Been asked to draw up a quiz for the family and struggling mightily - silly/niche/trick questions all welcomed!
My quiz team contained 2 history students and the question was "who was the next Russian to lead the Soviet Union after the death of Lenin?" My team instantly flagged this as a trick question. Stalin being Georgian ruled him out, there was then some debate if krushchev counted or was a Ukranian. After much debate we settled on Brezhnev as our answer. The actual answer: Stalin. My 2 furious team mates then tried to debate the host who said he didn't care and Georgia was "part of Russia" anyway.
Seems weird it was phrased as a trick question but then wasn't. They could have just asked "who was the next leader of the USSR after Lenin"
Could be one they got off the internet and someone had previously changed the answer either to make it easier or because they genuinely thought it was wrong, but kept the original wording.
He basically equated USSR and Russia despite them not actually being the same thing.
Yeah, and a decent quizmaster would have either already known that or given you the point anyway once you queried it.
So many these days just get the questions off the internet and have no interest in anything beyond reading them out.
TBF it is a lot of effort to write a proper pub quiz when you're just going to give the top prize to whoever can Google the best without getting caught.
I host my local pub quiz often, and we use SpeedQuizzing these days. SpeedQuizzing provide the questions and people answer on an app on their phone. You only have 10 seconds to answer and you also get bonus points for being fastest. It's a good format that solves the modern problem of pub quizzes being a googlefest.
Maybe I'm naive but I don't think many people cheat at the quizzes I go to. We don't on my team and often win or come second or third. I'd be interested to try a speed quiz but it sounds a bit hectic.
The quiz I go to has a no phones out policy, anyone seen with a phone on the table gets minus points, and have to leave it behind if going to the toilet etc. Seems rare but should be more common
This is the way to do it.
Someone once got booted on our quiz because they answered a text during one of the rounds. They were probably telling the truth, but rules are rules.
When the quiz starts; phones in pockets and on silent, unless you are on call, you then have to leave for the round if you have to answer.
Ok, thanks Finchy
