Divestment from companies is the main ask during these campus protests.

At least from what I've seen for the Columbia one, they specifically called for divestment from tech companies like Alphabet and Microsoft that provide services in Israel. But these investments are not individual companies, all in diversified index funds that are safe and profitable like what most of us have in our retirement portfolio.

So I'm trying to understand if calling for divestment is a reasonable ask, or are the protesters naive to how investments work?

It also seems to be a bit hypocritical to call for divestment from these tech companies when the protesters surely must still be using Google and Windows products on a daily basis.
