As a non-smoker, does every smoker smell bad to you?
Removed: Trolling/Joke IVYes, you smell. It would be rude to mention it to you so people don’t. But they can tell when you enter a room without looking
As I non smoker who has only smoked one cigarette in my life, I like the smell of cigarette smoke and cigar smoke. Smokers themselves smell bad because the smoke is stale.
Before they enter the room, and we also know they've been in a space for a long time after they've left.
Absolutely. And I can tell from a fair distance. Hell a lot of the time I can tell a smoker was in the room in the past several hours. And yes it is bad.
Switched to vaping a couple years ago… I cannot believe how much sense of smell I’ve regained, and I feel so awful about everyone I subjected to my constant ciggy smell for years. I feel like I can smell a whole new world I didn’t even know existed.
Just... I mean, congratulations to you, but for reference, we don't want you vaping near us, either. And yes we can still tell.
Agree. Actually vapers can fuck off too
People are being polite. You stink.
Dad told me that, when I was about 3 years old, I crawled up in his lap and said, "Daddy, you stink." He put them down that day and never smoked again.
If you smoke regularly, you become nose blind to it. I don't spend much time around people who smoke, but I can definitely tell when someone does.
yeah, pretty much. To me, smokers either smell like smoke or like smoke plus cologne and breath mints.
This 🌲🌲🌲
As an ex smoker, yes. Odor blindness is a real thing.
My ex smoked. Kissing her was a dismal experience, I'm sure she saw me grimace so took to sucking mints after a cigarette. Minty cigarette breath is even worse.
Like licking an ashtray
Exactly. Not that I've ever licked an ash tray, but I am willing to bet, it tastes exactly like kissing a smoker.
I am an ex smoker and every single smoker stinks like shit. Its the grossest thing. Everytime I see one in the wild I am astounded by it. I say out loud because im nuts "people still smoke?"
Same here. Its nice that we've come so far that seeing smokers these days makes us doble take.

Same here. I’m also an ex-smoker. Smoking killed both my parents at a relatively young age, so it smells like death to me.
For smoker here also, smokers stink, bad.
Fellow former smoker. Can verify
passed
usapublicschool.exe
Yes, their breath stinks and they don’t even notice it. It’s disgusting.
Yes. And gum isn't helping.
Yes absolutely. It's always amazing to me that smokers can't tell that they generally smell awful.
Smoker’s breath literally smells like death. It’s the worst smell ever.
Yes
Yes. It's funny how quick you get used to smells though and vice versa. When I was young my Dad smoked and it was just something you were used to. He hasn't smoked for years now and none of the family smokes either. Was at the dentist the other week and someone walked in and they absolutely stunk of cigarettes. Weren't even next to me and they'd been in the room for 5 seconds and it filled the room. Awful smell. So glad that smoking has been banned in pretty much every indoor area in the UK now.
Even if you smoke outside, I can still smell it from the clothes and often from the breath hours later from like 2 meters away. I wouldn't want to date a girl that smokes, just smells disgusting tbh, but thats just personal preference.
Yes.
I have never smoked, I can always smell it on people. Cologne/perfume doesn't help and you can smell it on people's breath as well.
I haven't felt the smell of cigarettes on someone in a very long time,
Because you've become 'nose-blind' to that particular odor. It's still there, you just can't notice it.
I remember it from childhood and it was disgusting.
Still is.
I don't smoke inside and noone has mentioned it so far.
Because they're being polite. If you smoke, you stink. Smoking outside just limits the spread so that it's just you that stinks, not the whole house. Sorry to be blunt, but this is info you should know.
Yes. You smell bad to non-smokers. And don’t you know that shit will kill you? Why do people even start smoking now??
Idk mostly start as teenagers and think they will quit later, but just cant quit it
Yes. It's disgusting and repellent.
You smell disgusting and everyone talks about it when you walk away. As a ex smoker the feeling range from pity
I quit about a month ago . Yes I can smell them , and yes it’s unpleasant mostly. Deodorant/perfume mix with the tobacco smell and somehow make it worse
Yes, you smell. I’ve never not smelled a smoker. And I used to smoke.
Yes they reek. You can always tell, their clothes, their breath and often I'm convinced they sweat it but doubt that's possible!
Hey, I legit sweat the flavourings of certain cheap roast chicken crisps/potato chips, and curry sweat is a known thing, so it wouldn't surprise me if smokers sweat had a stale smoke smell to it.
You might be right!
I bet it does! Lots of stuff gets passed through our sweat glands. Sweating Cigarettes sounds like the grossest band name ever.
P.s. I’ve got to tell you I would follow you into the bowels of hell if you smell like roast chicken chips. I have to order them from Walkers because I’m in the US.
Sometimes I see people smoking in their cars on their way to work and I feel bad for their coworkers who have to deal with the smoker stink in a place they can't escape from.
Yes. And when I visit the house of a smoker, I have to wash my clothes afterwards. The stink gets in everything.
In my experience being around people, if you smoke more than 1 cigarette a day, the smell is very noticeable and bad.
The person I know who only smokes one a day doesn't smell overwhelmingly like smoke.
Yes. Even with the amount of care you clearly take, it is obvious to others. The fact that you can’t tell it about other people or yourself means you have gone ‘nose deaf’ (yes, it’s an oceans 11 reference).
I have to have a really good reason to be friends with a smoker. Not only do you smell bad, but it is actually unhealthy to breathe the air that surrounds you. People with sensitive health conditions actually have real reason to fear your 2nd hand and 3rd hand smoke
Yes.
I can almost deal with it whilst they’re smoking, but for some reason it’s 10x worse when someone has just finished smoking and walks into a room or gets in the car . This smell of stale smoke totally surrounds them for and good 5-6 feet around them. It’s VERY noticeable for anyone who doesn’t smoke and honestly grosses me out just as much as BO .
I can always tell if I've walked past a smoker and it horrifies me to think I smelt like that for over 20 years. I just didn't know.
Yeah folk are being polite. It smells strong and bad and it LINGERS.
As a doctor who works in the ER, smokers smell as bad as homeless people do.
100%
This is an exact copy of a post from a few weeks ago.
Oh yeah. They absolutely do.
Yes
Yes. Even the 'secret' smokers who think they don't also smell like a stale ashtray too
I wouldn't know because I rarely come across any.
Yes, I’m afraid.
Yes. It doesn’t matter how good your hygiene is. We can smell it.
As a former smoker, yes they smell pretty bad
I can generally tell someone is a smoker 10 feet away.
Never met a person that did not hate second hand smoke. Yes, fron 30 feet.
Absolutely. And even if you don’t smoke in the house, I guarantee I can tell you are a smoker.
Smokers reek. Every single bodily function is disgustifyed by smoking. Their skin stinks. Their hair stinks. Their clothes stink. Their breath stinks, from the depths of their lungs. The things they touch stink. Their homes and offices stink. It's a disgusting habit for disgusting people.
Yes, and their hair, clothes, car, house. Even if you don't smoke in the spaces, you smoke, it's on your clothes, skin, hair, then you go in the spaces.
Yes, and triggers a migraine too!
Is that bullshit, from a physiological point?
People get migraines from strong scents all the time, It's not a secret?? I remember my mom took me to one of those Scentsy parties (those light bulb things that melt scented wax, it was like the Mary Kay of its time lol) and I got a huge migraine and felt sick.
Holy shit what a bunch of crap.
You have never experienced anything close to a migraine.
I can tell - at least I think I can tell, I guess if I can't tell I wouldn't know. There's a possibility I can just tell when the person smokes inside or doesn't wash their clothes.
it smells very bad to me.
Yes.
The smok itself doesn't bother me as long as it's not directly in my face or in a close area.
Cold smell, on clothes, for example: yurk. Especially breath or car smell. And taking mint pills just make it worse.
And if you smoke and live in an apartment, I beg you, don't smoke in your bathroom/toilets! The smell spread by plumbing and it's awful.
Cigarettes smell really bad but I don’t care vape smell!
Being around smokers, it's weird, sometimes it's overpowering other times not really noticable. It's possible that the weather has something to do with it, like when it's very humid the smoke smell clings more or something. I also smoked, and quit, and found myself way more bothered by the smell after I quit than before I started smoking.
Yes
Yes
No one will mention it to you because no one wants to be rude. But everyone can absolutely smell it. I can tell exactly which coworkers of mine smoke because the smell is terrible. One of my coworkers that I have to work closely with reeks. I feel bad but I have to hold my breath when she gets physically close to me to show me something. It was especially terrible when I was pregnant and would make me feel nauseous.
Every smoker nowadays swears the same thing, "I don't even smell" and it's like, naw fam. You smell like cigarettes. A whole lot like it.
Absolutely. Even when not smoking, I can smell them a ways away. It clings to clothes and hair and skin, after all.
Yes, so gross. Smells like old wet ashtray.
Yes
Yes.
Yes
As an ex smoker, yes, you always smell like smoke.
People don't mention it because they know there's no point or because they don't care. If you have generally good hygiene and wear clean clothes daily, the smell might not be too offensive to most. But even then, everyone smells it if they get anywhere close to you.
When I was growing up with my parents, who were both smokers, I couldn't smell it. Got through my undergrad, smoking was still allowed everywhere at that time so I still couldn't smell it. In grad school, that's when indoor bans started. After grad school, I'd been away from home for about five years and I went home to see my parents. I couldn't take it, their house and cars smelled so bad.
It killed my father. And my mother-in-law. My mother quit a few years ago, so far she's ok.
Yes, I used to be a smoker and was surprised by how bad I smelled.
Yes and its gross and unhealthy.
Pretty much
I quit smoking almost 6 months ago, after twenty years. The smell was a driving factor in quitting. Came inside from smoking one night, and the smell just hit me.
Absolutely. I was at a self check out last week at the grocery store, I could smell the guy at the register across from my check out line. I almost gagged.
Smokers smell worse than cancer tumors to me.
Yes. Cigarettes, cigars, etc. Stink and the odors not only cling to the smoker, they spread to nonsmokers with whom you have close contact. I used to have smokers in my family. After greeting them with a hug the stench was on me as well.
I can smell the one guy across the intersection smoking in his car while traffic zooms past between us. Yes, y'all stink.
yeah, it’s gross. the worst are people who think they’re offsetting it somehow with perfume. Just makes a more piercing and lingering offensive odor
Yea they smell like gtfo with that stank
100%. I walked into a townhome where the complex banned smoking 10+ years before and you can still smell that lingering stench.
Yes, smokers smell awful. I can even smell it if a smoker has been in the room before me. E. G. A colleague of mine smokes outside. When I walk the halway he went throung that day I can smell the smoke. It smells so bad, I thought he was smoking in his office, but it is not the case, it's just how much he smokes and the smoke lingers on him and radiates from him even after the cigarette has been put out.
I would rather be trapped in an elevator with a homeless man who hasn't showered in 67 days than be trapped with a smoker.
Yes.
The cologne or perfume does not mask it, it mixes with it. Even if they do it outside only, hair clothes stink. The things they touch stink.
You can’t smoke without smelling like smoke.
Yes
Yup
Yes. I can sometimes notice as soon as they walk into the room
Yes. Yes, they do. It permeates everything.
Yes
Smoked for 20+ years, quit 5 years ago.
Smokers smell sooo good..
God do I miss it.
Yeah pretty much. It obviously depends on how much they smoke, how long since their last and their hygiene but even a faint smell is pretty obvious.
If I walk pass one yes other wise Im mostly home
Definitely does smell, and most people hate it but I honestly kind of like the smell of cigarettes.
Ive noticed cigarettes have a very bad after smell. It must be something to do with the chemicals in ready made cigarettes but now if you compare rolling tobacco then its a much more pleasant smell. It will only last for about 20 odd minutes and it wont smell as strongl or as badly as normal cigarettes. Normal cgarettes give you bad breath an sticks on your clothes and fingers for a long time.
Some smell worse than others. I find people who smoke outdoors and are aware of where their smoke goes don't smell half as bad as those who smoke indoors and let their clothes fully absorb it.
Vapers smell better if they're sensible ones rather than those who like making the biggest cloud possible.
Depends on the smoke. Also, I'm not as soft, so oh well.
I certainly can smell the cigarettes but as an 80s baby it has an oddly nostalgic effect on me.
I currently work with a couple of smokers, and honestly I can only really smell it on them when they’ve come in from a smoke break. Smells pretty bad then, but otherwise I personally never really notice it. I know it’s not the same for everybody though.
Yep
Yes
the smell does get on you. i used to smoke and my fingers and hair would always smell. my uncle also smoked and every time he opened his backpack it was a mixture of his cologne and cigarettes. i personally don't think is a nasty/disgusting smell but it is easily recognizable, overpowering and may be a turn off for some people.
You can spot smokers just by looking at them.
There is actually one brand of smokes that don't smell that bad, I don't know what brand, but it's a red packaging. But yes I know just by walking by that someone's a smoker.
As a former smoker(15 years smoker and 10 years clean) I can now smell a smoker from across the room. And yes they smell gross. However I still love the smell of a cigarette wafting past me in my direction.
Most of my family has died of cancer and/or complications from COPD. I am somehow the only family member who never smoked.
So, yes, every smoker smells bad to me... like sickness and death.
I can smell it, but depending on the brand they smoke and their personal hygiene, it doesn't smell bad. Camels Marlboros don't smell bad. Jackets and other unwashed clothing can start to accumulate a stale smoke smell, I don't like that. Especislly if they smoke with others and brands mix. It's like a dive bar or bowling ally with poor ventilation.
Only smoker who ever smelled good to me was my brother. You are not an exception lol
As a former smoker, I can’t stand the smell of a person who smokes. Strangely, sometimes if I get a whiff of the actual smoke I like it.
Both my parents are heavy smokers so I'm used to it. What I never understood was why they never wash their hands when they finish
As a cigarr and pipe smoker. We stink … only time it “smells good” is when I smoke pipe tobacco and people gets reminded of their grandpa..
Along with cigarette smoke I’m surprised by the number of individuals who reek of weed when I’m out. Since marijuana became legal in my state I frequently encounter people smelling like they just smoked it. I have to imagine like cigarette smoke odor, the users don’t perceive it as strongly as those who are not smoking.
Even when they don't smoke in my car when I give them a ride, my car smells like smoke several hours later...
Oh and, the smell on your clothes the next day when you visit someone who does. Disgusting.!
Cigarettes smell terrible however I will admit I quite enjoy the smell of some aromatic pipe tobacco and cigars.
There has only been one smoker that i didnt smell. She quit a while back but ill merry her next year. For some reason she didnt smell bad or when we kissed didnt taste like an ashtray.
No idea if it was just hormones blocking it all but i know she did her best ti hide those sides of smoking as well.
Oo there was one thing i hated, her hand. The hand she used to smoke with smelled horrible. I guess she forgot about that haha
Depends on how much they smoke and where.
I used to smoke and I know that if I was smoking outside with a light breeze and brushed my teeth and rinsed my gf at the time didn't notice.
But I never smoked that much while I was dating someone. Maybe a couple a day.
When I wasn't smoking, but dating a woman who did, I noticed a lot, but not all the time.
Really depends on home much you do to mitigate the smell. But it's not easy to shower or brush your teeth multiple times a day.
putrid, toxic, & vile, etc...
I only really smell my dad right after he smokes. A few minutes later and I can’t tell anymore.
Yes. I still remember the smell of the guy who worked three desks away from mine while I was pregnant. Made me nauseous.
I never knew how bad I smelled until today quit smoking two years ago and my sense of smell came back
It isn’t good but I find the smell of weed worse. Especially living in Las Vegas, the entire city reeks of it
Yes yes yes yes yes! Even if you smoked a week ago I can tell. Tobacco gives me migraines. You stink
Yes, disgusting
100%
Cigarette smokers stink, but I've been told I smell pretty good, im an occasional cigar smoker.
you smell like an ash tray. it’s on your clothes, your hair, and in your car. people smell you when they cross paths with you.
YES! Sometimes YES
Yes. They stink to high heaven. It’s literally enough to make you puke 🤮
Yes
Yes. When you have the smoke in your clothes. It’s not nice. Especially when on public transit or small room. You make the room smell like old stale smoke. Smoke down wind and air out before you enter a crowded area. Please. It’s the stale smoke trapped in your clothes and hair. The fresh smoke not as much. I know because I used to be a smoker.
Bothers some, and is a beacon for others looking bum a smoke.
Oh yeah
Yes, clothes, hair and breath
Absolutely. I'm an insurance broker, usually dealing in auto insurance. After every smoker we usually have to vent the office out. Our office is small, like 300sqft or so, and the stench lingers long if we don't open the doors
Yeah they have a stank
Yes and so do everyone who does weed. You all fucking stink and no, it doesn't disappear your clothes stink.
Yes.
A guy sat next to me on a bus once. I'll never forget how bad his breath was.
Yup. Also smoke travels! When I’m out in nature I can absolutely smell that shit from half a mile away.
Yes. You smell like an ashtray.
You can smell cigarette smoke from across the street, it’s nasty.
Yes, very unpleasant
Why is this exact question posted so constantly?
It's clear and obvious and gross, and people who smoke quickly lose the ability to detect how strong it is.
I find it funny when smokers use a mint, or spray themselves with cologne and think that's enough.
Bro, you're going to need to quit, take every piece of "clean" clothing you own and clean them on hot cycle like 3 times, clean every surface in your house, then put the clothes back. And it'll STILL be detectable by non-smokers, it just won't be as offensive.
There is a drive-through pharmacy near my house, and there is a smoking area outside about 200 feet away. If I roll down my window at the pharmacy, I can tell if there is a smoker on break within 2-3 seconds just by the air blowing by.
Yes. Sorry. It's really really bad. I'm glad you don't smoke in your home, at least, but you definitely still reek like cigarettes.
My first leather jacket was my Uncle's old one. My mom made me leave it in the garage for a month to get rid of the cigarette smell.
Yes.
You smell disgusting. If you smoke in your car it smells. Same with your house. If you smoke around your children they smell.
As an added bonus it will probably kill you prematurely and the death will be a long painful one.
yes
Yes, their breath smells awful all the time, not just when they smoke
I stopped smoking cigarettes, six years ago, and I still love the smell of them lol.
Non-smokers always know who the smokers are. Even if you haven't smoked recently the smell clings to your clothes and vehicle and home. I smoked for 15 years, and about 2 years after I quit I could finally smell smokers and I felt horrible for all my girlfriends that put up with that because now I honestly don't think I could date a smoker now.
Everyone should stop overreacting. Smoking is bad for health and whatever but it doesn't smell that terrible. It's smoke and not hot garbage for god's sake
Yes it’s the worst, even if someone hasn’t smoked that day and had a shower. Your clothes and car probably have a faint smoke smell. My patients that smoke always set off my allergies as well
Yes, you stink.
I wonder the same about weed smoke. I smoke a bong outdoors and I usually change hoodies and spray some cologne on my way out of the house, especially in social situations, but I'm always curious if I stink or how noticable it is on me. Blunt smokers and joint smokers stink stink I think because the weed basically smolders, vs a bong hit which burns it quickly and the smoke is then gone and away.
I usually can tell a smoker
Ain't much worse than the cigarette+espresso breath. I still shudder when i remember my old history teacher from high school reeking. She had a tendency to get into people's personal space...
Yeah, cigarette smell on people is very noticeable and very oftem unpleasant, esp. when mixed with other smells, like coffee, sweat, bad dental hygiene, stinky clothes.
Just to put it into perspective of how bad cigarettes smell: When I'm driving i can tell by the smell that the person in the car infront of me is smoking even in the wintertime with my windows up. Enough gets through with the heater. Even if the car is almost out of sight up the road. The worst is when i smoker tries to use a bunch of perfume to try and cover the smell but it just makes it way worse. It just makes a horrible mixture of smells thats unbearable
Yes. The smell actually hurts my throat. My dad was a chain smoker since he was a teenager and now he is 59. When I see him to this day, it hits me.
As a two cigarette a weekday smoker, I don't, but my car dose
The reason I say I don't is because I was having a stressful day at work and pulled my pack out in front of all my non smoking co worker, my father included, and they looked absolutely! Stunned.
I also smoke American spirits so ... It's a better as quality of tobacco.
So I think it depends on what they smoke how often and we're
Yes. I work with peoples passwords. I want to puke everytime i hold a passport of a chainsmoker in my hands because it just fucking reeks so bad. People arent much different. Yuck
I commute via bike. I had a car pull up next to me at a light. I could have sworn they were currently smoking and blowing it in my direction. I thought “how rude” and turned to peek at the driver through their open windows. She was not smoking. Her car just stunk so badly of smoke that I could smell it from the bike line. Imagine what she smells like walking into a store or a restaurant.
So yes, people can smell you from while a long distance away.
For sure especially in small enclosed spaces like an elevator or car
Yes
The previous owners of my house were smokers, and they had quit a few years prior to me purchasing the home. I have been here just shy of 6 years. On a hot day I can still smell cigarettes in the house, and tar seeps from the walls. Of course someone smoking daily stinks. That stuff lingers and it hard to get out of fabric, and in my case, walls.
I used to work at the Apple Store and we had a guy who would chain smoke on his 15 and then would help people at the Genius Bar. He had so many complaints from customers
of course some shameless ones smoke on my face
It smells gross. It was gross smelling as a kid (my mom smokes) and it's grosser now that I am not exposed to it on a regular basis. I hate hanging my coat next to smoker's coat on a rack because the stale smell of smoke transfers. Less of a problem now that it's used to be with vaping being so popular.
Yup.
Yes.
To be blunt, you stink. I can smell you from far away. The scent of smoke lingers in every room you're in.
I grew up around cigarette smoke and will never touch one. I don't want those cancer sticks anywhere near me.
I'll get my cancer from somewhere else, thanks.
I have colleagues who smoke and make sure I don't hang my coat next to theirs, because they smell.
I smell it on them when they come back from smoking. I notice it, I find it disgusting, do I say anything about it. Of course not.
Unfortunately I love the smell for whatever reason lol. No one in my family smokes and neither do I, never taken a puff but whenever I smell it on someone or someone near me is smoking I cant help but sniff the air around me, i have the samething with gasoline. I just find the smells so good and I can't explain why lol
I've always loved the smell of second hand smoke itself but on clothes it's a no go.
Congrats. you are the one millionth person to ask this on reddit!
Reddit will always give you an aggressive "Yes and it makes me want to puke, I can always tell" when you ask this question, but they're wrong. This is a classic example of a toupee falacy. Obviously no, not every smoker smells like cigarettes.
The real answer is that it depends on how long your hair is, how your oral hygiene is, whether you smoke inside, and whether you wear the same clothes in which you smoke, when's the last time you smoked, etc.
Not a smoker, before someone tells me that I'm in denial or some other stupid garbage.
As Uber/Bolt driver and smoker I get loooots of feedback on this topic from non-smokers and smokers as well.
It really depends what are you smoking and what your hygiene habits are like. I am mostly praised for nice odour in my car, although I occasionally do cig inside car and I smoke like pack of red Marlborough a day. But as you can see, I smoke quality tobacco and in addition to that I use deodorant to my body, hygienic wet tissues to clean my hands and face (I spray myself every two to three hours and wipe my face, moustache and hands once or twice via 12 hour shift) also I spray car interior and use car fresheners as addition and vacuum my car every two or three days. I am also keen on changing my clothes in normal frequency.
TL-DR humans with good hygiene smoking quality tobacco do not smell ;)
