I just learned that there is supposed to be a strike called by ADEDY on May 21. We are set to arrive in Athens on an international flight on May 21. Should I be concerned? Does anyone have any experience with this or know anything more about the strike?
What worries you about the strike? ADEDY is basically the union of public sector workers so most things will be operating normally during the strike. The airport will definitely obviously be working. Taxis wont be on strike, the only way the strike could affect you is there might be limited or no buses/trains in Athens that day but thats not the end of the world. Strikes are fairly common in Athens it aint anything crazy or unusual for the city.
I would only worry if air traffic control went on strike. As long as my plane comes in I really have no worries haha. After more research, it seems that most times there’s a long strike air traffic control doesn’t end up going through with it so it should all be good.
As for the train, it was my original plan to take the metro into city center but probably will just arrange a pickup directly to the hotel so that there’s no worries there.
Extremely unlikely the strike will affect your flight into Greece. The airport is probably the only thing in Athens that actually runs like clockwork
I will stop worrying about it 🙃 haha thanks
Having lived in Athens for 14 years until this past one , I wish I could say that air traffic is usually cancelled . Has caused us issues more times than i can count . I always have back up flights when it’s necessary for me to be some place .
Thanks for your input. I am getting married two days before leaving and so it doesn’t really leave much time for worrying 😁 we’re just going to have to wait and see what happens and hopefully get on a flight the next day if it fails!
