"...why would you want to raise your cholesterol?"
"So I can lower it."
I don't know why your comment reminded me of this.
VGP = voluntary goosebumps power
Hey I can trigger but not suppress! How do you do it? Also is there anything useful or interesting about this random skill I have
I'd say that such a skill is pretty useless, besides maybe as a party trick. Suppressing the goosebumps is (at least for me) very similar to triggering them. If I want to trigger them, I imagine contracting an imaginary muscle that's floating above the nape of my neck. Then, a series of shivers start at the nape of my neck and gradually distribute along my spine, face and arms. If I want to suppress them, I have to imagine the same 'imaginary muscle', but now I have to try to keep it relaxed. I know that this all sounds crazy, but this is how it genuinely works for me.
I'm in my thirties and I've always been able to trigger goosebumps, but I didn't know you could suppress them too. The real crazy part is that your explanation made perfect sense to me, I have the exact same experience with it. And I was able to suppress them on the first try thanks to you !
Wait. Not everyone can do this? I kind of tense up somewhere up in my neck/ears and can get goosebumps everywhere. I can’t suppress them though
My grandma would like to have a word...
I feel like I’m top 1% in looks, charm, intelligence, and humor, but hard to confirm any of it.
Definitely top 1% in humility though!
Height - 6’8”. It’s a blessing and a curse. I can see over everyone at a concert while knowing everyone behind me is pissed at my existence.
Hello fellow 6'10" person!
Honestly I don't even think it's 50% positives. You can see over a crowd. That can be nice at a concert or something.
When I was single, my height made it easier to pick up chicks for a one night stand in the bar. Not really any easier for actually dating, but for picking up some strange it was helpful.
Aside from that, it's all downsides. Finding vehicles with enough leg room, pants and shorts that are long enough, the constant back pain from having to bend over at odd angles to do things, etc etc all outweighs the good to me.
We have a couple of really cool venues for all kinds of shows here in town but I can't really go to any of them because the distance between my hip and knee is longer than the amount of room between rows of seats. I tried to go to a show a few years back where they were showing star wars but a live orchestra was doing all the music. I ended up having to stand in the back.
Also, good god the top of vending machines are filthy.
I had to laugh at this. I'm 5'3". Everytime I clean the top of my fridge, while standing on a chair, I think, "Good God, what if I had tall company? I'd better clean this more often."
I don't judge, I get that most people can't see it or reach it.
I remember one time when I first started dating my wife (who is 5'3") and she was sick. I went over to her condo and was going to make her some chicken noodle soup.
I went to grab a mixing bowl off the top of her cabinets to put all the veggies scraps in from the prep work and it had like 3 inches of dust in it. She was like "Yeah, that's decorative and was here when I moved in".
To be fair, I didn't use any of the cabinets or drawers in my house that were below knee level. That was just way too far down there.
It works out perfect now that we are married. She uses the low storage and I use the high storage!
Also, good god the top of vending machines are filthy
lol! This is hilarious. I never would've thought of that. Thanks for the laugh. And I'm sorry about all the other drawbacks of being so tall.
* from a 5'7'' person who doesn't take it for granted that the world is built for people my height
I’m 6’6” and encountering any of you “taller than me” people really weirds me out. I think it’s just my brain conditioned to physically look down at people, so when you super tall people my brain cannot compute.
I’m also 6’6” and this is so true. I play basketball, and so when I see people on the court taller than me, it feels normal because I’m used to it in that context. However, seeing a 7 footer in the wild is a lot more “brain doesn’t know how to interpret this info” than it is on the court.
My cousin is seven feet tall. He used to wear a shirt that said "No I don't play basketball".
I knew a pair of 6 foot 9 twins who had FAQ cards that said that, along with:
- The weather is fine
- Yes, our parents are tall
- No, we aren't the tallest twins in the world
My 6’0” sister had that one.
This is interesting to think about. I guess I could compare it to growing up in rural Florida. Nothing is EVER up, and nothing is usually ever taller than a tree. My only trip to NYC i had been there a whole day before I ever really looked UP and it was mind blowing. Could not compute.
6'3" and this still holds true. Looking up at people is simply weird. Makes me feel intimidated.
GTFO shrimp, grownups are talking. (I’m only 6’4” lol)
If you walk with your mouth open can you taste the sky?
Five niner reporting for duty.
I'm 6'f, so definitely taller than most women and many (most?) men. I ran into the women's basketball team at my local college recently and that was an odd reality, to be dwarfed by women. Its so unusual that a woman is taller than me, but a group of them?! Weird.
Lmao I'm only 5'10 but I passed a guy in Walmart the other day who was SO DAMN TALL. It was absurd.
I must have come up right under his chest I was absolutely baffled. I had to stop myself from commenting on him like one of those annoying people. That's not even who I am.
I literally opened my mouth and then realized I can't do that because I'm sure he unfortunately has to deal with that constantly
I'm 6'f and get all the comments a lot, especially since I'm lanky, I somehow look taller. So I've learned to roll with the questions throughout my life. But then a bittersweet thing started happening at a certain age, when people would ask "did you play" not "do you play" basketball. It was an odd reality to be faced with, but I will won't ask other giants how tall they are
Another random drawback is the damn spiderwebs that your head hits because nobody else is tall enough to run into them first.
Easy. Just follow the other dude who was 6'8".
My buddy is 6'9" and he hates being as tall as he is. He has problems fitting into most vehicles due to his size.
I'm a car guy and even at 6'3" I have problems. I haven't sat in a mid-engined C8 Corvette, but I've been in a few C7s and could never get comfortable. I either had to slide the seat forward and have my knees hit the steering column or slide the seat back to the point it hit the rear firewall and raise the seatback so that my head hit the roof. Even if one was in budget, I wouldn't buy one because I'd hate driving it after 5 minutes
I hate and envy you.
I lust and loathe you.
If you earn more than $60k per year, you are in top 1% globally.
Well you got an "extra" kidney. Maybe do something with that.
And a butthole. Grandma always said, "If you have a butthole, you have a source of income."
Nice. So I am in the rest 99%.
Recovery from traumatic spinal injury. Went from waist-down paralysis to walking with a walker within 2 months, walking unassisted within 4 months, now I walk 3 miles every day.
Edit. Thank you for all the positive feedback. My accident was about 17 months ago. I was in a rehabilitation facility for 2 months and then did PT 3x per week for 6 months after I was released and I’ve kept a rec center membership to workout and swim ever since. Water movement and microdosing psilocybin were absolute game changers but you can’t accomplish anything if you don’t do your PT exercises. I still have a limp and I likely won’t ever be able to jump or sprint again but I’m just happy to be walking.
You've completed the training montage. You now need to obtain a weapon of great value, masterful quality, or sentimental attachment before setting off to hunt down the BBEG and win The Final Conflict.
I love Reddit
As someone who works in a rehab setting with patients who have traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, amputations, etc., it makes me so freaking happy to hear about success stories like yours. Thank you so much for sharing, and you are amazing!
According to Spotify, I am in the top 1% of Jimmy Buffet's monthly listeners.
Is that from your year-end info? I think I was top 3% for the national anthem of Togo. Would like to meet the others above me.
In 2021 I listened to a disgusting amount of Ryan Adams. Probably an average of around 5-6 hours a day for at least 8 months of that year.
I finished in the top 0.05%, but wasn't his number one listener on Spotify that year. Whoever was, they have my sincere pity. Ain't no way someone emotionally and/or physically healthy beat me in that one.
My buddy is in the top 0.01% of Skyrim soundtrack listeners
Banging my wife(hopefully)
You’re definitely top 10%, at least in this thread.
I also choose this guy's wife.
You hope you are in the top 1% of the guys that are banging your wife?
400 lb weightloss in 2 1/2 yrs at 62 yrs old. proof in my profile history post
Damn I thought my 200 in my 30s was impressive. Congratulations!
You're both pretty badass for this. Respect!
It still is and you should be proud.
That is insanely impressive!
I'm one of less than like 14 or 15 people who have ever completed a Calendar Year Triple Crown. That's hiking the Appalachian, Pacific Crest, and Continental Divide trails in one year. Mine was like 7,400 miles and took 9.5 months averaging about a marathon a day for 290 days. And I also did it with camera equipment and documented the whole thing.
Here's a rough cut of the whole year: https://youtu.be/Ammy0tBBalQ?si=ta3ie7GptkL82biJ
And of all those people that hiked the CYTC only one other person has hiked through New England in the ice and snow, everyone else would goto the desert section of one of the other trails when the AT became too ice and snow covered. I spent over 200 miles battling insanely steep ice covered trails moving at less than 1 mile per hour, with 18-20hr days to get through that section.
Dude chill, we were asking for 1%, not ~0.00000019%… Leave some space up there for the rest of us!
(Tbh though that’s the coolest thing I’ve heard in a long while and massive respect for achieving this!!!!!!!)
I doubted your math... I need to apologize.
Also agree this is insanely cool (and no way in hell I could complete all three in three years, let alone a single year.)
Coolest in the thread
First off, username checks out.
Second, I love Reddit because you’ll just stumble into people that have done some of the coolest shit imaginable so casually
Haha thanks! Speaking of the username I think my account is a cool document of how normal people can achieve pretty crazy things through just consistent effort.
When I started this reddit account back in like 2012 or 2013 I was making videos about gaming and fitness and hadn't even heard of the trails or run more than like 5 miles at a time ever.
Then discovered the AT in 2016, hiked that, took 205 days to do that one trail and it about broke me.
Got more into hiking, did more trails, got into running and ran some ultras 50 and 100 milers. Worked as a hotshot fighting wildfires. All those experiences built my endurance and confidence in my ability to endure just tough situations.
And so that's how over about a decade a gamer who hates running can go hike across the country 3x. These insane goals aren't achieved overnight, it's just a long process of incremental steps and really any normal person can gon on to do some pretty amazing things if they just take incremental steps over the course of many years.
There's actually a YouTube and twitch channel with your Reddit name, all about mental health for gamers :)
You win. That's astounding.
Also, Quadzilla has to be in the top 1% of trail names.
What do you do for a living?
Lots of things! The key to doing this stuff is keeping expenses low, so no house payment, no car payment, no rent payment, no kids to feed.
Army paid for my college so no student debt.
I worked seasonally as a wildland firefighter before going on the CYTC. and then I've had lots of various businesses and somehow always manage to make ends meet.
Got some sponsors for the CYTC year as well.
Now I'm making more videos and training people online, mostly people who want to thru hike while living in SE Asia. Again expenses are real low like sub 1500/month over here so it gives me time to be able to pursue goals.
Woah
Dude. I watched all of your episodic videos of your CYTC, and then now I've watched your documentaries too. I hope this comment being on the top of this post gets you the views your content deserves. Props to you for such a cool accomplishment!
Yes. Saw your video a week or so ago. Congrats. I love your mentality of addressing the adventure head on. I’m weak and would tap out because I’m a pessimist. Your outlook on everything was awesome.
I've been following you since you started documenting your hikes. Attempted my own AT thru in 2017. Love your stuff!
This is really cool! Congrats!
Way to go!!! Keep up the good work.
i used to be ranked #146 in rockband 2 on drums, had some regional time trial records on mario kart wii, and was in the 0.3% percentile for K/D ratio in Doom 2016 multiplayer.
now i play platform fighters competitively and i suck balls
Oh shit! I was rank 977 in S&D on MW3 (prime mw3, before the mods n shit) & rank 1001 in MW2 S&D (also before mods). 90+ days played on both
that's awesome! i loved old mw2 and 3, black ops, games were incredible. i think i had about 3 full weeks of playtime in 2 as a teenager. good times.

I'm in the 1% of Social Security Disability recipients who got off of disability and into a job making >$40,000.
You should be very proud.
Where did you get the 1% statistics from?
It would be 1% in most mid western states , not as informed about others but - most disability folk depending on condition, rather not work, because works is less benefit and more cost given our shitty healthcare system , annual report on disabilities in 2021 and im sure not much has changed
Dude, I just got a job and am currently in the process of submitting wages to get off SSDI. Congrats!! I can’t wait to be in the club with you.
Side question, does the 40,000 matter in the long run? I know that in order to be on ssdi you can’t have a monthly income over 1400(ish).
I'm a black man with green eyes.
Edit- I've posted a pic on my profile.
Running. My mile, 5k, half, and full marathon times are all top 1%, which basically means I'm a relatively fast amateur. The real pros are completely out of sight nearly from the start. It's hard to convey just how much faster elite runners are than even the most dedicated hobbyist.
How fast is 1% in a 5k?
Sub 18 min, generally.
lmao i do 5k in about 4 months, how close am i to the 1% from the other side
Believe it or not, you're still above average, at least in America. Apparently, something like 90% of people over the age of 30 will never sprint again in their lives. Not sure about the validity of that Stat, but from what I've seen, it sounds true
Jesus. My fastest time as a teenage girl was 19:20. I remember when a tiny twig of a lass named Kathy got into my school and basically lapped me running like... 16's. And our boys team was in the 15's.
It’s wild to watch those time lapses of a pro runner vs a top tier amateur. Looks like the pro is riding a bike relative to the amateur.
It’s the same in all amateur vs pro sports. I played in a pickup basketball game with some D1/D2 recruits one of which was a future lottery pick who played at Notre Dame. I clearly didn’t belong on the court with any of them, but the lottery pick made it look like he was playing against toddlers.
I run OCR races. Done a bunch, top10% at the Spartan Killington Beast. So that puts me pretty high up there right? I thought it would be cool to run the Boston marathon. I wont come close to winning, but it would be an experience. To qualify to even be there Id have to run better than my 1 mile PR, for 32 miles. There is just no comparison from a decent runner, to a good runner, to elite.

Are they on Amazon? If not get them on Amazon and self publish and make sure to list them to the most niche category you can because there ARE people who will read your book, there’s an audience for everything. And you will grow as a writer including which topics you want to write about. also mail everyone who buys it and nicely ask them to send you criticism if they aren’t going to rate 4 or 5/5. Keep it up dude if it’s your dream to write you can make it happen.
DM me links to your books and I’ll read them as long as they aren’t gay romance novels.
Thanks mate, they're not on Amazon, publishing isn't really the same in France and self publishing is the way to go if you want to just "publish something on the side" but I've heard from pro authors that if you self publish, you're very likely to get stuck in a small loop where you'll never get more than a few books out, not enough to even buy yourself a coffee every week. So for now I'm trying to get published by big publishers and for now I got some nice answers, but all negatives (some were enthusiastic but had no room in their catalogue and promised to "call me back" in a few years)
My second book is an RPG rulebook and I just released it monday as an e-book on Patreon, but I'm having trouble finding where to promote it.
