Bottom mount sink just fell off

Sink just fell through our counter - bottom mounted. We are looking for something to brace the sink and hold it up so I can remove the garbage disposal and start to work with the sink. The counter top is quartz, and it looks like the sink was not connected by any brackets - it was held on only by the sealant. This is our first home, and we’re pretty inexperienced.

How do I go about repairing this and what do I need to go buy? Thanks in advance.

I have some plumbers putty, but no silicone sealant.

Is this a new house? It sounds like they forgot to install the brackets. I cant imagine any sealant would be able to hold a sink without some assistance. I believe you will want to remove all the old sealant, clean it up, add new sealant, put the sink back...and attach brackets. Probably some that attach to the counter with epoxy would be best.

2008 build - no remodel, but it could have been maybe fixed up before the sale (we bought in 2021). I have no idea how the sink was supposed to stay attached with no brackets - it was only a matter of time….

I’m also watching a bunch of YouTube videos - and will make sure we clean and dry the sink, and the countertop and remove all the old sealant/putty and prep it for new sealant.

Any suggestions on how to best secure the new brackets while the epoxy cures? There isn't access for me to easily clamp any of them to make sure they are fitting solid. My only thought right now is to get another couple 2x4 and use them to brace the brackets as well as the sink.

The other brackets I was looking at mount to the wood around the sink - not the underside of the countertop.

Make wood prop rods 1/2" longer than they need to be and jam them in there at an angle.

For the sink itself, remove the drain and you can use a piece of wood across the hole to lift it. Use a piece of wood across the counter and a ratchet strap to hold it up. Deal with the brackets after the sink is dry.

Just saw this on a video - way better than bottom bracing. I saw it done with two pieces of 2x4, and a metal rod connecting them. Didn’t think to use a ratchet strap instead - I have a few handy.

You may have already fixed this but the easiest way for us.

Worked.in a hotel with all bottom mount sinks that would fail over time. Thankfully ours all had clips but the OG adhesive they used during construction was garbage.

Anyway we used a car jack. A small one with a block of wood and a rag that way it didn't scratch the sink. We would then jack the sink back on place.

So much easier than any other method I tried.

You will be hands free and not have to have a bunch of boards in your way.

My home is 2009, exact same thing happened to my under-mount sink. This was my fix. The new 'supports' are right next to the original walls so it doesn't even look bad. I did a few revisions of the supports trimming of millimeters off to get them so they fitter, but were a tight fit.

Just so you know - tried the 2x4 over the counter connect through the drain with ratchet straps - but because the drain is not in the middle of the sink, it torqued the sink overnight and it shifted when it set.

I was able to pry it off and had to redo the whole process. This time I got a bottle jack, and used my scrap 2x6 to prop up the sink. Way easier and no shifting overnight. Thanks.

If it were me, I would push the sink up to where it goes, use a marker to outline it on the underside of the counter. Drop the sink down, epoxy the brackets (or bolts) in place based on the outline, and just clamp them in place while the epoxy sets. You have easy access without the sink in the way. Then when the epoxy is set, you can add the sealant, lift the sink up, and tighten the clamps. You might want to use a piece of wood or something to make sure the sink is really pushed up. Someone mentioned a jack, which is a pretty solid idea.

Edit: Also, I wouldnt use plumbers putty. It doesnt really set, it is thick, and it is tan. I would use a clear silicone sealant, use a generous amount, and clean up any that gets squished out.

Put a large clamp through the drain and a 2x4 across the counter. Or a 2x4 with a long threaded rod going through the drain and attached to something to pull it up.

Just did it with a ~$10 harbor freight clamp no issues

Saw this on a vid, ended up doing basically the same with ratchet straps connecting the 2x4 across the counter and a 6” piece of 2x4 under the drain.

I used to work at a place called rock solid countertops, and to install a sinks. We would just run a beat of silicone around the sink and push it down and then put another of silicone around the edge and use a scraper to seal it nicely.

Exactly, sinks are glued to the countertops. Usually using just silicone. It always amazed me that it kept a loaded sink up, but apparently it does fail at times.

If you would use Sika-flex it would work better than fine. In Germany the metal sheets are glued on busses with this stuff. It is a hell to remove.

Then you need a cutting wire and a sharp scraper. It is like removing a windshield. But it is really reliable.

Right on. That might be what they used the first time and they didnt use enough. I just wouldnt think using only a regular silicone sealant would be the best idea, but I have also never worked with this kind of sink.

As a maintenance technician on rentals I have seen HUNDREDS of kitchens sinks fall out like this. It is very common for installers to only use adhesive, or only add a plumbing strap (which will not hold it in place, but will catch it when it falls... most of the time...).

Do both adhesive and mechanical supports. As soon as the adhesive cracks AT ALL its all over and it will come down. Mechnical supports hold it it place so it will never crack.

My favorite*s is when the mechanical supports are also attached with chemical adhesive. So dumb.

Yeah - was not feeling super great about using epoxy to attach the brackets to the underside of the countertop. But I won’t risk drilling into it - I know nothing about working with stone. There are brackets which mount to the cabinet walls around the sink

Yes. Use those brackets that attach to the cabinets. They will do the trick, they keep the sink in place so the adhesive never cracks.

Well the front fell off and 20000 litres of water spilled out into the kitchen and made a mess. It’s a bit of a giveaway. I’d just like to make the point that that is not normal.

Update Current Plan:
Thanks all for the advice! After reading through the comments while watching a few youtube vids, this seems doable for us.

Supplies:

Clear Silicone sealant
Epoxy
Undermount sink brackets
- Gonna see what types are at Home Depot. Not sure I like the undermount brackets if they are attacked with epoxy to the underside of the countertop - but the brackets which mount to the side around the sink will
2x4 for bracing sink
Isopropyl alcohol\scrapers for cleaning sink and underside of counter

Current Plan:

Set up working area:
- Prep the spot with some carboard\bucket
- Detach ptrap, and remove garbage disposal.
Use alcohol\scrapers to clean sink and counter\prep surface for epoxy (remove all old residue, clean, and dry)
Measure & cut 2x4 for bracing up sink (and maybe brackets)
Mix and apply epoxy on sink edge\underside of countertop, then brace the sink in place
Install under sink brackets and tighten. Depending on how the brackets are installed - may need to brace them as well.
Seal sink edge with silicone sealant & wipe of any excess while wet (make sure to clean while its still wet)
Wait for everything to set\cure

Please make sure that no sanitary piping further down the line is damaged. Sometimes it’s only possible to see what’s under the cabinet, but would hate to have a leak further downstream here.

The leak was from when we first moved in - the garbage disposal wasn’t secured properly, and I was a noob and didn’t know why it was leaking till the damage was done and the disposal seal rusted.

I replaced the garbage disposal and made sure it was sealed properly. No leaks since - but the damage was done.

Definitely will want to the support brackets after sealing, I bought a different one on Amazon and it gets the job done. Especially if it want it to support any kind of water weight/wash a small dog.

Not enough silicone is the issue here. You can see that they only laid like a 1/4 inch bead along the rim of the sink. Should have been more and would have been fine.

I disagree. We had a lot more silicone used for our undermount sink. Started failing 4 years in. We ended up using support brackets off Amazon instead of waiting for it to fall. When we removed the sink, there was so much silicone to remove. I know, because I painstakingly removed every single bit of it.

If you're using your sink like a typical homeowner, filling it with water, and putting heavy pots and stuff in there, it's bound to fail with just silicone.

I’ve installed close to a thousand sinks at this point in new home construction, kitchen, bathroom, laundry, using only silicone and we only had one fall out. It was the bathroom sink of all things. That sucks that was your experience with it. I just think that it’s a relatively rare occurrence.

Silicone isn't a structural member in any scenario. Imagine relying on silicone to hold a 30lb pot of water plus the weight of the sink (however slight it may be). Blocking, clips, or other means of support mechanically connected to the cabinet is the only right way to do this. Silicone is simply to prevent leaks beyond the rim.

Disconnect the p-trap (the two fittings should just be hand tightened) loosen up the hose clamp (worm gear clamp) pull the hose off. Pull the sink and disposal out from under the sink as one unit. Spin the disposal off of the sink once it is removed from under there( easier to work on when you have the space).

Got it - I did shut off the water already, and grabbed a bucket for removing the trap. Still trying to macgyver a brace to hold up the sink so I can remove the garbage disposal. Will get the space cleared out so I can brace the sink up.

Hey OP, make sure to inspect the drain pipes very well for crack and stress. It appear like the pipes turned and avoided the big stress, but better be safe than finding that you have a leak in the wall in a few months or years and that now you have mildrew issue and need decontamination and all that.

Good call. I did a once over and didn’t see any obvious cracks. Once I get it assembled tomorrow evening when the epoxy has cured, I’ll check with running water. The sink fell mostly on some shelving we had underneath - so the pipes didn’t take the brunt of the fall, so I’m hoping I’m good.

I would be most concerned with that connection not visible in the wall, awkward stresses can create cracks pretty easily at that junction. With it being a drain you won’t notice until it soaks everything

It will be a little more work, but I would take a multitool and cut around the drain, about the size of the t-connector just to get a visual inspection and reach my fingertips around the backside to feel for cracks.

It’s more than you probably want to do, but it’s not everyday your sink falls off and the pvc is not rated to catch your sink and garbage disposal. It’s something I would do for the peace of mind, because I’ve seen the damage a small crack there will do if unnoticed.

A multi tool with a metal ruler will leave you with a clean cut though

I have a multi tool and could do this. I know very little about plumbing - but can see 3 holes in the wood, 2 are capped, and the last is the drain.

If I pull on the ptrap, there’s some give to the entire to the system, and it make me think that if weight fell on the ptrap, it would put most of the stress at the lowest connection point, which feels below the lowest connector I can see.

I’m not an expert, but it feels like that lowest connection would have recieved the most force. I can try cutting around the drain connection and making sure the pipe didn’t crack there (near ptrap), but not sure if I can also check the lower connection point. What do you think?

I only recommend because anything connected to that will essentially act as a lever, and those garbage disposals are heavy. It really doesn’t take much for pvc to slightly crack.

The water will slowly ruin the drywall and frame,before it soaks into the cabinet enough to notice.

It’s not - wish I had read this before I went to Lowe’s. Now it’s just going to be on my todo list and may or may not ever happen. We very rarely use the disposal and haven’t had any issues with the circuit load - but, it makes sense to have a breaker on that outlet for the dispoal

Regardless of the circuit load you want an automatic shutoff if water starts going everywhere down there. So you don’t get electrocuted. Honestly it’s a pretty low probability but relatively high risk scenario so I wouldn’t sweat it too much.Just make sure you manually kill the circuit if there’s ever water down there, which you’d still want to do even when you have a GFI. But, I’d still get a GFI outlet on your next trip and swap it out as soon as you’ve got a spare 15.

If you’re not familiar with swapping outlets get help. High probability high risk scenario if you don’t know what you’re doing.

You surely have a breaker on the circuit. If the building code from your local AHJ didn't require a GFCI receptacle, there's no requirement to upgrade existing wiring or receptacles.

They do actually just use a sealer (sicaflex type) or silicone type to hold them on but do require tub to be held against the stone until cured . I can see that the installation was done hurriedly and with no attention from the installer . You will need to use a sealer that is suitable around water because of mould and mildew so a natural cure product is required.

I think that epoxy may have been used on your tub previously and maybe too brittle for that purpose 🤔 I’m no expert but I had a new tub fitted to my stone bench by professionals and silicone was used and not to the extent where the silicone entered into the wet area as I have seen other wet areas in other homes with a silicone bead around edge and there was evidence of mould or mildew forming so I think I would be asking a professional for information about this. If information you gathered from YouTube was from professionals then forget that what I previously provided 🤔

Hahaha, this happened to me last year while I was doing dishes. I just watched and didn't understand what was happening for so long. It was a 15 year old install that was done poorly with just glue. When you redo it I would make sure to mount from the cabinet to the flange this time. Mine was glued up and then some additional clips were glued up to hold the flange. So all glue, just a matter of time before it failed.

It's not so bad. I used a 2x4 across the countertop and a clamp to hold the sink up while the glue was drying. Or you can skip that and mount brackets to the cabinet so you can use bolts to hold it up by the flange.

I wholely recommend screwing/bolting wood or brackets to the side of the cabinet box that the flange can rest on. My understanding is these sinks are sized so the flange rests on the cabinet box itself, but they often install a smaller sink and the flange doesn't reach.

You must mean the faucet to the countertop and with the sink off, I can reach the screws which mount it to the counter.

Everything haha it is so much easier to get to and tighten the the faucet to the bench and the lines when the sink isn’t in the way. Mine is a double sink and it is so hard to blindly reach around with tools.

I used a scissor jack under the garbage disposal and some Liquid Nails Fuze-it. It probably would have lasted as long as whatever was originally there. I cut it out after a couple weeks because we put a drop in hammered copper farmhouse sink instead.

I like the ez one since you can install it low enough to support the sink and then silicon the top of the sink and use screws to push sink up tight...squeezing the silicon for very good water tight seal.

It’s there - not visible in the pictures. But there is about 4 inches of 1/2” plywood sticking out from the edge of the cabinet frame. It’s maybe 1” below the countertop.

Probably was too heavy - but it’s only a couple lbs heavier than the previous disposal. Previous one was a 1/2hp also.

I think if a couple lbs was the difference between the sealant holding and not - it was a shoddy install. I’ll be adding brackets

The hardest part seems to be cleaning the old sealant and putty of the sink and countertop. The plumbers putty is a PITA to remove and I’m using my hands and a utility knife. Any better tips without using a solvent like paint thinner?

This happened to us. Only the right side of the sink had brackets, because the left side was too close to a cabinet wall so there was no room for brackets. I used this adhesive to reattach the sink, braced it in position by wedging random scraps of wood under the sink to hold it up securely while it cured, and then screwed a piece of plywood to the cabinet divider on the left to fill the role of the absent brackets. It ended up a little crooked in the opening, so watch out for that. Whoops.

I got under mount sinks in the bathroom on stone countertop. I checked after install and they cut grooves into the stone for bottom mount anchors.

Then the stupid plumber installed the drains wrong and tried to silicone stuff all wrong. Told the contractor who said he'd have him back out to fix. I told the contractor that if he didn't know better the first time, what makes him think he can do it right the second time? I told him to fuck off and I know how to read directions.

When mine fell off I did what everyone else said, glue and bracket. I also bought some 2 by 2s and cut it to fit snug between the bottom of the cabinet and the lip of the sink. I got 2 and put them on diagonal corners. This way if the glue starts wearing off there’s support.

I used CT1 adhesive sealant on my double wide sink onto a concrete worktop. No brackets and no issues.

Either that's sealant or they tried using adhesive. Either way it was never going to last. I recommend scraping off the old gunk, apply new sealant and bracing it with blocks. Drilling holes for brackets into that countertop is tricky for DIY.

Had this problem with out kitchen sink. The sealant aged, and began to droop. First step, remove the garbage disposal. You need to realign the plumbing anyway, trying repair the sink with the dead weight attached isnt feasible.

Gotta clean up both the mating surfaces, which is kinda a pain. Replacement sealant is just cleat silicone to avoid leaks and adhear the sink to the counter. As other folks said, a 2x4 across the sink and under the drain with a strap to raise it in place during the sealing is helpful. For final security, i got these from Amazon and they have worked well for me.

No epoxy to the counter, and adjustable easilyfor 3 side hard support (4 depending on your undercabinet design). Bracket supports are out of the way.

When remounting you disposal, protip is to raise it on a scisor jack instead of manhandling it. Supported and easily raised in place means threading it to the bottom of the sink is WAY easier.

Get a tube of PL polyurethane adhesive, a tube of clear silicone, a couple pieces of 2x4 that span across the sink cutout and a squeeze clamp long enough to span outside to outside of the 2x4’s, countertop, and sink. Apply PL to the outer sink flange and silicone to the inner (don’t get PL on your hands/clean immediately with mineral spirits). Place the clamp through the sink to one 2x4 block under the drain hole, position the sink in the opening and clamp to the other 2x4 spanning the opening to hold it in place. Make sure it’s positioned exactly where you want it. Carefully tool the silicone around the lip and clean excess off. Leave it alone for 24 hours and it’ll be there forever
