Today was my first day solo trail running in Joshua Tree. It's my first time visiting the park. I was running the maze loop clockwise. Towards the end of the loop, at the longer flatter section, out of the blue I heard the signiture maraca sound. It was surprisingly loud and sudden. I didn't even have time to really react, I turned around as I continued running away from the sound and I saw this massive snake coiling up. It happened around 3:30 pm.
How common is it to run into rattlers at the park on trails?
I think I ran into this same snake đ on the same part of the trail youâre describing last week. His coloring blended so well with the sand that I never would have seen him without the warning rattle. Luckily wasnât wearing headphones and stopped dead in my tracks, less than 10ft from the coiled danger noodle with 8-10 rattles. Stay vigilant fellow hikers!
