Don’t be this person in Mount Rainier NP. Reported to the Rangers…. CHICKENS!??
I was shocked. So was the park ranger when I met him up there. Never seen something like this.
What did the ranger do?
These people beat feet quickly once they heard cars. Left some trash behind including chicken feed. Ranger was shocked, told me he would’ve cited them had he caught up to them before they left.
Oh the teeth!
i can't fathom the thought process that led to them taking chickens to mount rainier
They’re emotional support chickens.
Yes, chickens are excellent emotional support animals for coyotes coping with anxiety over what to do for dinner tonight
Imagine being a wild predator, still daydreaming about last week's rabbit and suddenly you come across a whole flock of fat, delicious food.
Funny you should say that. As I met someone that has a ‘pet’ chicken. Like wtf. But she has one…
makes sense to me, they're much more domesticated than almost any other bird that is kept as a pet. ranking only with pigeons i'd think
Chickens make really good pets actually
We have pet chickens. They are old and don’t lay very many eggs but we keep them around because we’ve grown attached to them.
They wander around the yard and will hang out when I’m doing yard work looking for freshly exposed ground that might yield treats. I enjoy having them around but I wouldn’t take them anywhere.
I had a pet chicken growing up.
I met someone with a ESA SKUNK....
I’ve seen people put chicken diapers on them and keep them indoors. Some people will do anything for a cock.
Only in Washington lmao!
Maybe they like fresh eggs in the morning.
Maybe he thought the Coyotes, Foxes, Wolves, Bears, Raccoons or Wolverines were hungry and needed a snack?
Homeless. They are homeless. Home bums. Derelicts. Drifters. Hobos without the train. They are not interested in your “rules”.
Are you really camping if you don’t have fresh eggs in the morning?
That’s a very good point. I think if they had pigs it’d be fine, eggs and bacon.
I believe that’s how The Pig War of 1859 started.
The only real answer..
OP they brought a grill. Stop being an elitist /s.
Besides, these ppl are clearly UL backpackers in prep. Get the food to walk itself….brilliant!
Gotta work on that FKT man
You guys are hilarious!
It really is.
Are they on a leash?
For the record, these people are illegally camping in a parking lot at a trailhead. Chickens are not native to the park and there’s trash everywhere. Everyone should have an issue with this. Take care of our parks so we can all enjoy them, don’t invite predatory animals, leave no trace, be respectful of others.
He brought eggs and they hatched
Stop being a judgy asshole
Hahahahaha!
Tweakers…
You mean OP? Maybe, getting outraged over chickens is pretty crazy behavior.
Idk if OP is outraged, but I'm still not understanding what the problem is here? Animals being outdoors?
You mean, aside from taking half of the trailhead parking so they can camp illegally while throwing trash around? National parks usually have more stringent requirements around invasive species and pollutants, since the parks also serve as nature preserves. Thus, in most national parks Mt. Rainier included) pets are only allowed, on leash, in certain campgrounds, in parking lots and on certain paved trails. You always have to pick up pet waste. Frequently, livestock feed will need to be certified in one way or another (“weed-free” in Yellowstone and Rocky Mountain National Parks). In some places, you can be ticketed for even urinating in the area, and human waste at Camp Muir (high on Mt. Rainier) is such a problem that require climbers to carry bags to carry their feces out in.
I’m honestly not understanding why you don’t think this is a problem. I have 14 chickens (and one asshole rooster, god he’s a prick) and I spend enough time scraping chicken shit off of my boots to understand why that could be a serious ecological concern for an area that doesn’t normally have chickens or chicken feed in them.
I'm not familiar with the area or the rules which is why I asked. Thanks for explaining it politely.
Omg I was just at Lake Wenatchee last night and there was a lone rooster who chilled with me at our campsite all night! So if you're missing a handsome man and love off FR 65, your rooster is homesick lll
That rooster got dumped, happens all the time
What else are they supposed to do with their chickens when visiting Mount Rainier?
I suppose they make food and are food in an emergency.
Me, in an emergency: “do I shave the face?”
A few years ago there were some chickens hanging out along the Taylor river— someone must have dumped them there. I saw them a couple of times and then never again.
I think some predator had a nice chicken dinner.
These ones were definitely not natural. They were brought in cat kennels.
JFC
KFC
UFC
Jesus fucking christ. Kentucky fucking christ. Ultimate fucking christ.
There are too many posts to look through.. so idk if anyone else has said this or not. Chickens can carry lots of different diseases and parasites, so bringing them into the woods like that is just asking for trouble. Could be passing along all sorts of different things that could do a lot of damage to the local wildlife
These people are nomads moving their livestock. We should be thankful to see transhumance in action.
Hear hear!
Pumas are gonna eat good tonight.
They call em cougars up here.
It’s the same cat that has many names, I use them interchangeably. I can see the mountain from my house up here.
Someone taking fresh eggs too far
Do you want bears, because that’s how you get bears!
Everyone knows you camp with your service Rooster.
Service cock*
I feel like that'd be a good way to get face to face with a predatory animal.
Sure hope those birds don’t have the Avian Flu.
It's a good way to attract the big predators to your campsite
The campsite, which is actually a parking lot, too. So many problems here !
- The full-sized propane grill just crammed in the bed of the truck.
- Do the chickens sleep in that cat—carrier?
- That’s a Crumpled-ass tent.
Breaking rules is breaking rules, and rules are there for reason morons just can't understand. What gets me is the notion of a "dispersed campsite" in MRNP. That's alone is a no-go situation.
Ppl like that are gonna get things shut down for everyone why tf do you bring chickens? For what??
They were trying to help out by feeding the wild…with chickens!!
Coyote food.
What the cluck
Avg truck driver behaviour
Is there an app or something yall use to report? Would love to know what it is.
No, I drove down the mountain and talked to the entrance folks who called the rangers.
Where was this exactly?
Westside Road
Wow that's really in MRNP proper. How did they go through the gate with chicken? Didn't the ranger notice?
There aren’t rangers up there before 7am. We must have been the first to show up because they beat feet after we left to go snitch on them. LoL.
Obviously the cat carriers are not super stealth, but when I was moving, I built a little carrier coop to move my chickens. It fit right into a spot in my van to keep them nice and comfortable and cool. It wasn’t meant to be stealth, but I guess I smuggled some chickens into California ca 2019.
Wait why is this bad?
Loads of rules violated, trash everywhere, camping illegally and not to mention the safety concerns domestic animals bring illness wise and physical dangers to humans.
I think bringing animals that don't belong to a specific national Park is probably the worst offense here. It can mess up the ecosystem. Like bringing snakes to islands, they would eat bird eggs and suddenly no more birds. Or end up like Hawaii, chicken literally everywhere.
Absolutely. Had it been just a camper with some trash, I may have just talked to them. The fact it looked like they were moving their farm in? Yeah, problem.
So I'm assuming you would call the ranger to report someone who brought their dog camping with them, too. Right?
If it was against the rules, yes
Dogs are in fact banned from MRNP so yes.
Oh yeah so many dangerous illnesses
I bet you think your chicken is made in the grocery store, too.
Mmm yeah.. you’ve pegged me completely wrong
I read sarcasm in your comment. It’s the internet maybe I misinterpret it.
I was being sarcastic. Really I was just being a twat. Disregard.
The internet makes people ill spirited (talking about myself)
Fair enough. I appreciate that last comment though. I find myself getting caught up in it too often, too. Good day!
Potential to spread bird flu to wild bird populations for one thing, for another attracts predators and makes them associate humans with food, which usually leads to them being euthanized.
Please site an instance of this happening.
Why does it have to happen for you to understand that we should avoid it happening??? Your comment makes no sense! You are probably the same kind of person that lets your cats roam around unchecked to prey on local indigenous birds. Jesus Christ!
Oh I'm sorry I should have taken that claim at face value, never mind people who bring their dogs with them camping. Is that somehow any different? Would you be saying the same thing about that? Also while we're making wild accusations, you're probably the kind of person that has to knock on every door when you go to a new neighborhood to "introduce yourself" before you're allowed to live there.
My cats are indoors. Is if that has some sort of logical sense to compare that to chickens.
First reasonable and relevant google result (there are more) on diseases between wild birds and chickens:
https://news.uga.edu/wild-birds-and-backyard-chickens/
(A bunch of instances in there from well-done studies)
First result about bears and chickens that wasn’t mostly about veganism. This is bears coming to chicken coops, but bears return anywhere there is food. Same applies to foxes and coyotes.
https://www.mass.gov/news/read-this-if-you-keep-backyard-chickens
ETA: personally, I think feeding the bears and coyotes is likely a much bigger problem than diseases, but introducing non-native species is almost always a bad idea.
I prefer this over dogs.
Emotional support chickens
Is this how we get Ranger the free range chicken at Safeway?
Is fun illegal now?
Nope
Woahhh
Then no dogs allow cuz they poop more bacteria
Dogs already aren’t allowed. LoL.
🫠🫠🤣🤣
🐔
What an ass
Maybe temporarily homeless/displaced, and trying to keep their family together? Family including their animals.
Yeah… deep in the national parks isn’t the place for that.
Hopefully this is felony and they are charged as such.
Hopefully you never are allowed to make any decisions involving laws in any fashion.
It's definitely unusual but I don't understand why this is bad.
Occupying a parking lot and camping unlawfully, trash everywhere, chickens (unlawfully) in the mountains with who knows what domestic animal viruses/bacteria that’s foreign to the mountains… lots wrong with this. It’s also against loads of NP rules for camping and pets/livestock.
I filled out a rec.gov permit an hour ago and they asked if I have a llama. Interestingly, the llama didn't cost anything.
Llamas are used as pack animals and generally have the same rules as horses and mules.
Can someone explain why this is such an asshole move? I know non indigenous animals and plants can have bad, unanticipated imprints…I know popular parks are especially important to consider your footprint… but I don’t get exactly why bro gong chickens is BAD
I mean, they are camped illegally, so I’m betting that bringing chickens is along the same lines as “…while naked” appended to any run of the mill crime.
Where is the evidence they are camped illegally?
It’s in a parking lot. Tough to tell from the photo. They’re literally utilizing half the parking spaces for this trailhead. I also doubt they could get a permit to camp in this location.
There’s not many car camping campgrounds in MRNP, and none of them look like that. In fact, I don’t know of any national parks where the tent camping amounts to “here, just pitch your tent on the pavement”. Closest I’ve encountered is Death Valley, and even they had dedicated tent pads.
What an asshole move to report them. There is a bbq in the back of the truck, they clearly were planning to eat the birds while camping. Stop being so full of yourself and mind your own business!
Haha. Sorry not sorry
That’s precisely the limp wrist type of response I thought I’d get from an entitled little twat like you. Stay salty ❄️
I have no salt. I’m loving life.
Whatever you gotta tell yourself to sleep at night. Enjoy turning in the Jews under the floor board ya douche ✌️
Extremist much?
Calling the police on someone who isn’t directly threatening you is equitable to calling the gestapo on Jews hiding from the nazis. Your actions are extremist..not me calling you out on your bullshit
Sure thing buddy.
I’m not your buddy, pal
I’m not your pal, buddy.
What's the problem exactly?
it also appears like they dumped random seeds on the ground to feed the chickens
Yeah and plastic cups floating around on the ground. Definitely not the most tidy campsite.
You can’t bring chickens into a national park. Haha. Illegally camping in a parking lot as well. Trash everywhere.
Bringing domestic (or other non-native) animals to a National Park. It's a conservation area for a reason.
It's not any different than people bringing their dogs.
You literally can't bring dogs to a National park except in parking lots and paved roads, and they have to be on a leash: https://www.nps.gov/mora/planyourvisit/pets.htm
People bring their dogs all the time though. Are you calling the ranger to report them too?
People report dogs all the time in the national park.
That's good. I will start doing that too then.
You should.
Just don’t harass someone with a service animal.
Dogs on trails in National Parks? Yes, I do report them because they are not allowed. Same with drones. I almost never see people do it though because most people can read and there are signs.
If we're talking about National forests with views of Mt Rainier or state parks, different rules apply and dogs are allowed.
Alright looks like I'll have to start reporting on people bringing their dogs
You really should, I do. It’s a problem if people do.
Dog people don't follow rules, lol
Yes lol
Dogs aren't allowed on most trails in National Parks.
The uptight karens who let their dogs shit all over the place have big problems with chickens. Anything but a labradoodle raises their blood pressure.
I dont know how somebody allows this kind of stress in their life- chickens in tow. F that. Might as well take a few toddlers with you. Other than that, if he left no trace it probably isnt hurting anything.
Thank goodness neighborhood Karen is saving the world for us
It’s a tough job, someone’s got to do it.
Funny. You Washington liberals are happy to have your cities look like the third world with tents and drug addicts but if someone wants to escape it all and try and life off grid away from the drug infested cities: you throw a fit like a child.
I hate everything about my state other than the geography of it. The people suck. I want out but I’m stuck. I am not one of those libs.
Is the crime severe enough to dox the person?
100%. This is blatantly obviously illegal. They scurried out so fast bc they know they were up to no good. Also—- do you know who they are or where they live based on a license plate number?
Every state is different but Washington does allow it for certain individuals, and with money you can pay for it as well. I never said it wasn’t illegal though. Personally I would blur any personal details from photos I would post online. I wouldn’t want to feel responsible for any misfortune that happened as a result of posting it. But maybe you’re hoping for it. If so, again does it fit the crime? If I caught you speeding a shared your photo on Reddit is that ok? Camping on the side of the road with chickens feels more stupid and ignorant than malicious.
The NP does not allow camping on the Westside road with chickens for anyone.
Sure. It’s illegal to speed. Also rolling stops are illegal. Lots of things are illegal. Don’t commit crimes. The national park is responsible for punishment, not you. Send them the picture and license plate. That’s the appropriate response. Blur the photo for online discussion.
I did send it. They were in public like this, nothing wrong with keeping it public. They showed it off first publicly.
Can’t beat that logic 🤪.
Yeah, selfish pricks illegally camping should have their stupidity on display. They keep doing these things because of weak consequences.
Who cares? Why are you being an asshole and getting into other people's business?
Because they’re camping in a parking lot taking up half the space illegally, bringing wildlife into the national park that shouldn’t be there while leaving trash everywhere. Why DONT you care?
Were you struggling to find a spot or were you just looking for someone to narc on? I would never do something like this camping but I also wouldn't go out of my way to take pictures of them and report them. Just seems like a bitch move to me. This shit isn't that egregious.
We disagree on that completely. I think doing nothing and letting people ruin our national parks with this kind of nonsense is the bitch move.
Well remind me to always be minding my p's and q's and never do anything that's not allowed camping around you or else it will immediately get reported. Congrats on being a fucking snitch.
Sign me up as a snitch, I’m good with that. This world needs more of them. It’s not hard to not be an asshole. These people are assholes and it sounds like you’re fine with assholes.
How do you know? Did you even have the balls to talk to them or did you just take your pictures and report them like a bitch? This is classic online warrior shit. If you have a problem with someone at least have the guts to confront them personally about it.
I see no point in arguing with you. I don’t trust people nowadays due to the amount of violence and drugs. I also wasn’t carrying my firearm, because it’s a national park. Have a good day.
Seriously you sound like a huge bitch. I would never report shit I disliked without talking to them about it first. You are a coward.
Hahahaha.
There’s like this thing where you let stupid people weed themselves out of society and reproducing, and these are fine examples. You threw the world out of balance.
WERE THE CHICKENS TRYING TO KILL YOU? Why the fuck do you care? Bc you’re the entitled asshole in this situation. Let the downvotes begin. Obv this sub is full of suburban Karen’s who spend most of their time on nextdoor
You must live in the big city and probably leave your dogs poo where it lays. Have some respect for the rules and the reason for the rules, this one is obvious. We don’t want the national parks looking like Seattle.
Wonder if OP calls the ranger over people bringing their dog camping since it checks all the same boxes OP has cited as reasons that this is such a ranger call worthy crime.
I would 100%! Pets should 100% not be in MRNP. It’s a problem.
Chicken sushi.
Some of you need to stay in Seattle and not be let out. The pic does not show garbage everywhere.
Zoom in. They’re feeding the chickens in a styrofoam takeout container, plastic cups all over, more trash behind me. I live just outside of the park, this is disgusting behavior. Seattle needs to stay up there, stop sending their trash to the NPs
Then you need to learn how to take better pictures because this one makes you look like a fool.
Well. You’re pretty alone on this take.
Very similar to your comments here.
Reported to the ranger lol
Why don't you mind your own fuckin business you Nerd.
I was minding my own business. National parks are land I help pay for. I don’t want trash up there.
Shit take, nerd.
Mind your own business.
You can’t bring chickens into a national park. Illegally camping in a parking lot as well. Trash everywhere. It is my business.
What happens on federal land is our business. We own it!
sorry about your disability
My taxes and my donations help pay for these parks. Absolutely my business.
National Parks belong to the people this is our business. Even without the chickens this is shitty. This is the Westside road and camping here is illegal and there's litter everywhere. Fuck this selfish jerk.
This is our business. Access to public lands get restricted because of misuse like this.
Licking my balls is your business.
Never underestimate another person’s ability to be a self centered ass hole.
