no, not that. it feels like i’m making a snapping sound with the tendon or my bones or something. i can also do whatever this is over and over again. i’m sorry i don’t really know how to describe this
wait what ??? My ankles click every time I take a step (usually after I’ve been resting for a while). Is it really that bad for you?
no not that, i mean that thing you do where you click/pop your joints on purpose, like. idk how to describe it. but i can make a clicking noise in both my ankles, its a lot easier and louder in the weak one, so i keep doing it. not while walking, id say voluntarily but if it was 100% voluntary i wouldnt be asking how to stop myself from manually clicking my ankle bones
There’s no harm in cracking your joints. The cracking sound is just air bubbles in the synovial fluid popping. I’ve asked multiple doctors if it’s okay to crack my joints, because it gives me mild relief, and they’ve all said there’s nothing wrong with it.
no, not that. i know that’s harmless. when i do whatever this is, i can feel something moving around inside my ankle, and i can do it over and over again, so it’s not like where you crack your fingers or whatever and you can only do it once
okay I don’t understand much better but is it the clicking noise you like, or the physical sensation? As a kid, i remember having juice that comes in a glass bottle, can’t remember the brand rn. But they had metal bottle caps and if you pressed on it, it’d pop out and back in. I used to play with them all the time. I didn’t know i was autistic back then but I would fidget with everything
the physical sensation, the noise actually kinda freaks me out knowing that its coming from my own joints like that
gotcha. I don’t know what it feels like so i have no advice soz :/
how are you clicking it, what movement are you using? about the stimming aspect i’d suggest working on switching the stim. in the past i’ve done it by finding a stim with the same or similar feel and consciously switching from the bad stim. i know it’s not the same for everyone but it’s how i deal with my harmful stims
it’s hard to describe but it feels kind of like i move one of the bones in my ankle and i can feel it shift and the joint itself makes a clicking sound? sorry if this is confusing, i dont know how to describe it
I do this exact thing. I find myself doing it as a STIM when I am nervous, or bored.
i know the feeling my ankles do it to. what way are you moving the ankle when it makes the noise? mine only do it when i point my toes
You could try boots or compression socks? I was doing this with my shoulders a lot back in high school but now they hurt so much. At least you know that it's bad for you now lol.
I know this advice is obvious but def look into popping/clicking types of stim toys
thank you for the advice, i’ll try that
You could wear a brace that prevents you from being able to do that movement. I've found only the really uncomfortable ones offer that kind of restriction. If you are in fact moving a tendon over a bone repeatedly, that could cause damage. Depending on what movement you do to make it happen, K-tape might work. Though restricting the stim will be a challenge and you'll want to replace it with something less harmful. Maybe one of those slime balls with beads in it could help. Edit:typo
Common symptoms for a lot of folks. My ankles and wrists and hips do this when walking or working out. It isn't really anything to worry about unless you're experiencing more pain than usual.
No advice, but I do this exact same thing, but with only my big toes. It's really loud, so I only stop if I notice I am around others (it's like pen-clicking annoying).
I stub my toes so often and so severely, though, I'm convinced they are no longer complete bones, but fragments held together somehow. So I'm not worried about further damage 😅
Is there some sort of proof that clicking/popping them weakens it? Everything I've seen so far says that popping joints doesn't have any noticeable effect on their health.
