Hi everyone, Going to Chania in September for 7 nights and are renting a car from the airport with which we are planning to visit most of the popular beaches out west mentioned here. I am seeing a lot of attractive hotels in the city center but unfortunately I believe we’ll have a hard time with parking. Is it wise to lean more towards the outskirts (15-20 min walk away from city center)? Are their general areas that are preferable? Nea Chora side? South of old town? East of old town? We are not into clubbing. Just want to relax and eat good. Thank you.
great suggestion but sold out unfortunately, thank you
Damn 🙁
I’m staying at Porto Veneziano Hotel in a little over a week. Picked it because they have 20 free parking spots dedicated for the hotel. I’ve read that even if they fill up there’s a paid parking lot across the street that’s not too expensive.
We just got back from Chania and we stayed at Domes Noruz. It was a little over a 10 minute drive to the old port and very relaxing. They have about 80 rooms and I think they all have a private pool or hot tub on the patio. Incredible beach and great restaurant on-site too. They will pamper you to death.
Chania can be quite difficult with parking particularly in the centre in the summer. That said you are going in September when it eases up a bit. Nea Hora is a great place to stay with a blue flag beach only a few minutes away. However it has become quite popular in the last few years which means parking can be tricky but not impossible. You may not find a spot in front of your accommodation so may need a park a road or two further down. South of the old town is the centre of Chania. There are municipal car parks (most charge to park) but a lot of the locals that work or run errands in the centre will drive in making parking during the daytime harder. East of the old town is Koum Kapi which has a couple of municipal car parks (some paid some free) but can be a popular area so it may be harder at times.
Parking is not impossible anywhere as long as you are persistent but be prepared you may be searching for up to 15 minutes during peak hours. Also be mindful to not block any private garages/parking of residents as it may lead to a fine and removal of your licence plates by the police.
Alcanea Boutique Hotel is the most marvelous place in Chani. In the historic city, near rhe best restaurants and directly on the old harbour. We rented a car during our stay there, and we parked (for free) the car on the seafront at two or three minute walk.
