anytime I go out to eat.
If I were your server my first thought would be “this woman deserves this.” Because I would assume you had a family that never lets you eat first or fully.
Depends on the context really. I had a very overweight man come in last week and order 3 chicken sandwiches. Our sandwiches are pretty substantial. He sat and ate all 3. I judged him a little, mostly because that man is going to have a heart attack. Maybe he’s depressed and binge eating. I don’t know. But he was HUGE, and his eating habits are the cause.
I’d judge people more for not eating much of their food (and not having an issue with the food or wanting a to go box), I have a friend that always picks really expensive places to eat and never eats more than like 2 bites of her food and I’m like why are we even here
I'm sometimes that friend because the second I get home I rip into that food like a feral animal, without having to wear pants
Lol I’m known at a certain pub for being ‘the super petite chick who can demolish an entire monster burrito’. Lol it’s this small joint at a resort beach location that I hit up maybe once every 4-6 months over the past few years. I always go midday after doing a 5 mile walk down the shore and happen to be waited on by the same bartender each time. Apparently she’s mentioned me to her coworkers before because she insisted grabbing one of them to meet me to show that I was a real person and I did, in fact finish the entire burrito 😅
My mom waitresses for years, and she loves good eaters. To her, it is impressive and complimentary to so clearly enjoy the meal you are served!
I love it when guests eat a lot of food! Enjoy your damn self, eat up, get your fill, etc. It makes me happy when folks enjoy food and are satisfied by it.
Wayyyyyy more enjoyable to serve than folks who are restrictive or rigid or restrained in their portions.
I genuinely enjoy 1 tops who order half the menu. They usually don’t need a ton of attention, it’s way easier to communicate with them than a table all talking to each other, and the bill is still in range with my other tables so I don’t lose money. Please don’t feel weird about doing this, a lot of other servers feel the same way I do! We don’t care what you want to eat, one of my old regulars would order 2 dinners and eat one as an app and he was someone I looked forward to serving
The only single diner I’ve ever hated was the weird German guy who would demand to have me and noone else serve him every Thursday. He’d drink one beer and have our cheapest appetizer but he was so needy and annoying, like how much of my time do you really need for a snack. He wasn’t spending enough money to excuse him grabbing me from my other tables to mansplain stupid random facts every couple minutes, and he tipped like shit
Servers judge everyone. Don't sweat it and enjoy the meal.
We pay WAY more attention to how you treat us than what you actually eat. Sure, we may be surprised when someone can eat a lot but it's not beyond a "wow" and moving on
Lol i was “wow”ing myself too so I guess we are in it together. Thanks!
I only judge if you order a ton of food and DON'T eat it. I hate scraping a whole plate of food into the trash. If I think I'm gonna have to do that and then find out you actually ate all the food, I will be pleased and impressed!
As long as you tipped at least 20%, nobody cared what you ate.
Dont even notice
I personally do not care. It makes your bill higher which makes my tip higher. I might be surprised if anything.
No
Do you judge people by whether they eat some very healthy or very greasy? How about their weight?
No. You do you. It's your body and your meal and I don't judge.
I don't judge people who eat a lot. I judge people who order a lot and pick out specific things.
Example : I used to work at a place where you could literally add any ingredient in our menu to the mac n chz. This kid ordered one with lobster, pulled pork, bacon, ham, sausage, ground beef, steak, and our Cajun chicken breast. He spent 50 dollars on a plate of mac n chz and only sure the steak, lobster and bacon out of it.
I’ve never done it. I’ve had my days when I order for three and it’s just me. I would never dare to judge others for what they eat. With exception to the people who order a dish know the ingredients, then proceed to mod everything about it it’s not even close to what’s on the menu. I hate mods. But order what you want boo. You do you.
Nobody cares and more importantly, you do whatever you need to do to take care of yourself and feed that baby.
I might be like, wow, they were hungry. That’s about it. Stuff only sticks out in my mind like I once had this couple come in and they ordered salads with nothing on it but literally a cup of ranch, each. Then their main meal was our BLT pizza (which has a ranch base), but they wanted NO lettuce or tomato. They wanted extra ranch on the pizza, and on the side. I swear to god this couple each downed like a pitcher size of ranch each with all the extra ranch they ordered. I’ll never forget that…🤣
As a server I actually love when people grub. And finish their plates. Especially elderly people idk why.
I don’t care, personally.
I care about having nice table manners, but that’s it. Who cares what other people think?
And why would a server care - unless you have awful manners and make them miserable, they would just be happy about the bigger bill and bigger tip! 😛
We don’t! Actually, if anything, sometimes we’re impressed. Especially if it’s someone that doesn’t look like they could eat a bunch of food. We definitely talk about it, though!
The only time I judge is when they order a bunch of food and then have it thrown away. It’s such a waste.
Do you know how much servers eat? Lol.
We have to eat a fuck ton considering all the calories we burn working.
I had a dude come in and order 6 burgers and a milkshake. Our burgers are huge btw I can only eat half of one. I will certainly remember him but I probably wouldn’t even recognize him if I saw him out in public. He ended up tipping me like $40. Which was way over 20%, I don’t remember the total. I didn’t give a single shit piss or fuck that he ate that much lol.
Absolutely not. Rack up that tab lol, eat your heart out... I'd be impressed more than anything and that's if I noticed.
I don’t remember a single thing anyone has ever ordered from me. Only how they treated me and others. Order 5 mains and all I think is I hope they tips 20%.
Unless you're a huge asshole or a regular, I wouldn't remember or judge you. We were so busy that I basically went on auto pilot. Besides that, I wouldn't judge anyway since I don't know you and it ultimately is none of my business. I'm sure in the years I waited tables that someone ordered a large amount of food, but I have no memory of it. I say don't worry about it, and I hope you enjoyed every bite!
Probably they judged what you ate in terms of 'oh that chick on 52 ordered my fave apps, glad she didn't complain, she picked a weird side with her main though I like that entree better with the potatoes...' for ten or fifteen seconds before your order was replaced by the next persons.
I don’t judge anyone for what they order, whether it’s a lot or a little! I’m just making sure you have a great experience.
I personally have mental health stuff (my meds make my appetite weird, also I have an IUD so when I think I’m supposed to be getting my period it’s so weird) and sometimes I won’t eat for two days, and other times I can’t get enough food. I’ve been the person who orders an appetizer and barely touches it, and I’ve been the person who’s down to share two appetizers with a friend and also get my own lunch/dinner and I’ll want more food after. So I’m definitely not going to judge anyone for whatever they want to eat.
You do you baby!
If you eat actual food as it is prepared, I don't care. You could order 5 apps, ask for more bread, then eat your entree and follow up with a dessert. I wouldn't bat a eye.
If you drink 20 sodas though, I'm judging you.
If you order a soup bowl of our house made sauce and you basically drink it, I'm doubly judging you.
Pre-bussing is basically mandatory at my restaurant. It is my responsibility as the server to take all or at least most of the dishes off the table. It’s a relief to stack empty dishes vs slime all the leftover food together when I try to take everything back. 😂
Also, our boxes are Chinese kari-out boxes (I work in a Chinese restaurant of course) it really grinds my gears when I bring a 26 oz that can 100% hold all the food on that plate. “OMG THATS TOO SMALL. GIVE ME ONE WITH A LID PLEASE” sigh okay. I’ll just waste the restaurant’s money so your 4 pieces of general tso’s can fit in there like a lay’s bag of chips while management gives me the side eye.
My main concern is if you are content at your table. I’m not judging you in any way shape or form unless you’re rude or being difficult. And even if you’re difficult, I’m not going to bad mouth you to others unless the behaviors and attitude warrants it. Eat whatever you want!
I once went to a semi nice sit down Chinese restaurant and literally midway through ordering the lady goes "that's enough food"
I felt quite judged.
I like to eat.
But also, don't you want my money??? I was still going to order like 5 more dishes. Anything not eaten would come home with me, I'm no waster.
What I will not judge you for: Ordering a lot. Eating a lot.
What I will judge you for: Throwing half of your food in the trash instead of taking it with you when you couldn't finish. Ordering gluten free burgers. Ordering the wings. Ordering a single deep fried chicken filet as an extra in your otherwise cold, quick-to-make salad. Ordering shredded cucumber in your pasta and wanting it go through the oven.
Nah I think it’s impressive when people can eat a pot and the bill is higher. Usually they’re nice and easy going customers too. It’s always the ones that don’t eat a lot that are cheap and needy
I only would raise an eyebrow about people who wanted 3x the mayo or salad dressing and acted like we were skimping.
So i think i got it: eat well, tip great and don’t ask for Diet Coke refills! ;)
You guys have some amazing stories. Thanks all for sharing!!!
Depends on how much. If you come in and order food for a family of 4 people…by yourself (yes this happened to me) and eat it all by yourself then yeah. He ate 4 double quarter pound burgers, fries and drinks. But got 4 of everything, drinks too.
Still has me scratching my head.
i like when people spend more because it brings up my tips, and i LOVE when people finish everything on their plate because it makes bussing so much easier, you don’t waste food, and you don’t ask me for a box that just ends up getting left on the table. it also means that you liked the meal (presumably), which i’m always happy to see because i want people to come out and have a nice meal! if you order & finish a Huge amount i may be like… impressed lmao but i wouldn’t have any reason to judge
Servers judge everyone but the question is do you really give a rodent’s rump what someone bringing you food in a restaurant thinks of you.
I’ll only judge you if you order a bunch of shit and then only eat a few bites and ask me to box it up. If you cleaned your plates, I love you let’s be friends
Can't really do it anymore, but in my teens and twenties it wasn't unusual for me, and even a couple of my buddies, to order 2 complete breakfasts when we went out for breakfast. And I'm talking ordering a ham and cheese omelette with toast, hash browns etc along with a tall stack on f pancakes with sausage. As a teenager I barely broke 100 pounds, and in my twenties the heaviest I had been was 150 to 175. As a teenager I had a 28 inch waist. In my twenties I only got up to 34 inch waist. When some of the girls I graduated with found out I regularly ate that way the week of graduation when a bunch of us went for breakfast the first day of graduation rehearsal, they said they hated me because I ate that much with out gaining weight, and they felt they had gained 5 pounds just watching me eat. The only thing ever said to one buddy and myself when we were out one morning was the server was moving us from a 2 person booth to a 4 seat booth so she could fit all the food. In general the servers etal don't care as long as you pay for what you get.
Server here!!
Nope.
Not at all. I had a table of two order a full rack of ribs with two sides, two of the largest steaks with 4 more sides (2 each dish), a salad to share, and an appetizer.
I do judge you on how you like your steak cooked though (looking at you well done folks)
Rare or Medium Rare are the only valid choices
Nah I just judge people for judging ppl no playing favorites here 🫡
Does anyone have a link to a sub where customers can ask for servers' opinions instead of posting their questions to servers in a sub designated for servers to tell their own stories?
How about. If your are a pretty heavy woman and can't eat half a plate and don't want to take the rest home?
How much do you weigh?
not judging whatsoever but figured i’d let you know. “feeding for two” is a complete misconception. it only takes an additional 200 calories to meet your child’s needs when pregnant and breastfeeding which is essentially a granola bar.
Please don’t do that — don’t be the person to tell a breastfeeding woman about her needs. I know what my body needs to feed my kid and it’s around 1k more calories than my non breastfeeding intake. For the record I’m 135 lbs and 9.5 months post partum. My weight calculator says I need 600 calories for my child’s milk and I also donate 30 oz per day for another child, have done so for 8 months.
The more you order, the more you spend, the more you feel obligated to leave in tips! It’s all cool!
nah most we do is talk about it to co-workers but most of us too busy to truly care
You’re judged by how you treat staff, how you treat the establishment, and how well you tip. The more you eat, the more your tip should be (theoretically) so if they have any negative thoughts about the amount you eat, they will sure as hell keep it to themselves.
If they do, so what? You didn't do anything wrong; if anything, you brought in more money and possibly a bigger tip. That's good for their business.
As long as you can't tell they judged you, let it go. Also, we tend to overestimate how much other people pay attention to us. Your server most likely was focused on you a lot less than you were focused on you.
Maybe for new servers that haven’t experienced it yet, but unless you’re Homer Simpson at the all you can eat seafood buffet, I would barely notice and definitely not care.
In my section, You're in a judgment free zone! I just appreciate when somebody can treat themselves and enjoy themselves. You do you! As long as you're kind, your server should not judge you.
Not a server, but I have a lot of friends that are. The consensus among them is that they remember people for either being assholes, or tipping above and beyond. Eating challenges were the only thing that made them remember how much anyone ate.
When I was younger, I was a bit self-conscious about pulling up to a drive-through window to get dinner with a cup in the console left from where I'd gotten lunch at a different restaurant. It felt a bit like I was being disloyal, or cheating on them.
After I got a bit older and had a few jobs behind me, I realized that the person working the window at the drive-through likely won't even notice the cup, and if they do the most thought they might put into it would be to get a craving for the food at the other restaurant.
Servers are doing a job, and one that most of them do purely for the paycheck rather than for the enjoyment of it. Interaction with customers is mostly a performance, and few servers will remember you 10 minutes after you walk out the door unless you do something obnoxious to make yourself memorable. Eating two apps with your meal isn't really that far outside the norm when you consider that the entire reason you walked in was to eat. Maybe if you ate multiple full entrees by yourself and then didn't leave a tip your server would have some nasty things to say about you, but they wouldn't be about you overeating.
No, but I do judge those who run me for 4 or 5 pop refills in a 30 minute or so span.
I always judged people who took up time in my booth not eating food at all, rather than the ones who actually order.
Tbh I like having something to do so asking for refills or ordering a bunch of shit is all good in my book.
Also, unless you order like 3 entrees for yourself (which yes I have had someone do) I'm probably not even gonna notice.
And if I do, it's only cause I wanna make sure you won't be upset with the bill when it's all rang up later after ordering multiple entrees. You won't believe how many people are somehow shocked to see their own bill after they're the ones who ordered everything.
Only if you don't finish it. I don't like waste.
2 appetisers and a meal with soup? That’s not even a lot. If you’d come and ordered 5 appetisers 2 mains and a couple desserts and smashed the lot… but even then I wouldn’t judge. I’d just be like dammmmmn girl can eat
I work at a sushi place and I think it’s pretty normal when people order a lot there. Then again, it IS sushi and doesn’t really fill you up, but when it does my god you feel it. And then you’ll be hungry again in the next hour or so 😅
No. It's none of my business, my business is to make you happy.
As a server I do not give a fuck, eat, don’t eat, just don’t treat me poorly and you can do whatever you want lol
This thread is so wholesome lol
Girl if you're fuckin hungry, fuckin eat.
Why would I? That means I’ll likely make more money
I personally never judge!! There are days that I too am a bottomless pit and over the course of my shift will consume like a fat waffle, a fatter breakfast sandwich, a chocolate chip cookie, a smoothie … ya gotta eat :)
I used to be known by the bartender at the place by my school as the person who came in and ate 5 apps by themselves then sipped 8 beers with all of it. I would leave a 30% tip and that bartender looooooooooved me.
Eat all you want. Tip well.
Nah. Get it. Got a regular who has two dinners every time he comes in, twice a week. Fit ish. In better shape than me at least. I guess it’s his cheat day and a high calorie day schedule. I appreciate his company and he tips well.
I’m a male server. Idk if that makes a difference.
To add to the whole, I’m a dude thing, when a woman comes in solo, and can smash a meal, I wanna talk to her more. That’s a level of confidence I can’t deny being attracted to.
So the only time I’ve ever “judged” someone for eating a ton (quotes, because I was honestly kind of impressed, and also not entirely surprised) was when this body builder came in to my small plates restaurant and ordered a 5 course meal (of small plates), then finished it off with a huge steak that serves 2.
Most people who came in alone would eat 3 plates on average, 4 if they had a pretty big appetite, or the steak alone would be enough to serve them. This guy basically ate two meals and then some (he was absolutely ripped though, so again, not super surprising). If anything I’m usually just jealous because I normally want 3-4 different things on the menu, but don’t have enough space in my tiny tummy to fit it all, and I don’t want to be wasteful.
You do you momma, I doubt the waitstaff is thinking twice about it, honestly lol
I personally love when people order more than what would be considered normal. Means more money for me 🤑
I care more about check averages than the actual items
When I served I didn’t even really think about how much people were eating. I had my own stuff going on so I just zoned into work mode
I served for 10 years. I remember the guy that spit on me, not the lady who ate a lot.
I judge you more if you dont finish your plate
as an ex waffle house server.... no. I might think "Jesus they must be starving" or something similar, but unless you leave a mess or are incredibly rude, you are likely forgotten 2 minutes after you leave my sight.
unless you make it a habit and become a regular who ALWAYS gets the same massive amount of food. but at that point, I probably asked wtf and we've made conversation about it.
I never judged when I was waiting tables. If I noticed I might be impressed they could eat that much as a passing thought. But generally speaking, what people ordered stopped mattering to me after I brought it to their table. Unless I was hungry and it sounded good. When I watched my tables it was mostly to check for signs that they needed something or to see if they had plates that were ready to be cleared.
I love seeing customers enjoy food and eat a lot. You do you! As long as you’re nice I am just stoked you’re there
I once got complimented by my server, aka the buffest guy I ever saw in person, for eating five apps and an entree.
I don't even give a damn lol. I doubt id even notice. I'm thinking about how I need to do sidework, and my boss is on my ass, I wouldn't even notice if you ate 3 entrees
Definitely not! In my experience, we're always either fascinated or impressed haha
What was your full order, out of curiosity?
I don’t judge, I’ll be more impressed tbh
Don’t care at all! I myself have been in your shoes
Servers exist in this weird limbo where you will be judged to the extent that someone who has zero care towards you beyond monetarily and human decency goes.
You may be a blip on the radar of "damn, this woman can pack it in". To just be forgotten in an hour.
