Didn’t grab any pictures from the top.
Sooo I should return these two above ground pools…??
Just don't put them on the deck
Just put one on the top deck. Do as you please with the other
Well, I was planning to use the top deck as the diving platform.
You are a champion sir 🥇
Ya can't get more above ground than that top deck
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA you’re the best
Video that shit and post it here !! lol
I know nothing about this, but it seems like there should be diagonal connections going between the tallest posts to make them more rigid below the high deck.
Is that just overkill?
My first thought when I saw this, Now THAT I'd slap a hot tub on
Honestly that thing looks like it would survive a cat 5 and a tsunami. I would think a hot tub would be just fine.
Oh hey, they have a Bat House, but it seems a bit low. Do you ever get any living there?
Usually, they like homes that are at or above tree-level and fairly unobscured.
Source: I'm a bat, man.
Good spot, Bat. That was a new addition and the height was discussed. I’ve heard 10-20’ off the ground…? That is 10+. They already have bats nesting under the deck so hoping they will move into the house. It may get moved if they don’t like its current placement.
Perhaps add a second one higher up? If the intent is to prevent them nesting under the deck then providing ample alternatives can only help
Your dad's got a huge deck.
Unfortunately, it’s not genetic.
lmao dude who are you I wanna be your best friend
Just a guy trying to use his little deck to its full potential. Gotta appreciate the little things in life!
It’s not the size of the deck that counts, it’s how it’s put together. While your dad’s deck may be a bit bigger it’s also very pleasing to look at. I’m sure your deck looks awesome brother, regardless of size!
I definitely won’t be sending any unsolicited deck pictures but I appreciate the boost of confidence!
Anytime big guy, and it’s probably a good idea. Most men will remember a pretty deck they’ve fooled around on. The size and shape of any imperfections could help someone identify you at a later time and we don’t need any employment issues on top of already having a tiny deck.
Solid advise. Don’t need that getting around.
You guys had way too much fun with that.
Lol, love the exchange here!

OP’s mom likes a big deck man
The symmetry of the exterior color matching the $funds$ that deck represents. Jebus... Jokes aside, the 'rents have quite the sense of aesthetic. That's a really nice spread.
The tones are quite earthy…although, the funds not directly so. They spent a lot of time/consideration on that space.
Oh it is quite evident the made sure the room was tied together man.
These are goals.
Are you parents looking to adopt a new son btw?
What’s one more brother. Come on!
can't hide money
All that money spent on metal posts when you could have gone with 2x3s....
All the 2x3s at Lowe’s were warped and we were on a time crunch.
I’m sorry man, I’ll tell Marvin to do better
Marvin has the curviest wood in town.
Is that metal or just black painted 4x?
There are some spots that make me question if it’s metal.
All supports and rails are metal. Main supports are 6x6
I’m so jealous 😏
That’s a nice sized deck.
This is the way. 👏👏👏
That's exactly like the one I used to have.
Looks great👍🏼
Love it but a deck this nice DESERVES t&g underside to finish it off!!
Ooooh that’s next level. I’ll make the recommendation.
Yes!!
It’ll have to wait until the bats move out from under the deck and into the bat house though
Tongue and groove is not the move under the deck. It’ll hold any rain that drifts in and discolour/rot
Only 600 steps though.
Just enough to finish wearing you out after climbing the hill up to the house.
Honestly, I’m not a fan of the mixed/hybrid supports. I think if you’re going to go that direction, just incorporate steel I-Beams.
I see where you’re coming from. They weren’t planning for steel at all so the upgrade to steel way blew the budget. Don’t think I-beams were in the discussion at all.
It’s still an attractive deck, and based on the height, the steel support poles was likely the better option in terms of strength and aesthetics. I just think a wood deck floating on a steel structure would have been a better design. It’s just personal preference
Is that steel? If so, nice!
Yes, yes it is. Posts, rails and cables.
That is an amazing deck. Do you know what that cost them? Was thinking about something similar but only one level.
I have no idea and my dad isn’t one to talk about such things…
Need the reverse/under shot to see how the beams are tied into the vertical (steel?) supports
I’ll try to grab that next time I’m there. And yes, supports are steel.
you came to the right place
I anticipate keeping this clean is going to be a nightmare. Very nice though.
Decking has been sealed a couple times and cables rubbed with oil. Hasn’t been too much of a nightmare but some work for sure.
The deck is worth as much as the house!
It's a shame they spent all that money and didn't bother to put a drain system on at least one of the overhanging sections so they could have a rain-proof seating area.
I put a roof on my deck. Keeps the sun off, but any wind will blow rain in on you.
My word, your deck is so big.
Only thing I don't like missing cross beam
Oh hey I saw that one on the market a while back, very cool house.
Must be a different one. My parents had the house built…
Why is my family so poor
Need to add cable cross supports and a hot tub
How are the beams supported?
They each have a (probably 2’ wide and not sure how deep but several feet) concrete “column” underneath them.
I think you're referring to the posts. How are the horizontal members supported?
I’ll have to look next time I’m there but I believe there is a little piece welded to the main post that the beams sit on. As far as secured to the posts…not positive.
Apparently I just can't be happy. I love it. Looks great, obviously well engineered and built. But I mean, wouldn't we all build decks like this if we could afford it? I bet one of those 40 ft steel posts are worth more than most entire deck builds posted on here. Idk. I definitely don't wanna hate on it but it's just like, ya, of course it looks that good, probably cost more than the damn house.
I wonder why that bugs me? I felt the same way traveling Italy and looking at all the touristy things. Like the Duomo. Of course it is big and beautiful and gorgeous, but I think literally anyone could have done it if they had enough slave workers and blood money to pay for it like the Romans did back then, (let's not even get into the Vatican.)
Some people go to Rome, some build decks, some do it all.
Envy is a hell of a thing.
It's not envy.
I envy nice fishing boats, or beautiful cars. Or a well home.
This just seems excessive and kind of a short sighted design. Still, gorgeous, and well engineered, just, why?
Your own constraint on finances makes hard to overlook extraneous expenditures of others
I definitely understand your position. We do spend a lot of time as a family out on the deck. Not that that justifies every aspect of it but it all does get used frequently in one way or another. I appreciate having the bottom deck rather than a 40’ long staircase all the way to the top
Nah, your parents earned it. Live it and love it.
Euler is spinning in his grave.
What’s Euler’s disdain for the deck? Not enough trig involved?
Google “Euler column buckling.”
Ahh I see. That’s why they opted for 6x6 steel supports with bracing at this length.
Not with this one he ain’t.
That's one big black deck.
That’s how that’s done. Metal supports Amen. Looks pretty good. Now don’t go whacko and out a tub up there lol.
