Faith in Others wins the best vote. What is the worst song from Pale Communion? Most upvoted comment wins (interludes, bonus tracks, instrumentals don't count)
Best / worst / underrated - Day 32. The worst song from Pale Communion?
Cusp of Eternity. It doesn't have an iota of the darkness and melancholy that made Opeth so great, sounds like something made by Orphaned Land (no disrespect to them) or similar projects.
Elysian woes
wow how is this so upvoted while all of the other contenders are getting mass downvoted For me this is one of the better songs from the album, top 3 for sure
I don't find Elysian Woes to be a bad song, but it is a bit forgettable. I kinda forget how the song goes until I listen to it again.
this is the best song on the album
Wow, didn’t expect that honestly. Treason and Cusp of Eternity are worse for me.
Slither is a great track, the guitar reminds me of Blackmore in Rainbow.
It’s basically a ripoff of Kill the King, to be fair.
It's not bad, in fact it's one of my favorites but it's hard to choose a bad song from Pale Communion, so maybe Elysian Woes.
Goblin
OP said that instrumentals don’t count
I like Goblin. It sounds like the background music for a 70's cop show.
Now I can’t unhear that - love it
Goblin doesn't count, it's an instrumental.
Goblin is 4 1/2 minutes, it’s definitely not an interlude so I feel like it shouldn’t be treated as one just for being instrumental
This is prog though, an instrumental can be just as much of a song as a song with vocals. Besides, Goblin is over 4 minutes, it's a legit song, not just an interlude
Off topic:
I'm new to Opeth - I've only listened to Orchid and Morningrise. Can someone more knowledgable explain Morningrise's song selections? I'd have gone:
B = Black Rose Immortal
W = Eternal Soul Torture
U = Advent/Nectar
Eternal soul torture didn't count as it's a bonus track/demo. The fanbase is VERY split when it comes to black rose immortal, me for example think it's one of opeth's weakest songs, many others find it to be one of the absolute best. To Bid You Farewell has always been highly regarded by most fans, but also kinda splits the fanbase a little bit. The thing with the first two albums in general is that it splits the fanbase in many ways. Those who love The Night and the Silent Water REALLY love it and was dedicated enough to make sure it grabbed the underrated spot. Personally i would have placed mectar in underrated for sure, but it got picked as worst. Not very surprising as it's never talked about, never gets any love and is pretty misunderstood in my opinion.
Thank you for the explanation.
Eternal soul torture didn't count as it's a bonus track/demo.
Ah right. In that case, To Bid You Farewell was the weakest for me.
Elysian woes
Cusp of Eternity. It’s got some of my favorite Opeth riffs but the song itself isn’t great and idk what was going on in 2013 but Mikael’s voice just doesn’t sound good.
wdym it's one of his best singing performances
If you say so. I don’t care too much for his clean singing in newpeth. His clean singing in Oldpeth was much better, and I feel like how much older he’s gotten has something to do with it
Cusp of Eternity
Eat a Snickers, you're not you when you're hungry
Yeah, you're absolutely right. The riff is awesome but that's all there is to the song, it just keeps returning to the same ass riff. And the chorus is boring. Decent song but definitely the worst in this album
Voice of Treason
Cusp of Eternity, it’s too much repetetive to me
Yeah, it’s pretty boring. Really surprised people think Elysian Woes is the worst. The second half of that song is one of my favorite parts on the album.
This. It's low key a banger live, but the mix on the album lacks punch to make up for how repetitive it is.
I would have said goblin. Can’t find anything other than this which would fit in this category.
For best track you picked the one that literally, shamelessly rips off Pink Floyd? Really?
What song does faith in others rip off?
Dogs
You’ve got to be crazy
You gotta have a real need
You're either stupid, deaf, or you didn't listen to the song. Tell me how the piano riff at 5:30 in Dogs isn't the exact same piano riff in the middle quiet section of Faith in Others.
Gotta admit, that I’m a little bit confused
Yeah, I agree that the part is dogs but faster. Although, I think how its used works very well for the song instead of the whole being a 1:1 copy. It also works as a good break period before the next oooooo section.
Eternal rains will come. I find it pretty boring
Moon Above, Sun Below
River.
Fucking what, lmao. Genuinely one of their best songs.
It’s good, Pale Communion is one of my favorite Opeth records and I like every song on it. River is my least favorite on it, idk why it just never clicked with me.
Goblin
Yeah my vote would go to River too. I love Elysian Woes.
Cusp of eternity is the best in this album I think. Faith in others is second
Treason, River or Elysian Woes. Probably Treason as that's when I realised unfortunately Newpeth were going somewhere I didn't want to follow. The stupid keyboard riff, ergh, gives me the bad shivers. River isn't too far behind, mind, showing us their new happy-pop direction.
Imagine calling any era of Opeth happy-pop. You are of course free to not like newpeth, but saying what they are putting out now is both happy and pop is insane
The intro to River is like nothing they've ever done before. It's objectively happy and uplifting. Find me that pre-PC. A lot of the song continues with this theme. The ending gets a bit darker, iirc.
Perhaps pop was the wrong word.
River as a whole is nowhere near happy
It's touch and go. The first three minutes are pure uplifting cheese. Then a slight dip into melancholy which then finishes on another uplifting sequence. Then a largely forgettable lengthy dual guitar solo. Then a few more forgettable widdly guitar riffs.
Finally at 6:22 we have what I would consider Opeth doing what they do best. Evil. Unfortuntely it lasts all of 25 seconds before we're back to the usual crap they're offering up these days.
Got it, real music fans don't like happy music
No, you don't really get it. I'm saying it's the first time in Opeth's history that they started writing uplifting music and set the trend for Sorceress and ICV.
...and what's wrong with that? let them be
I never said it was wrong? Are you ok? I'm giving my opinion as to why I don't like the song. Sheesh.
You really sounded like it's a bad thing that they started making uplifting music
Off topic but most songs from the worst section are still bangers. I love Opeth.
