Title
Pink is my favorite crayon
Yeah, pink, it's like red....but not quite.
Save it! It’s awesome!
Yeah man! I’d lean hard into that. Period light fixtures & faucets!
Looks good, I’d preserve it personally.
It's beautiful. You could update the wallpaper and light fixture, everything else is lovely.
I agree !!!!!
Same
Please don’t change the pink tile. Vintage is coming back in style. People are tired of no character modern stuff. You could change out the toilet and vanity. Put up some different funky wallpaper.
I love the pink but I would see about changing the vanity and the toilet then pick a paint or wallpaper that works with the pink! Something with green or whites maybe?
Same. The appliances/whatever part of this room are not great. The tile is magical
Same - there are better salvaged or reproduction vanities - try to save as much as possible.
I have the same exact floor tile and wall tile, only difference being white tile edging instead of monochrome. I’ve been trying to find wallpaper I love that suits this but it’s a tough decision. Would love recommendations
The Instagram ‘vintagebathroomlove’ is absolutely full of really great wallpaper recommendations! The person who runs it is really nice too and would be able to help you a lot more than I can tbh.
This is a BEAUTIFUL bathroom. I would update all the accessories: mirror, light fixture and shower hardware.
If you want to do more I would switch the toilet out for a white one, get a wooden vanity and take the shower door down and change to a shower curtain. You can paint above the tile or get new wallpaper.
Please do not paint or get rid of the pink tile it’s so perfect
Keep it just the way it is. Maybe a new elongated soft close seat as well. I might also put in a new vanity but that’d be optional
My cousins house is like that. He redid the entire house more modern but left the OG bathrooms. Love it!
Keep all of it! It’s gorgeous.
Change the wallpaper to something that is more pink bathroom appropriate or change the wallpaper into something more subdued to slightly match the tile and tub/toilet/basin.
Don’t replace the toilet.
If you wanted to you could replace the vanity top, not the gray sink, only the countertop and the light fixture, to better bring the room into a pleasant atmosphere.
I would remove the gray glass slider if it really bothered you, but I think you could make that work a bit more if you work on the window covering.
Changing that out to compliment the gray could be a good idea, maybe even a stained glass fixed panel to not mirror the slider, but compliment it.
I love it
Love the Pepto Bismol look. 😂
i would change the wallpaper and get some cooler light (scones). Tiles etc will keep it tbh. Maybe get some floating shelves - fake plants etc to “light” up the vibe.
Update the light fixture and then see how you feel about it.
I think it’s pretty sweet. It may need some minor updating but I would try and keep the overall look.
Love this, maybe just change the wallpaper
By all means, throw away the cloth cover on the toilet lid.
Change the wallpaper, but please keep the pink tile!
Keep the tile and put in a fun wallpaper. Something like this maybe to balance out the super sweet and cutesy pink a bit!
I had that same tile floor and walls. The floor tile was worn to the point where the tile and the grout couldn’t be cleaned. In the end I had it all torn out and I don’t regret it.
I wish I could post some inspiration pictures on here but I don’t have the option.
Growing up my dad would tell me a story about my grandmother getting drunk one night and deciding to paint their toilet blue. She then left it to dry, but needed to use the bathroom before bed. Being drunk, she didn’t think about how the paint was wet until she screamed, waking up the whole house.
Even better, the house was abandoned, and one day when I was a teenager we decided to break in. As it turns out, the toilet was STILL BLUE!
Gorgeous. Update the fixtures, put in some visuals you like- new toilet, vanity, wallpaper or paint- but leave the tiles, they're an entirely inoffensive and dare I say fetching shade of pink and they seem to be in good condition and well installed.
The bathroom is nice. I would replace the curly bulbs with more modern bulbs and put globes around them. The curlies might look okay in the globes. I have just never seen them that way.
The light fixture and bulbs need to go but otherwise this bathroom is perfect. It’s only original once - don’t lose that.
Personally I’d keep almost everything but get a new/updated glass door for the tub, update the wallpaper, and maybe have a look at the light fixture and/or color of the vanity. Otherwise it’s super charming and probably well built.
I just did one of these. Many people want to restore the 1950’s home to original style. That said, there are some things to consider, if you are looking to go back to original, you need to inspect the condition of what is hidden. The tile is 66 years old, and have 66 years of wear, but if there is tile behind and underneath the vanity & commode, you may have different wear and this different color. You can probably see if there is tile behind the vanity by looking through because they usually didn’t have backs on the cabinets. If you want to keep the tile, remove the vanity & commode, scrub down the tile with a alkaline cleaner to remove surface dirt, grime, piss, etc… then do a deep clean with a product like, AquaMix Heavy Duty Tile & Grout cleaner.
Remove the wall paper, but I would add back a new more modern one. Replace the mirror, light, light switch, add a receptacle through the drywall, new pedestal sink (if the tile covers) new faucet.
If you want to make the bathroom modern, just understand, it’s not built like a home is today. It can be expensive. You can also go in with a more modern tile, I’ve found this is a good look that stays pretty loyal to the era.
that tile is classic
What are you going for? If it were me...
I don't understand what Reddit loves about pink tile.
The lighting there is poor. It could use some recessed lights and a new vanity fixture. I don't like the gaudy vanity mirror. Also the grey bath and toilet is ugly. And the wallpaper.
Yeah, this is a tear out for me.
Everything looks nice, that bathroom belongs in a Renovation History Museum
God damn this makes me miss my pink bathroom in our 57 mid century ranch. I regret getting rid of it. Treasure it.
I generally like things from the 50's. My whole kitchen i put in is from the 50's but I'm not in love with this bathroom.
The tile work is sloppy. I can't believe they did this with the light switch and there are no accent colors in the tilework. It is begging for a pin stripe and an edge color. Its literally just a field of pink. That vanity is tiny and I'd prefer a more contemporary look.
You could keep it 50's but make it so much better. Removing the top course of tile and adding an edging with a contrasting color would be a start.
Good Luck. The look might look good to some people, but IMO that pink is frightening. If you have lived with that look for years, that paneling- I have very similar in my bathroom - it gets old and claustrophobic. I get the desire to change. Mine has been damaged by renters, so I am looking for ideas, also. I am interested to see what people come up with for you.
Just had our home remodeled and the bathroom looked like this! Might be good for others but NAH-UHH. I'm good! LOL
If budget, I would update sconce and hardware / sink. If all out but want to keep the tile (which I think is nice), new toilet, floating vanity with new sink and hardware, new sconce, remove wallpaper and paint white or off white, new shower head, reglaze tub white, and update the tub door. If completely gut- leave the floor tile and pick something that looks good with it. That floor tile is so cute. I’m biased!
It owes you nothing.
Wow. This totally looks like my great grandma's bathroom. It was added to the house in the 60s after previously using an outhouse. When you opened the bathroom door, you had to take two steps down into the bathroom.
Dark wall paper!
This bathroom is great and well built, you can change the wall paper or the lighting but keep everything else.
Remove shower door, change vanity but keep gray sink (love the gray fixtures), change wallpaper, change faucet, change light fixture.
Hey I had the same bathroom!!
South Florida for ya!!
1.Remove the glass shower door... Get a shower curtain 2. Replace the vanity and top while incorporating the grey sink. More pedistal style if possible like this. . Make sure the tile goes under that newer 70s vanity and isn't gone before doing this. 3. New wallpaper more mid-century modern 4. New light fixtures with appropriate bulbs - or at least put globes in that one instead of the compact florescents. 5. Get a more mid-century mirror like this.
Ditch the wallpaoer
Could be so much prettier. Love the pink and the floor looks to be in good shape
Could be so much prettier. Love the pink and the floor looks to be in good shape
You can’t find that floor tile, save it. Unique colors are making a come back. Change the vanity and the wall paper. You’ll save thousands by keeping that awesome tile.
I would take out the grey glass and update with some kinda of framed gold glass. Change the chrome to gold. Maybe something classic brass.
Don’t change out the tub. Have it deglazed white professionally (it smells. The tub is cast iron and they have to weld it broken to change it out. It’s not worth it.). When you have this done, have them take out the vanity and the toilet.
Change out the toilet to a low flow self cleaning Kohler. Amazing. Quiet. Comfy height. The old ones make you feel like you are falling.
The vanity I would change out.
But keep the pink only only only if you don’t have loose tiles anywhere. Push in the corners of the tile bathtub tiles (where the tub meets tile). If it squishes in- you need to gut the whole thing.
Keep the tile- it’s amazing! Update the wallpaper, window treatment, lights, toilet and vanity. I’d probably even keep the medicine cabinet mirror!
People pay so much money for recreations of these original 1950’s tile, and often silly people looking to remodel the “ugly colors” end up demolishing thousands of dollars in antique, well maintained tile. My neighbor tore out his original 50’s pink sink and toilet, somebody came by within an hour asking to take them. He was super pissed when I explained why they were so excited for their find!
Those light bulbs look so silly in there
You kids might not know that back in the day, toilet paper came in green, pink and blue!
Punk remodel; keep all the original pink tiling, replace vanity, toilet, and tub/shower with modern and black stuff, make any accents or job tiled areas a black or something with white accents
Bought a house with a similar bathroom to this as well as one that was mint green.
Took 2 totally different routes with each.
1 was a complete gut and redo - prob $3k
The other was more of a temporary replacement. Tile paint, new wallpaper, epoxy coat the sink, and replace door with curtain. Less than $1k
I would preserve the tile if possible. And replace the tub, shower door, toilet, vanity, and wallpaper
Retro your friends will freak out
We just painted our pink bathroom ceiling and non-tiled wall Tricorn Black.
Looks lovely! New vanity (wood, but keep sink), paint wallpaper in a nice green that looks good with the pink and grey, new mirror and light fixture, new sink & shower fixture.
I’d personally remove the glass shower thing and do a curtain, but it could also stay.
I love it. So unique and I think some modern touches with the same general theme/style would look awesome. A different light fixture. Changing the counter to on the vanity. The current one looks cheap and dated. I like the sink, but the handles on the faucet look dated in a bad way. They have some cool options out there. Tbh id just replace the whole faucet and find retro knobs for it at an antique store or flea market.
Those blinds are awful.
I kind of like the idea of wall paper, but that wall paper has to go. Somewhere on the internet there is a wall paper that will modernize it, but still keep the vibe. White paint and no wall paper will also work, but would be a missed opportunity.
😍😍😍
As an owner of a pink bathroom, pleased dear God save the tile! You will thank me! Let the tile provide the color to the bathroom. paint the walls white, replace the light fixture with some thing more appropriate, and enjoy your 50s luxury ❤️😮💨
Keep the tile! Do a regrout of the tile and it will look great! No tub will be as nice as the current one. Get it reglazed and remove the door. It’s likely cast iron and high quality.
The fixtures toilet sink? kill.
Save the tile! But that wallpaper and vanity need to go.
Update mirror, and lights but everything else is still very nice. 😊
Just change the wallpaper. The tiles are amazing! I wish my 1989 ranch had tiles in the bathroom!
That floor is next level. Maybe some new wallpaper and update the light fixtures and mirror, but keep the rest!
Love the pink! I would personally get rid of the vanity but try to save the sink if possible and lean into the grey and pink maybe with some funky wallpaper and a new light fixture.
It's all preferences. I hate the pink with a passion but that's taste, I'd prefer a blue or something else similar. Otherwise, if you like it (it even can just tolerate) no reason to change is it's not broken and goes with the vibe you're trying to create in the house overall. And if the fixtures are in good condition, leave then too. Houses are expensive enough already, no need to make work for work's sake
Love love the pink! My grandparents house is also a 1958 mcm and both bathrooms in it are pink tiled!
Awesomeness
Personally the only things I'd change are the mirror and light fixtures.
It’s that terrible pink on top of some hideous wallpaper. Normally I like 50s era bathrooms. This one is a no go.
Not bad
Ditch the 70’s vanity hire a company to refinish tub by a nice new toilet keep the pink tile wall colors up to you maybe a nice grey,
Strip the wallpaper. Burn it. Under the silent, black cover of night. Speak of it never again.
It's up to you what aesthetic you want after that. There are some really cute period wall paper styles to consider. And if you paint, you'll want to consider the colors so you can coordinate your towel colors, decor etc.
That pink would look wicked nice with 1950s desert dusty turquoise!
Just don't fuck with the tile. That shit could protect you from a grenade. Seriously though, I bet it's bulletproof from the outside, depending on the caliber of gun of course. But I think it's going to stop anything up to a .44 mag. Lol. I still remember my first time demoing tile that was put in in the 1950s. It's not really something you can prepare for.
The pink tile is great and appears to be in very good condition. If staying with the 50s vibe you need to remove that wallpaper, get rid of the sink/cabinet and get a pedestal style sink and white. Replace the toilet and you’re good to go!!
Another thing I forgot about is the mirror and lighting. Those are imo more 70s/80s.
Update the lighting and the wallpaper. A modern large scale wallpaper really makes the vintage tile look cool and expensive! Also the quality of these old things is so much better than today. Seriously the wallpaper will really make it feel more relevant
Asbestos.
Nice!👍
Gorgeous. Clean everything and only replace what's broken or not functioning correctly. For the love of god do not "update" anything. Where necessary, only go back with modern items that help preserve the period look and feel.
I kinda dig it.
Change out the wallpaper and try to get a more period authentic light but otherwise leave it alone. I love it!
❤️
Thoughts? It’s very pink.
The tile is great. The shower screen is awful replace it with shower curtain and rod. The sink and vanity are terrible,Take them away get a white pedal foot sink and a white toilet and paint above the tile.
It's beautiful.
I would get rid of the wallpaper and the toilet seat cover.
Ohhh my gosh. Reminds me of my grandmas home from this era. Powder pink sink and matching tile throughout the bathroom. My dad and uncle tore it down without a second thought 😭
Cool af
So good! Love the pink.
Add some fallout themed artwork and boom, complete.
The things to consider changing wallpaper, counter top & base cabinet. Keep the drop in sink.
Dont you dare touch it
Change out the goofy CFL bulbs - swap them to some LED frosted vanity spherical bulbs that are warm white (efficient, but appear period correct).
Then deep clean. Tidy up.
And leave the rest alone. It's a beautiful time capsule! Don't ruin it.
The tile is amazing!!!!
The fixtures look like they are a mix of 60’s and 80’s. You might consider keeping the cabinet doors. Can’t tell if the tub is original.
Whatever you do please please leave the tile? I had a beautiful bathroom that they remodeled but left all the turquoise blue tile. I loved it so much.
The pink is so beautiful. The wallpaper isn't my style but my style is not others. Please though, for the love of all that is holy, remove the rug cover on the lid. These are just bacteria breeding grounds.
I’d probably keep the floor and the wall tile behind the toilet and vanity and get rid of the rest.
But that’s just because I hate tubs and there would be no way to match the wall tile when going to a full shower.
Depending on the money you want to spend you could find vintage sink, tub, toilet in white or pink. The gray is pretty hard to deal with in my opinion. But the pink is awesome. Jealous of the floor. New wallpaper, light, and faucet is a must.
Set it on fire.
Update the aluminum and chrome to brass and it’ll look like a Pinterest board for a 2024 bathroom
Complete gut job
Don’t touch a thing. Done by true craftsmen.
IMHO get rid of the lights above sink and wallpaper, just sayin
Good Golly Miss Molly!
What do you like/not like? What’s working and what doesn’t?
So many details missing..
Save the tile!!! That is amazing. I would try to bring it back to its former glory. Everything else looks like a hodgepodge of stuff over the years.
Wow I’d just leave it
Time for a remodel?
Embrace it. Update with art, accessories, linens that tribute the MCM era.
Keep the pink and update mirror, lighs
Just going echo what everyone else is saying, preserve all of that tile, at bare minimum at least the tile surrounding the shower and vanity... If you feel its too much pink and want a relatively maintenance free flooring you could use LVP instead.
Update the toilet, vanity and use a darker and more moody wallpaper + lighting and the bathroom will be a completely different space.
Yeah that light bar has to go, maybe replace the toilet and vanity
I have that same sink and tub in the color of your tile in my house.
Lose the fluorescent bulbs, 60w globe bulbs may not be period but better than the curlicues.
It's stunning. Leave it exactly how it is!
I want a pink bathroom like that so badly. Personally, I would update the lights, the wallpaper, and get a more modern toilet because they tend to be taller.
Paint the walls to match the tile.
Serious question - are you concerned about the ghost in the mirror?
Personally I’d gut this out and redo…put some nice and functional modern accents …it’s a nice size and you can make this Into a beautiful modern bathroom
I would change the shower door-looks like 1980s. Bare bulbs over the sink are unattractive. Leave everything else. Wonderfully vintage.
Wow! Great bones!
Salvage the sink. Take it out carefully to reuse in a new same size vanity with new faucets.
Taking out and replacing the tub without hurting the tile would be very tricky. But if you do you will never match that tile. Use gray instead as a counterpoint to the sink and toilet. Make sure to use Hardi backer board behind the tile if you go this route. Replace the faucets and shower head with something as high chrome as you can get.
Those old toilets rock because they actually flush! So if it is not cracked leave it alone! You can always put a brick in a ziplock in the tank if you want to save water. There are a lot of salvage firms that deal in toilet parts if you need a tank cover.
The wallpaper needs an update for sure. Lots of choices there. Just make sure you stick to the color and scale if the bathroom. Or you can have a professional give the place a work over and go with paint.
I would live with the mirror. It suits the room. But I have had good luck with sanding and redoing the insides.
Get a bigger toilet - like an oval egg instead of that round one - ur nuts will thank you
Leave it alone! Just replace those light bulbs.
Rip it all out and don’t look back.
Reddit has an unusual obsession with mid century pink bathrooms.
I had one like this. Really cool. Really unusable. I gutted it. Now it’s really cool and really usable.
Love it.
Echoing the sentiment that the pink is glorious. A new mirror / light, vanity would be all it "needs." But it doesn't even need that.
Is that an original pedestal sink that someone surrounded by a cabinet? If so get rid of the cabinet and open up the space.
Keep the tile. Replace everything else, incl. wallpaper.
Matches and lighter fluid.
People saying “save it” on this thread are wild. Like no, get yourself a nice bathroom that looks good and not like your grandmas
I'm their grandma. It does look good.
Me personally no. Complete do over.
Looks awful. Gut it
I lived with a similar pink tiled bathroom for years. I was so happy to move.
No, this one needs a total redo. Those metal-edged sinks are grim!
Hey I have that floor and tile shower!! God do I hate it. My other bathroom is a bluish color.
You are actually lucky to have a nice bathroom.
Easy to say leave it when you aren't living there. I personally would ropmot all out and out in something more modern, especially if the rest of the house is modernised.
I'd gut it. Not my style or taste. I'm sure there is a way to do something with the pink by changing the wallpaper, vanity, light and mirror.
Often times the fixtures are to low and can be difficult to replace it repair.
It's a nice pink but there's to much of it for me.
On the bright side, the layout seems good!
I have to admit, I’m not on board with saving this one. It looks like it’s in good shape, so if you like the colour of the tile you could replace the toilet, vanity, mirror, wallpaper, and floor.
But if it were me, I’d gut the whole thing to the studs and install modern everything.
It’s done its time; now set it free. 🪦 🔨
Sorry take it back down to studs and keep the footprint. Maybe a dual shower head from the ceiling if you got the room and accessibility. I don't know your design taste but 99% buying that house doesn't want a pink bathroom.
It's why when I remodel I go with white. It's classic and timeless.
Pink is becoming very popular and 90% of people like it now.
If you don’t love the tile and don’t want the hassle of taking it down, you could cover it with beadboard wainscoting
I’d change the toilet to an elongated bowl and definitely change that vanity and probably the mirror
General refresh, new tub, vanity, toilet and tile. I’d take advantage and install new shutoffs for the sink and valves for toilets and tub. If the bathroom has never been touched there’s a good possibility of galvanized steel piping and asbestos insulation so be careful with that. No idea of how your exterior is but I’d have a new window installed as well. Oh new light above the tub, new vanity light and exhaust fan.
A crow bar and a hammer …. Pink tile = drags down the whole house I’m sure ,,just please no I said no sterile grey and white !!!
Just a new toilet that one looks painful
The wall tiles are great, but I’m not really a fan of everything else, and this is coming from someone who loves midcentury design. Personally and, ironically, I’d dial back the time period and keep the pink walls but go for more of a 1920s look with some black accents. I also think it would look great with some terracotta-colored flooring.
Not my style or color (pink). I would redo it. But many people would say it’s retro and cool.
Love the pink.
