If anyone is wondering who is going to release the new photo then it is Daniel A. Edwards. He is about to release a never before seen photo of Billy in Silver City. He states the photo is crystal clear and does not require speculation. It has been independently and objectively confirmed by modern facial recognition experts. Hollywood have reportedly taken an interest. The only issue at the moment is the delay. You can see it on the Billy the Kid: An Autobiography Facebook Page. The presentation will be live and free if you would like to see it when it’s released. I think it’s the reason why there are a lot of upcoming movies based on the Kids life. The publicity is going to be big.

I was hoping for Billy the Kid stories.
About the only thing I have about Bill is that I work across the street from one of the preserved log cabins that were in the neighborhood he grew up in. Unfortunately there's no way to know if he actually lived in the one that got preserved, but there's a decent chance he at least spent time in it as a kid.

But how does he know the second photo is actually of Billy the Kid? If he's only comparing it to the one posted here, that doesn't help, because there's been a lot on questions raised about the provenance of the photo and the actual identity of the young guy in it. It's not like we had an actual mug shot of him with his signature.
Provenance is key, not saying his legit but you can get pretty close to 100% with some images. It's probably a Daguerreotype, and they almost always have a studio mark and/or photographers name on the back, guns and clothes can be dated, if there are companions in the image who are known subjects, where was the image found and the history of the original owner/family and several more methods/checks...
The Smithsonian has dated some daguerreo's by their chemical process

I'm struggling to name a second one, though I'm sure there are a couple of others that could be mentioned that I'd be aware of - there are certainly kids who do famous things, but we forget them for better or worse.

My dad was a huge old west history buff and growing up, I got to read a ton of books about it.
A lot of these guys were lawless, ruthless motherfuckers, but in Henry's case he had a really shitty early life where he had to do what he could to survive and honestly killed people who either
A) deserved it

B) to save himself.
I mean, of all the outlaws Billy the Kid is the weirdest one to make that argument. He wasn't a cold killer like Jesse James. His early crimes were crimes of survival, and the Lincoln County war was a political situation more than anything, and I'd hesitate to call the Dolan faction, who supported most of the people Henry McCarty (Billy) killed, anything but the worse faction.

I saw Young Guns II, a highly historically accurate documentary, so I know Billy the Kid survived to tell his story as 'Brushy Bill' Roberts and didn't die until 1950. He also loved Bon Jovy.

In the late 70's, I was working in radio in Portales, NM and was asked to do a public affairs program for Sunday mornings. I decided to interview the couple I bought eggs from. She told me that she had known Billy the Kid and Sheriff Garret when she was small. She said Billy the Kid was a sharp dresser and had an eye for the ladies.
Her husband showed me the saddle of the horse he rode into NM Territory on from Texas. They were both over 100 years old.

That entire area is a fascinating treasure. I’ve spent quite a lot of time (unfortunately) in Fort Sumner. But being able to go from a graveyard holding gravestones from the 1800’s to BtK’s grave along with all the other amazing historical treasures in the are is just amazing. I’ll admit Portales was an escape for us when we were there.

I got dumped by a girl who was in the Seminole Tribe when ancestry DNA revealed that I was related to President Andrew Jackson… as he was in part responsible for the Trail of Tears.
She didn’t care that I was also part Cherokee (confirmed via DNA) and had direct descendants who died on said Trail of Tears (as cross referenced with the DNA and surviving records).
It was on the surreal side, like, “But… why?” Yet, funny. I’d never been judged so hard over something I had nothing to do with.
On the flip side, it’s quite amazing to learn about family history. We often identify so strongly with the bloodline we share our namesakes with but genealogy is so much more complicated that that.
So far I’ve gone back roughly 28 generations with a single line- and I’ve even traced separate ancestral lines from both my maternal and paternal sides to the exact same villages in Scotland- with people who actually knew and worked with each-other! How wild is that?

The amount of kidnappings in history is astonishing. It used to be super normal. My paternal great grandfather and his two older brothers were basically kidnapped by the Austrian government and Catholic Church so they could be baptized as “illegitimates”. He's taking one of the only photos of his life, and he probably barely knows what his facial expressions are like, causing him to look a bit goofy. The first thing I noticed was the facial trauma. He's probably had his nose and face busted multiple times. Looks like his brow bone has been shattered, as well as his jaw. He lived a rowdy life and probably got into several violent altercations. I wonder if his demeanor was affected by brain damage towards the end of his life. To the people saying he looks "stupid" or "inbred", really need to make a trip to the Courthouse in New Mexico where he's from and was held and famously shot his way out of. Inside they have letters which he wrote to the Lincoln County Judge asking for leniency because he was acting in self defense during the Lincoln County wars. He's very intelligent, and very literate and I was surprised how well he wrote and came off as in those letters.

This pic was taken at a town fair after Billy had JUST come off of weeks on the trail. It’s why he looks so dirty and beat up. Billy’s girlfriend Paulita provided these details after Billy’s death, and confirmed it was Billy. She also said this pic was absolutely NOT representative of how Billy actually looked, stating it was a terrible pic of Billy. Paulita described Billy as blonde haired, very good looking, always smiling and had laughing/twinkling blue eyes. Billy also was right handed- NOT left handed (assumed for years as the tintype image was flipped), and the 21 men in 21 years myth is BS- Billy killed “only” nine men that we know of, and it’s doubtful he killed any more than that. Billy’s reputation as a bloodthirsty robber and bushwhacker is fairly undeserved- Billy is a tragic figure, and the most misunderstood character in Old West lore. If interested, do some research on his story. Billy only got one break in his hardluck life (meeting Tunstall), and it was snatched from him in horrible fashion. It’s also why he became the famous outlaw. The croquet pic allegedly of Billy cannot be verified by experts due to multiple issues with the image. I have seen one other pic of Billy with Tom O’Folliard that I am certain is Billy and Tom, but again has not been authenticated.
