I was thinking maybe a water feature. I’m not sure if I should remove the carpet now or wait. It’s just a weird little area that needs something.
I love that this looks like every Amazon ad for a kitty item.
One of those ads actually convinced me to buy it because it was photoshopped so bad that I couldn’t stop laughing
That's the first thought what came to me! haha!
Maine Coon tail just hanging like mistletoe.
All romantical n shit
😂😂😂😂😂
I was gonna say plants are always the answer, but I think cat wins this one
Haha, I was thinking a cat too.
Came here to say this!
If there's a landing up there maybe some art on the walls.
I hate these things. Terrible design. I had one in a suburban home in Minnesota. We just ignored it.
This is a suburban home in Minnesota lol.
A basket of mittens then dontcha know
Probably the same architect.
I literally thought this looks like Minnesota 😅
That’s amazing haha
I guarantee the workers that built the house, hated building that as well lol
Why tf did someone add carpeting there
Old people. Old people love carpet.
Carpet is safe. Carpet is life.
Just wondering where you get your statistical information about old people liking carpet. I am not asking because I am old and don’t like carpet. It is because I am old and I think generalizations cause problems in society. Before you know it there is all kind of generalizations about all people. Old people are like people they happen to be old.
Carpet was very popular in mid century modern homes, which many old people spent a lot of their life in. Just like how hardwood is popular in more modern homes
Old people like carpet lol
Edited to add: it's warm and non-slip, making it suited for more elderly people
Not only is it non-slip and warm, it hurts a lot less to fall onto thick carpet that’s padded underneath. Less bruising, slightly less chance to break a hip. It can’t avoid a broken hip altogether but I’d much rather slam my hips into padded carpet than I would a tiled floor.
Ditto Simple_Area_260
Not all of us! Ugh, carpets are disgusting
Can't brag about your wall-to-wall carpeting if it doesn't reach all the walls.
All I could think about was the poor asshole who got tasked with kicking that remnant. Perched all weird on the ladder on the stairs. Reaching through the spindles. And then he decides that it also needs mitered trim…
Right?! Dude was like, "Fuck me, I need a drink." Lol.
I’m wondering how funny it must look to vacuum the tiny space!😉
Add a ladder and conduct an orchestra from there - or give a speech
You really know how to enjoy life and I appreciate that.
An L-shaped photo/painting frame?
A statue of the virgin mary / elvis / tupac / anyone
A painting on an easel

Plants, every awkward space near a window needs plants.
I think a hanging basket would be nice there, maybe a boho macrame vining thing like pothos to fill the space, or something potted with a more tall/vertical shape like snake plant. definitely something easy to care for since you would’nt want to have to fuss over it much in that location. A succulent or cactus perhaps?
Agree! Pothos or snake for sure, snake would last longer and need less care, although idk if a snake would get enough light.
Snake plant can grow in the dark
Not for long, they start to get leggy and weak after about a year in a low light room, I think they are technically succulents, which are high light plants. Also, they are native to Africa, which isn't very dark.
Oh ok I kill all house plants so I didn't know except what I have read .
It's all good, friend. I only know because I kept my snakes in low light, and it got super weak and sad. Then I moved it in a window with morning light and it flourished.
I literally had one in a storage unit, in complete darkness, for over 3 months. It’s still alive six years later. I’m notoriously a black thumb.
Wait, it was in the storage for 3 months or 6 years? If it's three months, then yeah, that's fine. Like I said, it took over a year for mine to get leggy, and it was/is still alive it just didn't look good. If it was in the storage for six years in the dark, then I am thoroughly impressed and shocked.
Plants are in the running for sure. You can never have too many .
It’s begging for a plant
Doesn't look like that space has sufficient light.
fake ones though, because that's a hard spot to access for watering
Every awkward space near a window needs a cat
Facts.
Yes! This😊
I love this idea. Maybe this on a wall and a small potted plant on the floor
wtf even is this? I’ve seen posts of weird stair spaces but wtf. It even has carpet. I’d make a tiny living room with a real tv that runs friends 24/7 to stuffed mice
Yes! Some sort of cute diorama has to be in order
A scaled model of another room in the house would be neat.
Scale model of the house
mini christmas tree during the holidays
All the time. Decorate for the season/holiday.
I want to see a Labor Day tree. Decorate it in…wrenches and hammers…screwdrivers?
(I don’t actually know what labor days for…)
Red is the traditional color of the labor movement, so a red garland or balls could be repurposed from the Valentine's Day or Christmas styles (gold sickle for the star, naturally).
If you have kids that would make an excellent "time out" corner
The only reason that’s carpeted is for a cat.
The previous owner had cats.
Dry wall it in.
That has occurred to me.
any thing you put up there will collect dust. if that bothers you, either don’t put anything up there or drywall it in.
but if you have a cat, leave it. because car, obvs.
This is the way.
Literally the only acceptable answer
Elf
Large fake plant? Light up art piece? Think stained glass with a light behind it.
Stained glass could be cool.
So hear me out.. if you’re into those fantasy booknook things .. like a space inside a small space like a glimpse of a coffee shop or library inside a tiny hidden location.. that… that would be nice.
Does that tiny ledge give anyone else anxiety, or is it just me? I don’t know why I imagine myself trying to stand on it and slipping off. Even though nobody is asking me to do such a thing 😁
Nothing. It will get dusty and gross and will be very hard to clean. Not everything needs to be decorated!
It's begging for a plant.
Floor vase’s with pampas grass..
Are we just gonna not talk about the carpet? WHY IS THERE CARPET
Silk plant, large one or a colorful vase large enough to fit the space. I really can't tell how big it is.
Cat
a gargoyle, obviously.
Learn to play the triangle, join a symphony orchestra, collect a lot or different triangles, build a storage/display rack for them. Take the rest of the day off.
I’d put some item/totem up there. Indian god/goddess, Olmec head, Ronald McDonald, some conversation piece.
Ronald Mcdonald 😂
Not every space needs to be filled.
Plants corner! 🪴
Cat
A shrine to your God.
A plant 🌱
I feel like you could put a cool bust or Statue there. Please update when you find something!!
Maybe a high plant? With a three legged stool, I think it would look awesome
Tall tree or plant
Buy a new house
An altar to Kali
Need a little dustbuster to vacuum that little patch.
A mini-grandfather clock of no more than 24 inches high and no less than 12 inches high..
Sue for emotional damages.
Eagle statue (if you live in the US)
Either this or a bronze sculpture of a wild mustang.
maybe one that plays this song whenever you walk under it …
When in doubt, plant it out 🤣
Gumball machine
Statue of Apollo
or Aphrodite … 👀
To me it’s the perfect place for a cool plant (depending on sunshine levels) or fake plant
The answer to this is always to make it weirder in your own particular brand of weird.
Urinal

I see these posts daily. You guys realize that every single little space doesn’t need to be filled right?
The triangular nook has an estimated area of 4.5 square feet. Given the national average cost of $150 per square foot, the total cost of this space is $675. Over a 30-year mortgage, this space costs approximately $22.50 per year. Why not fill it if you're paying for it? Stop opening posts if you're tired of reading them.
I love that you mathed this out. Now I want to go figure out what random parts of my house are costing me per year.
“Hey kids! Enough sitting on the couch! Get up and go outside and play or something! I’m not paying $26.14 a year for that spot of couch for you just to sit there all summer!!”
Oh yeah. This is gonna be fun. I’m getting so many teenage eye rolls this summer.
Thanks! I own a couple commercial kitchens. One day, my sales guy and I were sitting around talking about some equipment we needed and where we'd put it if we got it.
He said, "first of all, we can get shelves on these walls over here, make an aisle out of shelves in the pantry over there. Listen man, you pay a lease on every square foot of this place, 24 hours a day each day you pay rent. So if you're not using the square footage or not using the time, you're paying for nothing to happen in that space and time."
Kind of blew my mind in the moment, and have held onto that thought since. The comments here are not wrong that not all space NEEDS to be filled. But if OP is staring at a dumb, empty space above his stairs and is bothered enough to post for ideas how to fill it online, I don't feel like those are the most appropriate comments. He's paying for a spot and wants it to look and feel the best to him. Just wanted to point out to OP that the space has a literal value to it.
*Edit: For transparency and reproduction, I used GPT with a pretty basic prompt with average terms and no precise interest rates or figures. "Using this image, calculate how many square feet (est) is in this nook next to a staircase. It is the width of a typical staircase. Then, using that sq. footage and the national average of how much a square foot of home costs in america, calculate how much that space is costing per year on a 30 year mortgage."
Back in 2019 when I had the above conversation we didn't have the pleasure of GPT and did it all by hand. For shits and giggles I went back and put our old info in and it came up with the same figures, roughly (I'm sure it's math is better than mine lol).
So tl;dr if you want to have fun harassing your kids accurately, go plug the dimensions and mortgage terms into gpt and have fun tormenting them!
Thanks!!! I am off to come up with various means of driving the kids nuts with random house math!
And I agree that while negative space is important, so is enjoying your space and if something is bothering you, by all means fill it. Not every one has the same style. To a minimalist, more than one picture on a wall in a room might be overwhelming and uncomfortable but to a maximalist one picture on a wall in a room looks barren, cold and uncomfortable.
I can’t stand white walls. To me it feels like a rental that I have no permanence in. I rented so many places that I wasn’t allowed to paint walls.
Now that I own my home, I’ve painted every wall, even if it’s just a light grey in some spaces. Anything other than white, because I can, I like it and it represents mentally that I own the space. No one can tell me what I can or can’t do.
I know it’s an awkward space but I actually love it
Great space for seasonal holiday decor
Vibey lights/lamp/lighting.
A plant? A ”Chucky” doll?
Big plant/indoor tree.
Another shelf for trinkets
Scary clown doll. Motion activated with lights and sound
Batman shrine
Build stairs to it
Build a mini version of your bedroom
A plant 🪴
Get a Fern?
Gargoyle
Get a cat.
Need a little Dustbuster to vacuum that little patch.
A standing globe?
Dinky palm tree with string lights on it.
Or a flamingo lawn ornament.
Remove the carpet and make it a plant area
What would the cost be to just close it up, open it on the side and have more useable space?
A large silk plant. With a water feature you could have a problem with mold.
Me personally? I naturally would obtain small furniture. And a small lifelike creature to "live" right there. Tiny wall art. Tiny tea cups. Tiny bed. Such a good opportunity
A nice vase with fake flowers or greenery.
Something like this with your own personal decor items or plants and family photos
A plant is always my answer
A long piece of vertical art on the skinny wall, nothing else.
Aquarium
Lights that’s it a picture would be weird since nobody would pay attention to it and a plant would be a hustle to water
My go to for any nonsensical space like this would be a very high quality fake plant that hangs down.
Corner plant ( even ) if it’s fake, add a corner book shelf , add pictures2/2. Love this area
I like that they carpeted it. Because, why not?
The answer is: Gargoyle.
looks like such a good spot to sit
random things. every day a new thing. people won't understand. you'll never acknowledge it. why is there a kazoo above your stair? ...the fuck you on about?
Hand write a crafty looking sign “Nothing to see here. Move along”.
Lmao the way they carpeted it is crazy
Put your toddler there when they misbehave
Library
Cat observation deck
Good spot for a life size mannequin, handy place if you need to store one.
In Denver, a bedroom.. Probably rent for about 1000/month
P*t plant.
J/k (sort of). Maybe in interesting to you to vase with some faux greenery?
The fact that modern construction is okay with creating these nonsensical monstrosities is so triggering to me. It’s just a visual assault.
I hate the maintenance involved in owning an old house, and how not compatible the wiring is for today’s living, but the weird spaces in old houses are for things like rum running or having milk delivered. They are interesting and not confusing eyesores.
Crazy that somebody decided to carpet it. How easily reachable is it? I would probably put a plant there, but I’m always looking for places to put my plants.
Plant
I think the home designer should be forced to stand there for all eternity and think about just exactly what to do with that space.
I’d love to hear the desperate attempts at ideas to get off their perch
I used to work as a nanny for a woman who had her cat stuffed, and it sat on that part of the hallway
What about one of those singing fishes?
Has kater?
A sculpture of the architect and have your children use it for spitball target practice./s
Seriously, think about an artificial plant the drapes down.
Bucket of paint with a trip rope.
several plants. Maybe in tiers! Layered. Dripping.
A Christmas Story leg lamp for sure.
Ficus
I came here to say “cat” and go but apparently we are the borg
Carpenter here. Builders only do this shit to charge more for square footage.
Its a floor. Carpet it, bitch.
A plant (Pothos) and maybe a little framed picture on each wall.
Maybe a large vase or urn with pampas grass
A sculpture, statue, beautiful vases
That's the naughty corner where you go think about what you've done.
Reading nook is always the answer. But it might be too small of a space in this case
Just throw a nice plant on there. Problem solved. Or if you have a cat you could make it like their little area to perch and hang out
Take the carpet off and add whatever you like.
Pallid bust of Pallas.
Clearly you just need to get a cat to enjoy this spot!
An illusion of 3D. / It is also known as 3d art, 3d Pavement art, 3d sidewalk art, 3d chalk art - find a local artist and draw something you like.. or do it yourself if you’re talented. I think a tunnel would be cool
Skeleton
Put a stuffie there to guard the stairs lmao
Gargoyles!
Well the carpet def needs to go…it makes it look like an idea got cancelled lol. I have a three story house with upper loft and at the base of the second set of stairs to the loft there is a similar area but it’s square and it was built so that the front of it is recessed and provides a shelf display area as well as the main shelf. I am able to reach this area from midway up the stairs. I ended up decorating it to complement family heirlooms that aren’t valuable except sentimentally: my mom’s bowling trophies, my bronzed baby shoes, my dad’s old baseball glove, etc.
I would do some sort of family pics in nice frames or a mirror. Nothing on the floor. If the wall is decorative you won’t notice the floor
A plant
An anvil :)
Is that triangle attached or is it just sitting loosely?
Destroy it
You need to get a kitty who can slink through the railing and snooze on that little platform. :)
