I still do, am I weird?
Everyone knows closets are where the serial killers lie in wait for you to fall asleep. If the door is closed they can’t get out.
Let’s not make it easy for them.
And if you’re completely covered with blankets, they can’t kill you
Especially if your hand or foot isn’t sticking out.
My ex used to sleep with her feet sticking out of the covers. I used to draw little faces on her big toe & bite marks from the monsters
I like your username.
See. This is stuff I didn’t know. I have found my people.
That's why I keep my monster in my closet. He's a rat, thus also good reason to keep the door shut.
lol silly goose 🦆
My closet has a trap door that directly connects to my crawlspace so.... not saying it's even worse for me but I make sure to close that door every night
Id be double bolting that door and maybe saging the shit out of it.
I close the closet but 9 times out of 10 I find it open in the morning.
Someone should teach the Babadook some manners, he also fails to wipe his feet.
If that happened I’d have to move.
Funny you would say this. I went upstairs to grab something and noticed my linen closet bifold door in the hallway and somehow opened (the “movable” side had popped out of the track) so I was like ok weird, put it back in the track and closed it. I went back downstairs and realized the weird door issue caused me to forget what I went up for in the first place so I turn around to go back up and the door is once again totally open, off track again. 😳
I fixed it again and am researching sage
Same.
same!
I sleep with my foot hanging off the edge of the bed out from under cover too.
What? You’re living dangerously!
i will only momentarily take the risk. you’re wild !!
edgy are we
Same. My husband still makes fun of me every night too
😆yup .. me too
Monsters hide under the bed so they must be skinny and can escape under the door
Not weird... I do the same. Primarily because I own cats, but looking out in the darkness and seeing a darker void beyond that open door can be creepy AF too.
"a darker void" - this is it.
Advanced darkness lol
I shut my door either way but one of the main reasons are my cats. They do not sleep at night and will come in the room thinking everyone is on their schedule.
Same. On both points lol.
I used to have dreams every night where there would be an open/cracked door and the void would be calling to me. Really weird, like watching a movie starring me but the "camera" kept focusing on the dark doorway. There was no consistency in them either. It could be a dark room, well lit room, or me just passing a door. As well as different settings and doors. Used to freak me out.
You close it because you have cats??????? Mine hate not having access to everything at all times. I even struggle to shut the bathroom door without their explicit permission before. I haven’t showered alone in 8 years.
Same and same.
I still have to have a night light and I'm 65
I am still afraid of the dark at 69 years of age.
The switch over from NEEDING a nightlight to despising all light was immediate and random for me.
Still afraid of the open closest and the dark basement though
We all thank home alone for fear of basements
I grew up with creepy Michigan basements and a giant oil furnace that had arms reaching out. This was in the 60's and 70's so way before Home Alone. But when I first saw the movie I was right there with him, feeling his fear!
I'm older, use eye mask and earplugs. If I happen to need to get up, i tell Alexa to turn on the light.
Sounds safe to me… like getting up in the pitch black sounds like an accident waiting to happen. I will say, I believe there was a sleep study done and those who slept without so much as a light from an alarm clock ended up being marginally healthier than those with lights. I’ll take the health hits, personally, but just thought that was interesting.
I can navigate through a dark bedroom than I can a lit room in broad daylight. My muscle memory gets me to the bathroom and back at night. Mystifies me to this day…
me too. not the 65 part tho.
I upgraded to a dimmable salt lamps! I can dim them depending on how scared I am.
I'm in my 40s and definitely prefer to have some light in the room. Far too many night terrors and sleep paralysis episodes to not have some sort of light.
Yes, because my dog is an idiot and I woke up one morning to see my laundry bag wrapped around his neck. So I keep it closed if I'm not using it.
One time a cat my family had somehow got a string of Christmas tree lights wrapped around its neck luckily he started freaking out and we noticed so he was ok
Don’t people usually close the closet door when they’re finished taking something out of the closet?
Not my husband. I'm constantly shutting closet doors behind him.
My brother used to do this (and probably still does). He'd leave cupboards open, closets, drawers... it drove me crazy.
This was going to be my response as well
That's why I took the door off completely
Open is the natural happy state
Heck yeah, I don't want that evil clown doll coming out of it and attacking me while I sleep. I saw Poltergeist at the theater when it came out.
Totally relate to this.
My closet doors are closed unless in getting something out or putting something in it. Why would I leave a closet open?
Yeah I don’t like staring into the dark void if I leave it open
Yes. I have a cat.
Claws and clothes should not mix.
I live by myself. The closest in my bedroom butts up against my living room wall. On the other side of the wall is my fancy saltwater aquarium. I keep a sump tank and all the associated filters for the aquarium in my closet. With the closet doors open, the lights I use for growing algae in this sump tank are blasting my bedroom all night long.
Yes but because my cat will sleep there if I let him, and well I need my cuddlebug
I call my 18 month old my cuddle muffin!
No. I have dogs that run in and out and also 3 sons. I need to hear my house at night.
What does that have to do with your closet? You sleep in there or sm?
I keep my closet door closed all the time. The vent in bedroom blows directly into the closet so the AC doesn't work as efficiently in the bedroom when the door is open. Plus, it's a mess in there and I don't want to see that all the time.
Yep yep
Yes, we have cats and they love the closet where they can create chaos at night and get their fur on everything.
Yes because my dog will go in there and pee if I don't
Yes! There's no reason to keep it open, plus our cat would have too much fun in there while we slept. 😹
Absolutely. And I always check behind the shower curtain.
and under the bed
Why leave it open. More importantly why heat or air condition the closet.
Yes. I have cats, and one of them in particular likes to get into mischief like knocking stuff down on purpose and chewing fabric, so I keep them out of my closet at night when I can't be watching and listening for accidents.
Edit spelling
Yep, all things get reset to their original positions before bed.
If I get up in the middle of the night and shit is different than how I left it we have a problem.
The monsters don’t care how old I am. The door gets shut and the toes stay under the cover.
My closet doesn't have a door. I'm not going to put one there because the closet is way too small for my monsters and that would be inhumane. They deserve to roam the house.
Same here, no door. My closet connects to the closet in my rabbit room as well, and I'd never trap a monster in there, the rabbit is too vicious.
Yes, I blame my mother. She taught me about the closet monster
Yeah, I think it's an extra layer of protection. I also look at creepy ghost stuff before bed for some reason and I think looking the door might keep ghosts out...for some reason
My 8 year old doesn't and it triggers me
Nope...in fact I can't remember when the last time I closed the closet door.... eeek
Yes, of course! Monsters will get me in my sleep if I don't.
I have to keep mine closed... the 🪴 I'm growing likes it's privacy.
Of course. The closet door, the bathroom door, and the door to the rest of the house. All closed. We're trying to have a civilization here.
I do. Even if I am lying in bed I get up to close it. I have no reason for it tjough
haha yes. keep those witches inside
Yes otherwise my cat would fuck around in there
I do. I can't sleep with an open closet it's scary. It's a big dark void in the room. If there's doors, they're closed.
im scared of the dark
I close it when I’m done using it, but mostly so I don’t run into it hanging open…
Yes, and my bathroom door, and my bedroom door. I may have been raised by narcissistic abusers but I wasn't raised by wolves.
Wait....there are people who don't close them?
Also, I once got up to use the bathroom in the middle of the night and noticed that the door to the hallway closet was ajar. I didn't think much of it and shut it.
Come morning, I didn't see my cat for breakfast. So, I called out his name. A pitiful meow came out from the closet. I accidentally kept him in there all night!
I still close the closet door AND refuse to let any limbs hang off the bed.
I hate sleeping with the door open im affraid robbers might come in or my parents unannounced i like it shut
Yes
All my doors in my house have to be closed EXCEPT the bathroom in my room. That one, I can’t stand to be closed.
Absolutely.
All of my kids leave their closet doors open all the time and i think they're very brave. :)
Yes but husband and I sleep naked so a little privacy is nice.
Yes, because there is a full-length mirror on it that shines my wife's bedside light into my eyes if that door isn't shut.
I have 2 closets. I took all 4 doors(sliding doors) off about 10 years ago. It made the room feel bigger.
Yes because it’s safer if there’s a fire
If I don’t, a lion or a witch might come out.
It's better to sleep with your door closed in case of a fire
Always. The damn cat gets in there and makes a mess. On the flip side I have to close it and block the junction where the doors slide open. The little twirl learned how to open the doors or push between them.
No, I took the doors off my closet, so I can just walk in whenever I want.
Duh. Obviously they can’t be penned from the inside so if there is anything in the closet, it’s locked in there forever
Why would I leave it open and sloppy looking?
Yes!
We have cats
Monsters, duh
lol mine is a slider and A pain to open close so it’s opened 90% of the time or more.
It’s actually good fire saftey to keep as many doors closed as possible when sleeping
I do it to keep the cats from eating my socks.
Yes
I do mainly because my cats like to run a muck in there but also I like doors closed unless it’s my bedroom
Just because my dog likes to take a shit in there if i don't.
In my bedroom, no. In the guest room, yes. The guest room closet is somethin else.
I don't have a closet door , its open concept so no monster can live there
Yeah. Not because of Monsters though. Because I know the huge mess will bother the hell out of me.
No. I'm owned by 2 cats that like to go into the closet and sleep, so the closet door stays open forever.
I only have a wardrobe (Bachelor apartment) and a small closet. Both of them stay closed. No need for them to be open and I don’t want to wake up and look into the yawning void, even though I have LED lights strung up on the far wall.
Of course!
Nah. The dogs would bark if there were any intruders. As a matter of fact it’s a big closet and a dog beds are on the floor. No bogeymen.
I do because I want the room as dark as possible. Open doors let in other light sources. Also, if someone comes in I want to hear the noise.
My mom and she’s 60 so yeah lol it’s ok!
nah don’t want to make the monsters feel locked in
My mom always said that open closet doors are bad luck - so mine are always closed. Is it true? Prolly not. But why take chances?
Damn right I do.
I don't even have a door on my closet. I took it off because it couldn't be opened with my bed and dresser in the room (it's a small room).
Yes and I run upstairs when I turn the lights off downstairs
Just socially acceptable irrational paranoia
Keeping the closet door closed minimizes the amount of dust in the closet. (On your clothes)
Yes so I can see the TV on the mirror when I'm on my side.
OMG yes, I cannot sleep with it open and my hubby laughs at me if he gets in bed with his open and I "umm hmm" him to get up and shut it. Ain't nothing going to be peeking out at me in the dead of night!
Why wouldn't you? Leaving it open just cuts your effective floors pace for no reason
I mean I guess unless you turn a closet into a decorative space, cuz then that makes sense
I have to keep my closed or I will wake up thinking I see someone. Already knowing it’s just my clothes but the mind is a crazy thing
I don’t really care but my wife made me get out of bed and shut the closet door last night. Apparently I’m an acceptable sacrifice if there are monsters, lol. We are both early 50s btw.
Hell yes.
Yes, there's still monsters in there and I'm in my mid 30s. 😆
No you leave it open so the monster doesn’t have the element of surprise!
No idea. I don’t have a closet but growing up our closets were always shut like any other door
Hell yeah!
I sometimes close mine but that's to keep the cat from puking in there
Yes I watch too many horror movies especially before bed.
Yes. I also have to close the laundry room door to keep the lint monster from attacking
I don't have a closet door but I have a hard time sleeping if my bedroom door is open. I keep thinking I'll look up and see someone looking in at me.
Yes
Doors leading to outdoors : check Bedroom door: check Closet door: check
It’s bedtime routine
The big dog dens in the closet, so nah. If he didn't I probably would though.
We keep the bedroom door open because he patrols the house all night.
Sometimes I get up and he and the cat are sitting side by side watching the street in front of the house.
Yes, because my cat jumps on top of it and then yowls at me.
Yes. And I check to make sure it’s latched in multiples of 3 or 5 based on my anxiety that day. OCD sucks.
Yeah, but not because of monsters. Because when you're half awake looking at familiar objects, they can look like other stuff.
Yes but because it’s cold in there!
Well.duh you have to because the 4th dimension opens up in there and will suck me in unless the door is shut.
I unfortunately can't... because Cat gotta Cat.
lol well I've never been afraid of closet monsters so no, but I do close my bedroom door. Just gives me a bit of comfort knowing someone who breaks in would have to break through my door and wake me up. Gives me time to grab my gun!
I keep it open because my room gets hot as fuck. want as much heat capacity as possible so it's more bearable
Yes but because i have an irrational fear of a house fire while i sleep. There was some fire safety instructional assembly thing at school one year and they showed the differences between the door open vs closed in a fire scenario and it freaked me out so i always close the door when i sleep.
do you actually have closets with doors? wow. bragging about luxuries like that is not what the online behavior experts call 'classy'. i hope someday i can afford a couple of doors. i do close the refrigerator door at night because the light keeps me up
Yes.
My wife. Can’t sleep with it open
I leave my closet doors open because my two closets face each other along a short hallway. Obviously if they faced my bed I would close them because, y’know, monsters.
Yes! I also close my kids’ closet doors too. Don’t wanna make it too easy for the imaginary monsters.
It will bug me until I get up and close it.
Yup and for the same reason I have to have some kind of blanket unless we're in the hottest time of the year. LOL. I don't want no demon getting me.
I would, but its a sliding door and it’s overflowing with my wifes shoes so its nearly impossible to close. Also we have several guard cats on duty
…yes! monsters inc scarred me for life!
Yes but mostly because my closet is a warmer temp than my room and I don't want it raising the bedroom temp. I want it cold while I sleep.
Why only when I'm going to bed? With the exception of when I'm actually using my closet, the door is otherwise closed 24/7
I'm the opposite, I have to have mine open so I can see for certain that there's nothing there, same with my room door.
Yeah so my AC doesn’t waste electricity trying to cool the closet
Yes, and the shower curtain must also be pulled back.
We tend to close all the doors, just case of fire, it slows the spread.
The closet it quite close to my bed so I need to keep it closed unless I'm getting stuff out or I'll kick/run into the closet door getting out of bed. I run into walls/tables/chairs enough as it is.
Haha and I jump to get into bed in case there’s a monster underneath there!
If i don't close the door, I can hear the groans from the refrigerator at night. At least that's where I've convinced myself those noises are coming from.
I do for two reasons. My ex wife always wanted the door open so she could hear the kids. Second, closing the door helps my bedroom to be dark and I sleep better without the light from outside coming in.
I still do it. I think the movie “The Ring” gave me some trauma as a child, lol.
Yes of course. I don't want the Boogeyman to get me
I do because I caught my cats trying to P in there once
i always leave mine open. i don’t have a convenient place to hang my towel after a shower so i hang it in the closet and leave the door open so it gets some air.
Oh hell yes!
I don’t even have closet doors, my closets have curtains in front of them.
I mean I am an adult but that doesn’t mean I want to mess around with the boogeyman
That’s where I keep the poltergeist clown
There's also the practical thing of getting less dust in your closet since it's not as exposed, and things not falling out.
I despised my closet door, so I took it off and hung a tapestry. I prefer the tapestry to be closed.
Yes. My wife gets upset when the cat pisses in her shoe.
Hell yeah, there are monsters in there.
Yes, but not to keep monsters in, mostly to keep the cat out
I do but because it’s neater. Makes the room feel peaceful and ready for sleeping.
Yes, if I learned anything from poltergeist, it was this
YES.
Yep, because dogs. Those fools can’t be trusted
You have to, or the monsters will get out.
I generally close the closet door at night because it takes me a while to completely wake up in the morning and I don't want to walk into the bloody thing--that hurts!
Does anyone else NOT do it?
I just do it because I don’t like lose ends, but yes I do want it closed. Maybe it’s because of spooky monsters 👹 👻😊
My closet now is the size of a shoe box so no. But other places I’ve lived. Yes 100%
Yup. Since i was in the third grade, Barnabas Collins has lived in my closet. If I leave it open, he will get out and bite my neck. He had moved with me numerous times. And vampires can't turn doorknobs.
Yes but mostly because I don’t have a reason to keep it open. And I’m also concerned about the monsters obviously, I’m not a psychopath
