Absolutely ridiculous Shohei
He's already the favorite and somehow leading the league in WAR despite being a pure DH. If on top of that you add the most prestigious batting achievement that the NL hasn't seen in almost 90 years, there's absolutely no good reason for him to not be taking home his third unanimous MVP.
Yeah, it feels crazy to imagine, but I really believe and hope he can manage to win a triple crown! (that's honestly nuts it's been nearly 90 years since someone won it in the NL)
Yep, this is his "easiest" year let's say for him to achieve this since he's not pitching, so let's get it!
Elaborate on batting achievements. What is he doing that's hasn't been done in 90 years?
A triple crown winner ( leader in home runs, RBIs, and batting avg) in the National League. Batting triple crowns are rare in general and the last one was Miggy Cabrera in 2012
To elaborate a bit more, the triple crown is per league so while Cabrera was the most recent one, the last NL triple crown was Joe Medwick in 1937. So in that sense it would literally be a once in a lifetime achievement.
My logic is no player has ever won MVP just being a DH, so it would take a once in a lifetime player to break that trend. I wonder what player fits that bill...
It helps that his #1 contender so far is a first basemen, Bryce Harper. It would be a lot more challenging as a DH to beat a SS, C, CF, etc.
I'm gonna say if Ohtani gets 50 HRs he'll have a great chance. That'd be the Dodgers franchise record. Watching some youtube card collectors video debating between Harper and Ohtani for MVP and right now it's Ohtani, but it could come down to whoever finishes strongest...
I want Ohtani to get triple crown, 50 HRs, and the MVP...but I'd trade it all for a WS title =P
50 homers would definitely require the post-season to reach.
I will be very curious to see what kind of Ohtani we get, since he's never been to that undiscovered country before.
I mean, he's on pace for 48 so it's certainly doable
He's the leading MVP contender for the AL right now already so yea!!
Crazy how good he is :)
It took me 2+ years to get over the fact we have Mookie as a Dodger, and I kind of am used to the idea Freeman is a Dodger now too.
I might never get over the fact that Shohei is a Dodger. Blows my mind still lol
He got 16 stolen bases too btw just insanity stuff lol
16 sb right now
Oops dunno why I thought it was 20! I stand corrected, thanks :D
Shohei is so good he leads mvp talks in the league he’s not even in 😎
Hes my king 💪
With him batting lead off, he needs to keep continue hitting bomb for RBI lead.
Gonna need Mookie to come back so he can come back down to 2nd but yea its hard for the RBI lead with him on lead off spot
He just needs 789 to keep hitting how they have since may 26 (second best OPS in MLB)
20+ stolen bases and he could be quadruple crown
No way he beats Elly
I'd take a 40-40 triple crown lol
50-30, is more in his reach, which has never been done before IIRC
Baseball boy is setting a standard that can only be reached by Mount Rushmore tier players. He’s a once in a century type talent.
Does this only count for the NL?
Someone said in another comment triple crown is per individual league so I guess so
I'm so glad he is on the team I root for.
Mookie being out obviously hurts the dodgers but I think it’s good for shohei’s mvp chances. Mookie would’ve been the main competition for shohei and at the very least, would’ve taken some votes away from him. Mookie being out so long he will probably get very few mvp votes, if any.
Also just fyi, the 2 times shohei won mvp, Mike trout saw extended time on the iL. It’s almost like he steps his game up another notch when he sees key players hit the iL.
I don't know why you were downvoted, since you are objectively correct. When Mookie got hurt, he and Ohtani were 1st and 2nd on the WAR leaderboards.
Yeah I don’t know.lol doesn’t bug me though. I wasn’t trying to count anybody else out like Harper for example, I just really think mookie when playing is one of the best players in the world, and being gone for maybe 2 months or so hurts mookies mvp chances. I’d rather have him playing but he’s not.
I think mvp voters also look back at things like this and say “the dodgers had mookie out for 2 months and Ohtani kept the runs and wins coming in”. I think that matters, especially if things are close with another guy in the NL, that kinda storyline might encourage a voter to give his vote to Ohtani.
Put him @ batting 3rd already. He could totally do it.
Ohtani has 60 RBI which is tied for 5th. Judge has 73 RBI.
Edit - mistakes were made
Judge is AL, Ohtani 2nd in NL after Ozuna's 64
Wow I wonder if he can take home an MVP as a pure DH (only two other times a DH has won the MVP: both were Shohei, but never as a pure DH).
If he manages a triple crown at the end of the season, I think it'd be really hard to argue otherwise.
