Just got a vive cosmos elite on the cheap and was wondering what people’s opinion of half life alyx is. Is it worth the price?
Still waiting and hoping for a title to even come close
Not PCVR sadly but RE4 remake/RE8 VR on PS5 is up there.
Haven’t played RE8 but I just don’t see how RE4 even comes close to HLA. It doesn’t even have physics… it barely takes advantage of what VR offers that flatscreen can’t, whereas HLA is ALL about taking advantage of VR
Oh absolutely this.
I tried playing this game.
I couldn’t.
It was too fucking realistic man.
All the RE remakes are indeed on PCVR with Praydogs mod. It works really well. Its not as interactive as Alyx obviously but controller support is well integrated and the games are super fun.
Check out Hitman, it started out as a mod for Alyx.
It looks and plays soo good.
Still in Early accses though.
Gunman contracts? Or is there one just called Hitman?
It's called : Gunman Contracts "Stand Alone"
No it's not Mr.47 :)
You can find it on steam, it uses the same engine as alyx.
If you load Alyx and go to mods , you can find 2 maps, from when it was just a concept.
They make your hart race , its gooood!
Lone echo
why is this getting down voted...
Because it’s not even close to Alyx
It was Alyx before Alyx was even an idea. The level of interaction is there, it has a complete story, graphics are great. Lone echo came out 3 years before half life : alyx and still looks/ plays extremely well.
Lone Echo 2 is kinda.. just okish compared to the first one?
Is top 3 worth it, yes
What are the other 2?
Walkabout minigolf
Relative and debatable
I haven't heard of these games. What genres are they?
Im playing formula 1 games on VR since 2022 ans im enjoying my life
Honestly it's the best single player game I've ever played, VR or not.
Yes. Alyx didn't set the standards. It is the standards.
I can't help but feel like setting the standards and being the standards is essentially the same thing?
The difference is that game has been out for four years and nothing has exceeded that standard yet.
Neither exceeded nor approached significantly...
The standard is teleporting up small ledges? huh.
Sounds like someone didnt change their locomotion settings and got all salty about it
Are you being intentionally deceitful about a part of the game or did you actually forget there are windows and ledges you actually just have to teleport up because you cannot walk/pull yourself up?
Had to teleport into a window. Unplayable. 0/10
Damn chill out fanboys, imagine getting so upset over pointing out a flaw in the game.
Damn chill out, imagine getting upset over pointing out the flaw in your logic.
Yes, the teleport first locomotion was a poor decision on the part of valve, but it does not ruin the game nor lower the bar of how good the game is in any meaningful way.
bro everyone is getting so mad like it's my favorite game i've ever played but still I absolutely agree with the "baby's first vr game" issue
Funny thing is i never said it was a bad game lol
tbh teleporting small ledges is ngl a really good move, valve knew this would be peoples first vr game (it came with the vive) so to combat motion sickness and helping players adapt to vr, it is a really good feature.
Shit take
Yes.
Just to emphasis to OP. YES
Yes - it will be on sale tomorrow
Aside from being great fun Vr game , You have Rhys Davies Darby of flight of the concords and our flag means death speaking in Ur ear a lot of the time.
Rhys Darby. Jonathan Rhys Davies was Gimli and Treebeard.
"Murray: Present."
It's super cool. Great experience. Voice characterisations are on point.
"Oh my god ****, are you okay? Pffft."
I just want to say sincerely.... Fuck ****. Never been so terrified playing a video game. Wasn't as bad on my second or third playthrough, first one was terrifying AF though
Going against the grain here. It’s a fantastic game. But it’s so much more of a horror game than the originals which is amplified in vr. I really don’t get on well with horror which meant me not finishing it. Technically and visually stunning tho
It's pretty cool and visually impressive. Definitely had some wow moments but I'm with you on the not being that into solo horror type games much. I have 7 hours on record before I stopped. At $60 I wouldn't buy it and definitely wait for a sale.
Actually its about a 12 hour game. That's pretty impressive for a single player VR games. I get bored of most single player games pretty easily though.
While I can see y’all’s point. As a non horror, especially in VR club member. I swallowed it and kept going. Wow man. Fantastic game. Exemplary VR mechanics.
Youre missing out on Jeff
Near enough when I stopped playing 😅
Yes, it's one of the best
one million times, YES!
seems like an odd question given the reviews. still after all this time its the only actually good vr game i have played. the rest are fun but all with flaws. HL alyx spoils us.
Personally I don't find the game fun and I would put this to everyone else who loves the game: What is really left of the game once you remove Russell talking in your ear the whole time?
Its just puzzle room, combine combat, puzzle room, repeat over and over again with the very rare dialogue that might progress the story a little.
I also feel like most of the "puzzle" rooms are just there to take up your time and be annoying obtuse, while other rooms are way too scripted which becomes really obvious if you reload the game and try to change something.
Its the most polished game available and it feels nice in VR, but other games can do everything way better then Alyx, just not all in the same game.
Honestly if you removed the Half Life branding and the voice acting due to it being a high budget game, I don't think this game would review that well.
"puzzle room, zombie fighting, puzzle room, gun fighting" is literally the entire Half-Life franchise in a sentence.
It had quirks, a few flat interactions, but as a standalone VR title if it wasn't associated with Valve, it would be a gem that got the right things really right.
...maybe aside from a case of "Alyx Shoulder".
Its a little different outside of VR because you can move quickly and run and gun.
Doing it in VR is very slow paced.
Try playing it in the garden with wireless VR in a 10m x 10m space.
And how can you not love the Jeff level?
IMHO it is really let down by the lack of a crowbar/melee combat and it is very linear. There is no real innovation, and minimal exploitation of VR's unique features (hence why it is technically playable flat).
Parts of the game are fun, but when you are fighting Combine forces, it feels more like VR is getting in the way than actually making the experience better. Highly restricted ammo + aiming a gun with your actual hands + enemies with infinite ammo that engage from a distance is a recipe for frustration.
I often get downvoted for having a very similar opinion as you. The game does a lot of VR stuff really well, but it feels like the game is just that VR stuff and not an actual Half-Life game. If someone wants Half-Life I'm VR, you can always play the Half-Life 2 VR mod, which is actually really great.
The point where I realized it wasn't for me was the first time a headcrab jumped at me and it felt like it was slowly floating through the air to give me plenty of time to shoot it.
The Half Life games frustrate me, because they sometimes look and feel like Immersive Sims, but fall short of fully committing and punish you if you try to play them like one. Really they are just regular 'ol shooters. When new weapons are introduced, it is assumed the player will want to use it, so ammo for prior weapons becomes scarce. Big disrespect for player agency. This can be mitigated somewhat by some kind of weapon with infinite ammo like the crowbar, but Alyx doesn't have that.
I just started playing it last night and was really disappointed when I picked up a metal pipe and couldn't hit the head crabs with it. Other than that though I have loved it so far.
Wait until you're fighting Combine who can inexplicably throw infinite man hacks at you...
low effort post/username checks out
Everything I do is low effort
i was going to disagree but now that i think about it i agree
Never payed for it lmao, It was decent but I much preferred boneworks.
The first 3 missions of half life alyx are unmatched as an introduction to VR. I got sick of the game before finishing it and uninstalled. I stop playing at the mission with all the spider things and power cells in an apartment block.
Yes. But be warned, it will ruin every other vr game after that. I've owned headsets since the original oculus 1 dev kit. I played Alyx on my valve index, was totally blown away and then sold my index less than a year later and haven't touched VR since.
Alyx suffers a bit from "motion sickness first gameplay second" mentality and a general lack of interactive environments, but makes up for that by otherwise delivering such a top tier experience that most people will gloss over those parts entirely.
It's a great early VR experience that will get you hooked on the medium and help you start gaining your VR legs. It excells in atmosphere and visuals. I think it's best to play early on before you've gotten so deep into VR that you notice all the things it's missing.
Its not a bad game but its not my favorite. Im just not crazy about half life in general. never have been. you should totally check it out during the summer sale.
As a huge Half Life and VR fan, I think Alyx is worth it but definitely overhyped.
Like usual with valve games it is incredibly well polished and the story is fun. It looks great and plays very smooth. My complaint is the combat is just shit by any standard. The combine enemies are comically oversized, they're bullet sponges all of a sudden, and they just stand in one spot while shooting/getting shot. The guns are also all pretty uninteresting. There's no melee for some reason.
It's a great VR experience that I think everyone should have, but in my opinion the HL2 VR mods are significantly more fun and feel like actual games
in my opinion the HL2 VR mods are..
Agree 100%.
I'll be down voted, but for me it feels too repetitive. All levels look similar and you "solve" the same puzzles over and over again. And there's no jumping - you teleport over gaps to higher and lower levels, etc.
Yes, it looks great with amazing performance - no other VR game is optimized as good as Alyx, there's tons of items you can pick up, throw, interact with. And yet, I enjoyed other VR games more.
Look at the pacing of Vertigo Remastered - it's not as complex, but it keeps you engaged and environments variety keeps it interesting throughout the entire game. And it introduces new mechanics in almost every level.
I even had longer sessions with Hubris than with Alyx. Hubris is definitely way worse game than Alyx, but I found the story more interesting, there's actual jumping, climbing (a shame that only on specific walls), physical swimming (by moving your hands in swimming motion), more variety in levels, and it's just satisfying to play. Too bad it's so short, it feels like the first episode in a longer game. This and junk - not everything is polished, it's annoying that you sometimes take out an item from your inventory during climbing or when hanging on a rope and moving along it. It could be way better.
There's also Robinson: The Journey. It's PSVR1 game ported to PCVR a long time ago, so requires some config files editing and custom binding (still not perfect, as controls were only for HTC Vive), but variety of environments, some physics based achievements and puzzles (it's on CryEngine), interesting story (although unraveled through collectable logs, but with full voice acting), pet dino you can command, scanning various animals (which adds entries to your "Pokedex", I mean journal). It just feels like an actual game, which would still be fun if it wasn't a VR game.
I play a wide variety of games in general since the 90s, and if I'd ask myself a question if Alyx would be fun if it wasn't a VR game, then the answer would be a definitive no for me. Is it fun in VR? It is, but gets boring fast. I was amazed at first how good this game was, but it became mundane after around 2 hours, and I still didn't finish it (8,5 hours of playtime so far), but I come back to it once in a while to progress further, because it was too expensive and too praised by other people not to finish it. I will, someday...
I'll die with you on that hill. I get how technically (as in it was well programmed) it's a good game. But I can't ride the hype train for the game, because as a person who was in VR since DK2, it reminded me of what I was tired of in VR shooters. Small spaces and more super dark horror-esque (especially the zombies) locations. All things that were overly represented in VR games.
Again not bad game. but as much as it's praised. I just feel like it didn't really push a lot forward, I can think of a lot of games that did similar things, just with a smaller budget. I'd rather play HL2, just because of the variety in gameplay and locations.
Yep, it's amazing in some ways but it just turns into a slog sooo quickly. The game isn't spectacularly long, takes just about 11-16 hours to play through. But when you look at the steam reviews, only half of them have actually played over 10 hours.
I've added the movement speed mod to try and get me through to the end. One of these days. When I can be bothered. Maybe.
I feel the same way, I just get so bored and I push myself through it for the voice acting and cutscenes.
Yes but not anywhere near as good as the VR mods for HL2. Alyx is slow, restrictive, but beautiful. HL2 seems like it was made for VR. Free mods!
Alyx has a bunch of mods too.
I strongly disagree. I think the slowness lends itself better to VR. Gives it more of a visceral feel, plus less motion sickness.
For real. Saying HL2 feels more like it was made for VR is a wild statement
I actually agree with everything /u/sickmoth said but I really think it boils down to Half Life 2 just straight-up being a way better game than Half-Life Alyx.
The VR mods for HL2 and Episodes make the games feel practically native for VR. Gunplay mechanics like sniping, grenades, and the RPG Launcher are actually elevated in VR.
The vehicle sections can be nauseating but the mod offers a lot of solutions built right in to mitigate that problem.
I don't get sick at all in and VR so alyx feels like moving thru sludge to me. I actually ended up increasing the movespeed to HL2 levels in console even tho it probably wasn't balanced around it because it just felt so slow vs most free locomotion VR games nowadays. It also sucks only being able to teleport to jump over gaps or crouch into windows. A lot of games that come out now shy away from being overly cautious in regards to player movement and imo the slow movespeed is a relic of early game VR kinda like forced vignettes when you sprint or even just move.
Yes
Yes
I would recommend BoneWorks over Half Life Alyx. But if you can get Alyx on sale I say go for it.

No. Everyone agrees its the worst vr game ever made. /s
im pretty sure on sale its like 50% off so no matter I think it is worth considering waiting on a sale, especially considering the summer sale is in just 2 hours (27 june)
Bots should know by now.
Pretty, but pretty dull. Worst HL game by a long way.
Worth giving a go just to see the visuals if you pick it up on sale, but don’t expect amazing gameplay. It’s old, it was figuring out VR, and it shows.
Like every other comment, yes it is worth it, one of, if not thee, greatest games I've ever played.
HOWEVER
I recommend playing anything else first. Many others have stated that it is the standard, and it is. So if you peak too early, be ready to always be chasing a high that currently cannot be replicated.
Yes
If you can play VR “scary” games (not flat screen scary, those games are easy mode) then I’d say 100%
I hope you are kidding but still, there is HL Alyx and then there's everything else in VR. This is an awesome game VR or not
Yes
Been playing VR since 2016 and Alyx is still my #1 VR game. It is a must-play if you have VR
Yes
Yes
If you wish to relive half life 2 in a spectacularly claustrophobic way? Yes! Its great!
YES! Buy it already.
Best VR game. Period.
Yes
you get it for free with an index.
and yes.
its a must play. especially for VR.
i mean any half life is but for VR its a must play.
Well that’s not very free…
lol really? It’s bar none the best VR game there is and it’s on sale…duh
It's absolutely worth it
I find it scary as hell but excellent...
Play ever other VR game you can first. Because Alycia will ruin VR for you.. no other game comes close.
its on sale, try it for yourself, try to keep the refund window in mind if youre really unsure. if you get drawn in enough to play it for more than 2 hours, might as well see it through. alternatively, see if a friend who has it but isnt playing it will set up a steam family with you so you can play their copy. just look into the steam families beta.
Amazing game you will deffo enjoy it!
100% yes
Pretty much best vr game made so far
Absolutely worth it in 2024, though I'd also suggest Into the Radius and Vail VR for multiplayer besides it. Easily the best shooters currently on the market
Short answer: Yes
Long Answer Yes, but also get Into the Radius (soon getting a sequel) and Brazen Blaze (the only VR game I made a montage of lol, very solid fighting game that doesn't get mentioned often enough)
I think it is worth it, but I would wait till tomorrow since it might go on the steam summer sale.
Yes, but make sure you play HL1, HL2, HL2 E1, HL2 E2 first. They go on sale for very cheap and all have VR mods.
HL2 ep.2 was even a better gaming experience than Alyx.. Almost seems made for VR. But also the Striders in regular HL2. Amazing. Alyx is kindof lacking in the action department, but such a beautiful and continuosly "wow" experience even if each and every enemy footstep is scripted. I'll never forget Jeff..
I disagree. I never played other HL, and it's not necessary to *play* them. Because they are really old, and gameplay elements can be a turn off.
however, reading a summary / let's play is a great choice. I did a mix of these. I saw the HL2 end in a video, and I would say it's mandatory to fully understand some elements. And it makes sense only if you know the story of HL1 and 2.
Yeah more of the same really on what people are saying but I'll add this.. Alyx feels like what a AAA game is on the PC back in the day, story line, amazing graphics etc. It's the VR equivalent essential.
Nowadays people just seem impressed with good physics, be is good or bad graphics wise, storyline is subjective so I won't touch that, but Alyx has it all really.
I think p3ople are amazed due to when it came out that nothings managed to nail everything together.
Hope that helps.
You haven’t heard the praise already? Lol
Best vr game for me so far
Steamunlocked.net
Yes
Absolutely yes
Yes
Yes.
Still the best VR game by a long shot.
It’s constantly on sale, so I’d wait. It’s still probably worth full price though. I still have not had many other VR experiences that rival it
Yes
It's worth it even if you just use it as an intro for VR ,by only playing the first level
I didn't even know people asked this question
Ye

Yes.
100% worth it. Best VR game I've played by far, and the entire story is very replayable.

I bought an index just for it. It was worth the 1k
It will remain the best overall VR game/experience for a long time
YES!!!
Absolutely.
Nah, it's a janky game with bad graphics, not a masterpiece at all. /s
Yes.
Yes. It’s one of the best VR games out there.
It's literally the best VR game ever.
Yes I just started it after setting down my vr headset for years after being underwhelmed by the software on offer for it. Its fantastic, its what I hoped VR games would be like a few years after VR became a thing.
Steam sale starts in about 12 hours from this though so wait til then.
Alyx is a very good, very cinematic feeling game. If you love Half Life, you’ll love Alyx.
Now, for a game that will 100% make VR worthwhile, check out Blade and Sorcery. It is the most fun I’ve had playing a game pretty much ever…+ modders added lightsabers.
It's a must. Goes on sale ever so often for ~$20. If you like the franchise HL2, esp ep 2, is awesome in VR. Has much better action scenes. You need VR leggs for it though.
sale starts today, even the mods by themselves are worth it
sale starts today, even the mods by themselves are worth it
Yes, but wait till thursday the 27th for the summer sale. It'll probably be $20-$30.
Yes and boneworks if you can handle more movement and not get sick
i'd have linked to the scene on Youtube, but Youtube isn't allowed in this sub.
Is Alyx worth it? You find yourself in a poorly lit underground hall. There's light at the end. As you draw closer you make out the terrifying details of the scene. A quartered body is suspended in mid air with four ropes. Illuminated. There's a flashlight strapped to the mutilated body. That's the light source. You grab it. Now suddenly, you get to cast some light. But anywhere you don't point to is pitch black darkness. A scream. Footsteps. Something's coming! Point your light at it. Or your gun? Gosh you've only had the two together for 7 seconds. Something's coming.
The game generally is really fun, Valve has outdone the physics system in the game.
I will mention that I feel you won't get the full experience, unless you have the index knuckle controllers. If you can get them even separately, I would highly recommend them.
Regardless, totally a fun game to play. Brings back the good ol' arcade shooting vibes, but with a VR, modern twist.
This or blade and sorcery tho? I don’t have Alux. But I’m loving b&s. I thought that was the best save game so far in my opinion
Best game ever made in my opinion. I really hate the use of the word “immersive” but that’s the most you’ll ever be “immersed” in a piece of media ever
Bruh
Yeah definitely. Its the most visually impressive game in vr and the level of detail and thought gone into everything is very nice. Also pretty terrifying at parts if thats ur thing 🤣
Absolutely. I got it last time it was on sale and I loved it. One heck of an experience.
Yeah. It set the standard for how VR games should be to me. If more were like that, VR titles wouldn’t look as much like shovelware or like cheap VR conversions to everyone that isn’t familiar with VR.
Yes, pick it up. You will enjoy it.
Yesyesyesyesyesuesyesyes
Yes
Absolutely yes, I’m on a second play through after completing it a couple of years ago and it’s a really great game.
It's worth buying a headset for.
One of the best vr games I've played
yes also one of the best vr games with graphics and really optimized
Games don’t quite hit as hard since beating HL:A
Absolutely
Yes.
Absolutely best VR-game.
The best VR that has been released yet... "is it worth it? " OBVIOUSLY
wait for the summer steam sale, I got it for 60% off. Amazing game and best visuals ive seen so far.
Is it worth it. It’s by far the best Vr game available. Almost too good. It’s made practically everything else feel really lacklustre.
Worth the price? It's gonna ruin the rest cause you won't find another game so carefully crafted around VR. It was made to be a showcase for VR and the index controllers.
Yes, best experience ever made. Playing it outside in the garden using virtual desktop on a summers evening is peak gaming experience.
Only games that has ever come close to show what VR can do are elite dangerous (though VR now abandoned) and sim racers like project cars 2 and iracing, but you'll need a flight stick and sim wheel respectively.
If you're planning on other vr games, save Alyx till last, otherwise they just seem like wii games in comparison
Yes
Yes. I bought and played it about 2 months after getting VR 3 years ago and it's ruined me. There's plenty of fun games in VR but none of them come close.
Alyx is THE vr game
Best ever
Literally best vr game ever. Strong contender for general best game ever.
Absolutely yes! But there is a problem... Once you play Alyx all the other VR games that you play will feel really bad, to date there is still no better made VR game than Alyx.
Yes, it is
It is 100% worth it. There are also a good number of mods for alyx, that just give you more areas and situations to explore. There's one where you have no flashlight and the only source of light Is a flare you have to carry with you, but flares draw attention to you, but it's so dark, you need it, and you can hear things moving in the darkness. First time I ever freaked out that much in a video game. Now I understand how scarybheadcrabs really are
It’s the only good VR game, if you have VR and don’t play half life what’s even the point
YES
Yes.
Probably the best VR game made to date. Not that impressive when you realize that there is barely any competition but still a great game and not just a great VR game.
It is exceptional.
Easily the best VR game ever made and I have my doubts it will be topped anytime soon.
Y E S
best vr game i’ve ever played and every vr game should strive to do vr mechanics as well as it does
Best game for VR ive ever played, been playing VR for like 3 years.
