Yo, I went through the 80s, and this is the first time I've ever heard that.
Might actually be Santa Monica Boulevard Squares or Beverly Hills Girls, or Valley Girls.
I feel like she just made that up on that spot or it was local. I'm 44 and I've never heard of it.
If you’ve never heard of “scroaned,” you’re streets behind.
Stop trying to make that happen
You scroaned. You totally scroaned.
55, grew up in SoCal and never heard it.
I grew up in Los Angeles county, and never heard it.
I bet she was trying to troll the interviewer, or maybe become the originator of a cool new word everyone uses now
I like it. I think it deserves another chance
Stop trying to make scroaned happen. It's not going to happen.
I think you just scroaned
They scroaned quite scroanifically.
That was some scroanification!
I just scroaned in my pants and there's nothing anyone can do about it!
I think its supposed to be an amalgamation of scream/groaned...probably made up just between this group of friends.
I’ve never heard that.
yeah, back then slang was more isolated, not all of it traveled across the globe, if it was on TV however, everyone said it. I remember using slang that only the people in my neighborhood used.
What the fucks a scroan? I saw the video, but scroan?
People here are suggesting she just made it up. I get it. She's streets ahead.
We used "scrogged" in the 80's, in the Marines. It meant "to have relations"..lol
I remember scrogged or something like it
"Scroaned" is the only word I have not used.
Until now.
Scroaned is fetch af.
I'd love to "scroan" those beach babes.
Getting vertical, in a tubular pipe
RIP MCA
And Jam Master J
From Brooklyn
No Sleep 'Til
I roll onto my side. Being old sucks
But that’s just…the way I normally talk
Seriously, everyone else can get scroaned.
Cool man, no sweat
I still say rad and dope
That’s rad, yo!
I forgot how cool the word rad sounded. I'm going to start putting it back in my vocabulary.
Yo souped?
Isn't dope making a come back? I'm pretty sure I heard some kids use it the other day.
I’ve heard Dope my entire life.
Starting with Outkast “2 Dope Boys in a Cadillac” and semi-recently the movie “Dope.”
I think it’s been a mainstay in my life, so I can’t call it a comeback.
Dope is apparently a telltale sign of millennials for Gen Z
Tiddies
Never went away, it seems.
Far out.
I prefer a proper ’radical’. Maybe even a ‘totally’, if the situation calls.
A few unnecessary syllables always helps elongate the awkwardness while adding a chefs kiss to the cringe factor.
Too much sauce on the tacos homie feel it back for class ☝️
Isn't that MCA?
And Mike D. And AD Rock.
KICK IT
You wake up late for school, man you don't want to go
You ask your mom “please?” But she still says “No.”
I'm almost positive those 3 had something in common...
Sure is
Haha the Beasties shitting on West Coast slang is the best thing I've seen in a long time 🤣
Dude still gets used.
I’m not your dude, fam
I'm not your fam, bruh
I’m not your bruh, brah.
I feel like 80s slang is cemented in English. Cool and dude will always be used.
scroaned is like fetch. it didn't happen
It was streets ahead.
So gnarly.
I wonder if they sounded as annoying to the older generation then as Gen Z’s sound to us?
Absolutely. I remember plenty of stuff in the newspaper where they 'translated' it for parents
There’s a story that when they tried to make the original Bill and Ted movie the studios wouldn’t go for it as they didn’t believe West Coast kids actually spoke like B&T. Then they heard some of the kids friends and went for it.
Bodacious!
I still used that too!
I have never heard someone use bodacious in a non sarcastic way.
Hahaaaa I totally do it! Most probably want me to stop, but I rather not.
I have never heard "bodacious" unless immediately followed by "tatas."
"Scroaned"
Are we not supposed to use these words anymore?
Nah dude its cool.
Fuck I’m old
She was getting scroaned on the reg
audi 5000, G
Word
RIP MCA
What, no “Choice” or it’s long form “Chawesome”?
I still say all of this
Even "scroaned"?
lol I literally just rewatched this and thought “I guess I’ve never said scroaned or souped” but I’m going to start now
I was the boss man's son and we got pretty stoked on each other. But she was cranked on BMWs and Rolexes and the old white picket fence. She guzzled the right brewski and draped the fresh threads. We sizzled and slashed top-to-bottom for a while but the wipeout came hard and we were both dogged bad.
Run DMC & The Beastie Boys! Pure legends!👍👍❤️
I still speak like this and I was born in 86
Don't forget "bad". Bad meant good.
Wicked also means good.
So bad language is good language and the Wicked witch is the good witch.
Dopey in the seven dwarves is also the best one.
I still talk east coast slang… no cap on god
This is definitely more of surfer and California slang- Valley girl stuff. But i definitely said a lot of these way back then
Ace!
I don’t care how old I get I’m still using this decades slang!
Do the kids today who use “like” too much, understand that it came from valley girl talk in the 80s? Same with vocal fry.
I think overusing "like" predated the Valley Girls; it was a big part of hippie speak in the 60's and 70's.
You might be right about that. Also “man” was a big hippie speak iirc.
I think Valley Girl kind grew out of the California surfer/hippie lingo.
I grew up in the NYC area, so we didn't ever full-on adopt the Val-speak thing. I don't think I ever heard anyone say "gag me with a spoon" or "bitchin'" non-ironically. However, my husband (who is from the same town as me) was a skater in high school, and I remember he and his friends definitely talked more California-esque than the rest of us.
Now I live in Massachusetts, which I believe is the one place where "wicked" was adopted into the local accent wholeheartedly by everyone. We still say "it's wicked hot out!"
I still use over half this slang today
Run DMC was speaking my language.
RIP J
Having said that slang was very regional.
I'm a nerd so my slang was stuff like ub3r l33t and such.
In the 1980s? I was pretty nerdy, and I don’t remember anyone using l33tspeak before like 1992ish.
more early 90s but k-rad. Like 1024 x rad
"Scroaned" was the 80s version of 2024's "skibidi rizz". A few will use it for a short time, but in the grand scheme of language, it will never be widely adopted.
I still hear people using "dope", "chillin", and even the occasional "rad".
“Skibidi rizz” is a thing that people all over the world have heard. Absolutely no one heard anyone say “scroaned” beyond those two girls on that beach.
Missed the point. I'm saying that skibidi rizz will last just as long as scroaned did. It won't be widely adopted like "dope", "chillin", and even the occasional "rad" has been in every day language. It's just extreme youngster zoomer speak for kids that think they derived their own language their parents won't understand. As with every single generation before them has done.
Missed the point. I'm saying that skibidi rizz will last just as long as scroaned did.
Skibidi rizz has already lasted quite a bit longer than “scroaned” did. Because “scroaned” was not a thing that anyone ever said. It wasn’t “the 1980s version” of anything, because it was exactly nothing. This video is the first and last anyone ever heard this non-word.
Also in the 90s.
It's funny how a lot of these probably seemed unnatural and weird at the time but sort of became normal vocab. I use a lot of this slang all the time. Makes me wonder what new 2024 slang is going to become integrated into the English language in 20 or 30 years.
I grew up in Southern California in the 80s. People who overdid it with their slang were seen as too conformist. The song "Valley Girl" is really making fun of it.
Also, they forgot "bitchen."
Where ?
I always enjoy watching older videos like this from the 80s/90s. The low resolution and lighting, that is exactly how I imagine life was visually. I was born in '88, so grew up in the 90s and know it wasn't washed out coloring like this, but that is how my mind plays it out watching these.

Did someone post this up in response to that Gen Alpha kid interpreting current kid slang?
Most of this is how I still talk. I grew up in the late 80s and 90s though. All new slang since about 2005 sounds like gibberish to me.
Everyone who understands this did you take your Wednesday pills
I kinda feel bad for the people who didn't get to live in those times, crazy to think there are people in their mid 20's right now who never even seen the 90's but hey, time doesn't stop for nobody.
I use those all just turned 40. I had 2 older brothers are were pretty rad
Lol literally right above this post in my feed was a gen alpha kid explaining brain rot slang
Everyone forgot about "cajh". Short for casual. "Stay cajh, bro!"
I remember saying "dud" in elementary school! Hearing her say it brought back some memories!
Love that Run DMC is the originator of a lot of the lingo
Very specifically Los Angeles/San Fernando Valley slang
We were fangin in my old datto when we got pulled by a D in a plainwrap, Gibbo legged it ‘cause he was holding some buddah in his dacks that he’d scored from some dodgy crusty outside the rissole, so JJ went on a rant about his lack of solidarity and i ended up getting done for BAC.
Peak mid 80’s for where I lived.
Is that Michael Scott at the beginning???
Funnily ironic to hear the New Yorkers spitting the west coast words.
The east coast words are better. ; )
The words the white people used are awful, the words the black guys used are dope
I grew up in the 80s and no.
2 missing replies
"Scroaned" is the only word I have not used.
