Original 1940s hardwood throughout the house. We will be refinishing all of it except the kitchen. We want tile in the kitchen. We obviously cannot just put tile down directly onto the tile. Would need some concrete board or similar. With that we would then be talking a 1 inch difference in floor heights. What is the best way to go about this?
So there’s hardwood floor in kitchen and you want to tile over it?? It’s not clear what’s going on here
Correct. I've discovered that best course of action is to rip it out and put new subflooring down.
Tile setter here. Yes. You need to remove the hardwood and ideally the old subfloor( if it’s the old 6” boards run diagonally across the joists it has to go. It does not meet modern standards anymore) replace it with new 3/4” subfloor then a second layer of subfloor(plywood-not great but acceptable, cement board- better but watch some videos on how to do it properly or uncoupling membrane, also watch videos on how to do that properly
What happens if you dont? Tile is placed over the original hardwood in my kitchen currently.
No thinset manufacturer will warranty that when it starts coming loose.
