my partner is gonna be in boston and i’ll be in the new york area for about 2 months this summer and we want to be able to see each other as much as possible. it seems like our options are either driving to each other (we both hate driving) or taking the amtrak train to each other (expensive) and i was wondering if there’s any way to get the train tickets for cheaper? is there a frequent traveler kinda pass we could buy? we normally see each other every weekend and spending $140+ each weekend is a lot just for train tickets. i’m not too familiar with amtrak or finding cheap trains. thanks!

Book in advance. You can get tickets for as low as $15 each way for certain trains on that corridor. Otherwise, buses will be your best bet.
For Amtrak, use Amtrak Guest Rewards. It's a super simple points system, just every once in a while buy a trip using points instead of money.

Amtrak is stupid expensive where in some cases it's literally cheaper to fly. Unfortunately our rail situation is pretty abysmal. The only cheaper option I can think of is the bus, check out sites like wanderu or just Google 'nyc Boston bus', to find bus companies and good luck.
There might be so-called "Chinatown busses" operating from Chinatown to Chinatown, it used to be something like $10 one way. "The buses usually run nonstop between departure and terminus cities. In general, passengers wait in line outdoors to board, as there are typically no formal stations."
It'll be somewhat slower than train, but probably not much.
Flixbus, Megabus or Greyhound
You can take the bus for like $30 each way. Check out Wanderu (not affiliated with them at all, I’ve just used it before to find cheap bus tickets)

There are 10-20$ midnight amtraks
Greyhounds are expensive but in my experience those are the best for travel for a trip like that, I took one from nc to nyc to vermont four years ago

There are a ton of cheap buses. Greyhound, Megabus, Peter Pan etc. You can also take Amtrak to New Haven and then transfer to Metro North.
But also: if you book tickets early, Amtrak is cheap. I just picked a random date in July and found Amtrak seats NY-BOS for $27. But that price will increase as you get closer to the date of travel.
