The producers have to have hours and hours of film. To make it concise and suspenseful, a lot of good material from the winners have to get cut. I would watch a re release of a season after the fact that only focuses on the winner. Short season (4-5 episodes) with the winner explaining the thought process.

You are right, you still need to tell a story. The story will be what was the activity that put you over the edge. Fishing? Your shelter? Food storage? Stalking that big animal? Or what was that big thing that didn’t work out that set you back?
