From that same show, our state has received praise for our ballot initiatives (the ability to do them); independent redistricting panel, protection of the right to choose what happens to your body, and early voting access. All ballot initiatives. All democratic wins from the votes of the people who showed up.

This is a better representation of our state. Not a single business, library, county commission, or church. And definitely not a private political party or NGO.

The praise is usually a single comment in the show as John Oliver focuses on using anger to educate.

Well what it is, is more of an entrenched older population that owns all the homes; and aren’t going anywhere, who vote and control all the establishments, combined with a younger crowd that wants to move in cause of the colleges, and generally nicer place to live, but can’t afford housing; and such. And as a result the DeVos and Meijer family still run the fucking place, while everyone else just kinda deals.

Ann Arbor is similar, but without the conservative governance. So they get their own issues of incompetence. (I live outside Ann Arbor and don’t get a say)

My wife grew up in GR, and one of her brothers and step mom still live there so I’ve gotten the jist of it over the last 20 years.

We moved to Ann Arbor area in 07, and bought a house in the next town over in 09. And still deal a lot with it. I’m good friends with teachers, pot store workers, and everything in between so I would get all the dumb things they do, and did.

It’s just a general feeling of we need to stop electing incompetent people to lead us. I would try and sign up, but my past is waaay to checkered to want to face half the people that don’t like me just based on which team I would sign up for.

I haven’t really taken a deep dive in ypsi. Some of it is really nice some of it is super sketchy. I haven’t actually felt “unsafe” there, even leaving bars at 2am back in the day when shit was tough for everyone.

Dexter is ‘Norman Rockwell’ central, with far too many trumpers and racists… but it’s got a kickass school system.

I’m getting into Brighton more, because it’s equidistant from my place to Ann Arbor. I haven’t seen enough to truly comment.

Saline is probably more racist than Dexter, and I don’t spend a ton of time there.

Chelsea, is probably just the middle child of all these suburbs. Not remarkable. Just does its thing. Tries to be cool. Etc. but it’s got its shitty points too.

It's a liberal city in a conservative county, with suburbs in an off-the-deep-end crazy county. That's why it feels weird. Major cities usually dominate county/regional politics but GR doesn't (except electing Scholten, with the help of Muskegon and crazies booting Peter freaking Meijer in the primary.)

Kent County went blue the last presidential election so I wouldn’t really call it a conservative county anymore. Suburbs like EGR have been quite blue for a while, and Kentwood has too. Similar to the trends of the rest of the country, a lot of the surrounding suburbs either went more blue or less red in recent years. I hope this trend continues.

Yeah, that's absolutely true (Whitmer also won Kent, both times). The county is trending blue, and if anyone tried a "Kent Impact", Democrats would control the county. So the Republicans in Kent County are generally pretty sane, which keeps them in power.

The County Commission and County-wide offices are up again this year, so we'll see what happens. Dems need two seats to flip the County Commission, and for County-wide, it's all about ticket splitters (Republicans won every office the past two cycles despite Dems winning at the top of the ballot).

Grand Rapids is also a place where the rural kids who really need to get out of their rural homes and move somewhere that'll accept them tend to go if they get priced out of Southeast Michigan/still want a smaller city feel. And I haven't spent much time in GR either. I've been there a couple times, briefly, for work, and it all feels like a Potemkin village to me, at least the downtown part. Come to think of it, its kind of similar to Washington, DC in that way (to be fair, a city I also haven't spent a ton of time in) where there are actually a couple of Washington DCs. There's the facade, the thing that people think of and react to, and then there's everyday DC, that's real, where people are living and working and breathing. Vegas is also similar in those regards, but its just so turned up to 11.

I mean there’s always been a bit of that on the West side of the state for some reason, like my Dad grew up in Manistee back in the 40’s and 50’s and I’ve been going there since the 80’s since we have family there, and up until the Internet started to take off there it was always like ten years behind the times of most of the rest of the state in trends and really pretty conservative, but like the stuff in Ottawa county feels way more hateful at least more so than what I remember of the area from my youth.

I’m in a same-sex marriage and have to say when we saw this episode I thought, “This seems worth investigating before moving. Illinois is *right there* and doesn’t have as many of these shenanigans.“

I appreciate the other notes in this thread about the good — which are far better outcomes than here in Indiana. Our next governor is likely to be a complete Red Hat come November.

But can anyone tell me anything sincere about Lake County and the northern part of the state that seems worth knowing? We genuinely worry about federal marriage protections being rescinded and having to deal with state-level protections as we age.

It’s a mixed bag. What you’ll find in Baldwin is wonderful lakes and trees and is very attractive to folks that love the outdoors. But the area of Baldwins amenities and services are dying. Lots of places are having a hard time finding employees since many from the area usually move to other larger cities. Baldwin is a small town that’s really only there to support the folks that have cottages there and nothing more other than fishing tournaments and the blessing of the bikes (which is pretty neat but it’s only once a year early summer). For eating out/shopping you’re better off 40 minutes to the west in the coast town of Ludington. As for lifestyle leanings Lake county is very much a red county; lots of Trump flags. I’m not so sure of Ludington since I’m not exactly a socialite but I’d wager is more left leaning than Baldwin is. Traverse city is also pretty left for the most part I’d say. Plus there’s a lot more to do up there. Still if you do decide to stop by Baldwin there’s a wonderful ice cream shop I highly recommend.

I appreciate you taking some time to reply. We’ve really been conflicted about this. We found a house we like — and at a price our current equity might be able to nearly wipe out. Not having a mortgage would be life-changing, and we’re weighing that against living in an area we might not love, but we’re also not sure we’d love anyplace for one reason or another.

We visited Baldwin this weekend and I can’t say I love the area. It strikes me about as what I imagined, and as you described (I grew up in a place not dissimilar). This all feels like a coin flip to me. I’d like to trust that everyone’s good in heart and spirit there, but who knows.

No problem! Ya like you said it’s a give and take kinda deal moving out here. Are you looking at a lake cottage? That’s really the most attractive thing about living around Baldwin. And I gotta say it’s a fantastic lifestyle. But then ya you have to live with the fact that you’re kinda just on your own. But hey another perk is you’re right smack dab in the middle of everything and if you say wanna drive not that far to a cozy coast town or a resort northern city or an artsy city like Grand Rapids, you’re not very far. There’s lots to do in MI as well from water sports to dune buggies and more. It’s good to know the draw backs, however, and I’d hate to see anyone feel stuck. Consider Baldwin for what it’s worth but know there’s a lot of Michigan to offer and there’s always other towns to settle in too.

As someone from the East side of the state who lived in GR for a number of years I gotta say you are asking a lot. I'm going to get down voted for this but I really didn't like it. The people were entitled, high strung, and convinced of their superiority. If you aren't Dutch/Dutch reform you might as well be invisible (if you're white, black and brown ppl are VERY visible to the cops at least.) The poverty and human suffering that is just straight up ignored - I've never seen so many wealthy people stepping over the homeless as they leave church. Flint, Ann Arbor, Detroit- these places don't just have support organizations but random help from other residents, you just don't see that out west. I'm so much happier in Flint where there is such a strong sense of community and radical support.

Then again I was a public librarian so I saw the worst of the problems but yeah, sorry west side, you kinda suck.

Also flint passed the first fair housing act in the county and had the first black mayor of a major metropolitan area post reconstruction in the 60s. White flight is more related to urban renewal and of course racism but that tide is turning backwards. My parents flighted from Detroit and Pontiac, now I live in Flint and my twin lives in Detroit.

Once again I'm talking about my personal experience in grand rapids and confirmed by years of repeating examples. For instance, the only city ive been assulted in on the street by unhoused people is Grand Rapids and it happened twice almost two years apart. I'm not commenting on or comparing the race politics or history of either city (well I didn't WANT to) I'm saying they dont take care of their most vulnerable members of society from my perspective.

And yes the unhoused in south eastern Michigan and mid Michigan aren't in great positions or situations but I 100% believe they treat the poor worse from what I've seen and heard.

Well if you get “news” from cynical, comedy shows with unabashed political bias you’re going to have a hard time. I like these shows but the brain candy can give us a lopsided view of things just as much as anything else.

In other words, good news is generally not good for “The News” no matter their format. One reason is, good news generally takes the form of dull things going right. Like area colleges increasing post graduate employment rates or new/ improved infrastructure. Those things barely break local news paper squelch. They will never be featured on cable news shows that universally rely on outrage for ratings.

The thing about LWT is that it takes 25 mins to tackle one story. So it’s long form and does a decent job of showing the other side, even if side A is the one they are in favor of. Many of the stories feel like they take the ‘real Christian’ side. Meaning hey are compassionate, human based.

If you disagree with LWT it’s probably because you think the powerful taking advantage of the meek is a good thing.
