This was immensely triggering and I need to know if this is true at all. We were chatting about what kinds of people we’ll be in 10-15 years from now. He said that I’ll be much better mentally in the future because time will make those traumatic memories less clear and by slowly forgetting details of my past, I will be happier. He then compares it to a traumatic brain injury and say if I got whacked in the head (not in a threatening way) wouldn’t I forget everything and be healed? But that is in NO way similar to CPTSD.
Our bodies hold trauma. It changes our growth and development especially if it occurred during childhood. He wasn’t trying to be rude or anything but I’m shocked as to how little he understands. I don’t have any scientific data or whatever to prove him wrong so this is purely our opinions against one another.
I can’t even talk about this rationally with him because it’s so upsetting to think that, according to him, in 10 years I’ll just “forget” all the abuse I grew up with.
No. that is not how that works. your boyfriend clearly is very uneducated on this topic and needs to educate himself. you are correct, our bodies hold onto trauma, whether we'd like to forget or not.
