Had my red oak floors redone and stained in Provincial? Am I being dramatic?
Thank you. I agree. Is the only solution a complete do over
More common with dark stain but not normal. There are some oil finishes like Woca or Rubio that are easier to get consistent results.
It’s blotchy and uneven. This is due to bad buffing job.
Is the only solution a complete redo?
Unfortunately yes. Sry about your luck
Yep agreed - the only way to fix is to sand properly at each grit. It almost looks like they did your floor with a square buff and poorly at that. Sorry!!
Yep.
It looks like the buffer operator took his lunch break before he completed the room, and forgot to come back….
Is that paneling ? Omg !
Yes, it’s paneling in my husbands office. Which I am keeping!
Love the paneling - throwback to my youth! Sorry about the botched job.
Somebody didn't water pop
Is what normal ? that terrible sanding job ? Or how terrible that stain looks ? 🤢 this picture right here is a perfect example of why I quit using Dura Seal browns. See all that black in the soft grain ? God that looks terrible. And how many coats of finish is that ? 1 ?
Most of the people commenting on here have no clue what they're talking about. Those are called chatter marks, from using a certain type of drum sander, where the paper was a bit too loose. It's common with dark stains, and will die down on its own over time. However, it could have been avoided and an overall better stain could've been produced by doing a water pop procedure. Sometimes they can be buffed out, but that has to be done before the floors are stained, and usually a buffer won't stop it from happening. It's not a physical effect, it's a visual effect, and like I said it will die down with age
Not chatters lol 🤦🏻♂️
My guy is coming back tomorrow to do a “light sand and one more coat”. Will that help the issue?
Not at all
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but regardless of why the stain did not absorb evenly into the wood, the only thing to do now is to re-sand the floor and prep it properly. Because he just sanded them, he can probably skip the rough cut, but the floors will need to be completely bare again in order to properly absorb the stain, which is also a sealer. Most professionals do a water pop treatment, which opens all of the the grain of the wood so that it absorbs into everything and gives it a rich and even color
Ugh, okay thank you. Or I could live with it and it will get better over time?
It will get better overtime, everything will be less apparent when you put furniture and area rugs down, and eventually you'll forget about it. Or, make him do redo the job correctly. It's up to you, sometimes it's not worth the time and trouble and you just wanna get back into your house. In any case, best wishes!
PS. If you don't have them redo the job, they should at least offer to do a free maintenance "buff and coat" after about 5 or 10 years, when the polyurethane starts to wear off on high traffic areas
No, that looks like Poodoo!
I can not believe they cleared over uneven stain.. nuts
No safety issues but it does look bad.
Ouch
Yes it is normal, but not right. I’d say that’s on par with 80% of the work I see in my area. Only a small percentage of finishers do it right, and will typically be ‘too expensive’.
To address another response…I don’t really see chatter though it’s hard to tell in the pictures. It looks more like wave given the apparent spacing, but even then it’s just too inconsistent to be either I think. Looks more like just general bad belt/drum sander use. Regardless it is definitely an inconsistent sand job with what appears to be over screening to try to make it better. This particular finisher most likely does not even know how to do better so you are best to move on to someone else or suggest he looks up how to water pop. Water popping can turn a fairly poor sanding job into a nice looking stain job at the very least.
A lot of chatter marks might have come out with buffing, which is why it's not consistent. Could also be other issues in combination, but yeah, overall not the best sanding job. I've deffi seen much worse, tho
Sorry you're dealing with this, I understand all too well and I'm having the same issues in mine currently. Here's a few photos. https://imgur.com/a/cuDyTsb
They hired a subcontractor who did a terrible job. Stained it the wrong color first had to re-sand it, then was horrible, was doing the hall bathroom another time so that's 3 times for it, still looks awful. They fired the contractor and filed with their insurance. 4 months later, their insurance said it doesn't cover quality or workmanship so they'd do another resand but I feel its been to many times since my builder did it a couple times and the amount they'll need to sand to fix this has me not trusting it can be done. Especially since they already botched it. I wanted to just install a new pre-finished and be done and move on so I'm not out of my house for 2+ weeks again and having to deal with the off gassing fumes.
What color are your floors? They look similar to mine - love the color! I can see the unevenness in your floors in your pictures. So sorry you are going through all of that!
My floors do not look quite as bad, and I don’t see any physical issues with my floors, just coloring.
Mine are called antique brown. I loved them originally but had water leak damage in the kitchen that damaged large area of the floor. My insurance covered to have it all redone in the house to match but bad luck. I want the contractor to just replace it since I don't trust them that they can sand it again since their insurance is going to cover the damage since it's a quality or workmanship issue and most companies don't take out policies for that type of coverage. So I've waited 4 months on their insurance to say that with them knowing full well they wouldn't cover it. So now I'm going to have to come to some agreement with the main contractor to fix this. I don't wanna be out of my house for 2 plus weeks and if so I'm making them pay for a hotel. I work from home so I need a place to work basically. I'm going to try the argument that cost of doing the floors is same as what you paid that crappy sub to do it then add on couple thousand to stay at a nice hotel for two weeks, easier to just replace it all with pre finished and only 2 to 3 days of work and I don't have to leave. We'll see. Hope you get yours figured out.
Red Oak? Stained? That's the problem. Red Oak is very porous and most likely the stain was applied and absorbed.
(Did a box project in Red Oak, learned afterwards, will personally never work with Red Oak again)
What color paint in on the walls?
SW Alabaster!
If you redo it be careful with that dust, freshly sanded oilbase finish in dust/garbage bags is super spontaneous combustible….dont ask how l know…😮 🙏🙁
Yes completely do over Rethink stain Bona traffic w classic or amber seal and no stain If you insist on stain expect to pay 8-10$ per sq ft for a pro job
This was a pro job 😩
They aren’t real pros or it was not an owner/operator doing the work but a flunky crew Sorry you are dealing w it. Did you pay in full?
I think it’s hard to tell from photos. I just spent two weeks redoing my red oak floors using Bona products - 2 x Red Out, Drifast stain in Natural, Bona Intense Seal, and 3x Traffic HD. I lost my mind during the process and almost sanded to bare wood again several times when each stage didn’t turn out as “perfect” as I’d hoped. In the end they look really good. They’re not at all “perfect” and I can photograph them to look pretty bad or absolutely stunning. To my eye, from your pics, I can imagine your floors look quite lovely and that when your home is furnished, the things that bother you now won’t bother you much at all. I have no doubt that there are pros on this thread who see things others don’t see, but I think it’s hard to tell what’s shadow and what’s actually problematic color inconsistency. Trust yourself. Imho, they look pretty. Another thing… have you ever been in another person’s home and thought that their hardwood floor job looked splotchy and crazy? I haven’t. Because most of us don’t notice things like that and because there are more important things in life. All best to you.
Honestly thank you so much for your message! It really helped me feel OK with just letting it go and moving on. The floors are almost 100 years old so it’s never going to look perfect. Once we have furniture and shades and area rugs, no one is going to notice. The owner of the business has been so kind and is willing to redo them when we are away on vacation or give us some of our money back. I decided I’m not going to stress about it anymore and am going to move into my new house and be happy.
Make sure they are nwfa certified
Looks like poor sanding, but that’s looking on a small phone.. pity. Looks very nice other than that. Great colour….
Not normal, definitely not professional standard
