Please help me solve this debate between my daughter and I. She barely toasts her English muffin and I was always under the assumption that they aren’t fully baked and need to be toasted (like browned) to be “safe” to eat. Anyone? Thanks!
Are grocery store English muffins baked thoroughly before toasting?
Thank you!
All bread products are completely cooked unless the package specifically has instructions and labeling that it must be baked before consumption.
If they weren't fully cooked, there would be some indication on the package that tosting is required and instructions how to properly do so.
They also wouldn’t be found on the shelf in the bread section. They’d only be found in the refrigerated section…
Idk if maybe it depends on the brand, but Thomas's are definitely fully baked (usually they even have brown on the outside from being baked) and can be eaten untoasted. I only really eat that brand, so I can't speak for other brands.
Thank you. That’s the brand we buy also.
They are! I ate them just like your daughter and my bf started making them in a pan with butter wow game changer 😂 but it doesn’t bother me to eat them out of the package 🤷🏽♀️
Alright I learned about this and thought it was interesting so I’ll share lol. When you cook toast (or an English muffin!) on the stove in butter, the butter is caramelizing. When you use the toaster then spread butter, it’s only melting. That’s why diner toast and your bf’s English muffins taste so much better! Lol
Ahhhhh I see! I was just like wow that’s how that’s supposed to taste 🤣he changed my bagel game too lol
Wait by also cooking them in butter or do you have another secret lol
Same thing 🤣
Oh man I gotta try this haha
Your daughter is correct in this situation. Give her a high five for me.
Raw bread dough is just flour yeast and water most of the time. Even if they were par baked they would still be safe to eat.
Isn’t raw flour surprisingly dangerous to eat? Swear I read that somewhere
Raw flour can be contaminated, but that never stopped me from eating cookie dough and brownie batter. And anything with a raw egg has a small chance. For home use it's like 1 in 10k but in comercial use eggs are all mixed up together.
True dat!
Raw flour isn't safe to eat. It's a bit like raw eggs. It's not safe, but the chance of getting sick is relatively small.
I eat raw and undercooked flour and eggs on occasion (as have most of us), and have yet to get sick.
I only mention it because you make it sound as if there is no risk in doing so. I'd rather someone be aware of the small chance and make an informed decision, and get sick, then for someone to unknowingly feed their kid raw flour and not know the risks.
Like I'd eat raw cookie dough, but I wouldn't let my toddler do so.
Never knew anything about raw flour being dangerous. I feel like you’re pretty much taking as much of a chance eating anything, really.
Well, not really. Cooked foods are generally safer than raw foods. You can wash raw fruits and veggie, which lowers the risk even more. Can't really wash flour.
But people get sick eating raw spinach and salad mixes. There seems to be recalls on those every couple of years.
Flour can carry e.Choli and salmonella, pathogens I don't worry about too much, but young children can become dehydrated and more easily develop complications.
Again, if it's just me taking the risk, I take it. I'm aware, but not real worried about it.
Safe to eat out of the bag. They taste weird to me when they’re untoasted, though, but they’re not dangerous.
They’re safe, just bleh without toasting.
I believe to actually make an English muffin from scratch they are cooked in a pan like a pancake, not baked. FWIW
Interesting. Looked it up and while the site i checked said Comercial ones are baked and flipped halfway through, all the home recipes said use a frying pan. Very cool to learn, thank you
They're fully baked. Most people prefer them toasted but you can eat them straight from the bag.
Ty so much
It's not raw or unsafe to eat... just not as tasty by most accounts.
Same with PopTarts, Eggo Waffles, Trader Joes Crumpets
They are fully cooked, just like bread or bagels. Toast them if you like!
Why would someone not think that they are fully baked? Especially since most English muffins are found in the fully-baked bread aisle, and not a refrigerated case?
Don’t you split them open before you toast them? If so, do you not know the difference between raw dough and a baked crumb?
Not trying to shame, but I’ve never seen anyone not split one open before toasting, and if you do, I have difficulty understanding how you don’t realize it’s already baked?
Oh you mean a tea cake?? They’re bread. If they weren’t fully cooked you really need to be calling a health inspector or smth, raw flour can be dangerous
They are cooked. You don’t have to toast them.
Yes, English muffins are typically fully baked and safe to eat without toasting.
You can eat it right out of the package But it will taste better to toast it though.
They are fully cooked just like a loaf of bread. You can toast or not toast either one.
