Tried completing the connections at the relay, same result as video, tried cleaning connections on the battery same results, used jumper cables from the battery to red on starter and black on engine ground, same results, tried hitting the starter. Battery alone measured 12.8V, solenoid cranking measured 11.8V, and the starter measured 11.6V on crank... could it be the starter or am i missing something here? boat started fine a couple months ago and from what i heard marine starters are pretty much bullet proof and any starter issues 90% of the time is something other than the starter itself, Im not sure if this sub is the roght place to post but ied assume the same knowledge is applied here, Thanks
OMC Ford Cobra 2.3 Inboard Boat Engine flywheel not engaging on crank
Having the same problem on the same engine after installing a brand new starter. Were you able to fix it?
yes i did! took my starter out and used jumper cables, black to starter bolt flange and red to positive.. you can hear it whirring but the pinion didnt jump up where it would catch the flywheel, ordered a new starter for 60$ and now i get crank... got my engine to start and stay running for like 20s once.. but then she died on me.. cant seem to hold start but cleaning spark plug wires helped so still on this journey haha, best of luck brother
Thanks for the reply. Glad to hear you got it fixed. The company I ordered my starter from is going to warranty this one and send me another at no cost. As far as the engine not staying running id recommend starting with the basics. Make sure you have clean fuel. A lot of these old boats have dirty fuel tanks. Pull the fuel water separator and drain it and see what's inside it. If you have a Jerry can, try running the engine off of that to isolate the problem.
Yessir!, and that was going to be my next step! it had old gas so maybe that will help it run and solve my problem.. Currently focused on my driveway extension as a project since we are getting a 37ft camper in put inside it this sunday, but once thats done, back to focusing on the boat to get her on the water before summer is over haha
