NYC with money is basically do anything you can fathom in a city. Then buy a beach house on Fire Island and a country estate in the Hudson Valley. Leave for the winter. It would be my plan.

Jersey City, Long Island City, Downtown Brooklyn are your friends.

The easiest way to spot a European in NYC is to look for an overly tight luxury branded t-shirt, busy with logos. Or designer belts on men.

I feel like New Yorkers flash brands with their accessories, Rolex, Nike shoes, Hermes Bag.....but we kinda shy away from logos on clothes...don't get me started on soccer jerseys.

It is. Newark Ave near historic downtown is a pedestrian mall, with plenty of stuff to keep you occupied. The Path Train gets you to FiDi in 2 stops (6 mins once a train arrives). The Holland Tunnel gets you there via car. Super easy cab rides to Newark Airport for international travel. If you have a vehicle getting out of the area is mad easy.

Stop by Cangianos for a sandwich, #3 is a personal favorite. Or Hudson Hall on a weekend for some day drinking with the locals.

You are gonna be looking in Jersey City and Hoboken.

Put pins in Hamilton Park JC and Church SQ Park in Hoboken and try and get as close as possible. They won't be American style suburbs but it's close to what my European friends call suburbs.

You'll be using the PATH train, it's a fine system except after midnight, but it will get you to FiDi quickly. You can have a car if you like.

You can kinda find suburbs in Bay Ridge west of 3rd Ave.

Actual burbs like Mamoroneck, Babylon, Tarrytown etc would require you taking a commuter train. Your commute would be closer to 80 mins.

K Town (32nd btwn 5th and 6th) is always a good bet for dinner. Yoon Haeundae Galbi is a personal fav, Food court. 32 will have cheap options.

Rudy's for a drink. Beasts and Butterflies if you want a cocktail and a view.

Grand Central is pretty at night

Otherwise I'd be on a train headed to the East/West Village or LES.

Well Hat Club if you want 5950. Goorin Brothers have some well made basic caps. Melin is you need it waterproof.

Gothic Renaissance, Trash and Vaudeville, Search and Destroy, The Hunt, The Great Frog, Enchantments, John Varvatos.

So, there's a lot. Mercury Lounge, Pianos, Baker Falls, Bowery Ballroom, Irving Plaza, Rockwood, Bowery Electric, Webster Hall, Music Inn, Nublu, The Bitter End, LPR, Arlene's, Cafe Wha, pier 17, red lion, Gramercy Theater.....and many more.

Ohmyrockness.com is usually a good place to start.

Can you believe they allow broads?

/S truly and deeply sarcasm.

Have a neighborhood you like in mind. Don't move to Midtown. Have all your taxes and financial documents ready to go before applying anywhere. Good Luck.

Ok. So no to this plan. Stay in Long Island City or Downtown BK if you want to save money. Do not get a car, do all of NYC and DC on public transit. The Mega Bus or Amtrak will get you to DC cheaply and quickly. Once your DC trip is over THEN rent a car.

It isn't where I would normally put 3 tourists. What's with the car?

I get it, and it's a personal choice for everyone. But my advice? Here a lot of us LIVE in the city and SLEEP in our apt.

I'd take a smaller spot in the West Village/Chelsea proper over a luxury spot in Midtown anyday.

Agreed. OP, even 5 blocks south and things get so much better.

Gonna try for a nuanced answer cause that particular area has some quirks. It's doesn't fall into a traditionally "unsafe" definition at all. But anything close to Penn/Moynihan is gonna have the problems of a major transit hub. Uber scams, tourist scams, transients, and plenty of homeless.

Like listen, you are gonna be fine...it's not "dangerous" at all....but you will get dudes trying to hustle you, beggers, honking horns, and the problems that come with a tourist heavy transit hub.

Oooh good call. Excellent central location.

Np, assuming you are on a school teacher budget....check out the MOXY by Webster Hall, great location, usually ok prices.

Ha no worries OP...hey it would help if we knew what venue you were going to. For example Radio City and MSG are ridiculously safe and easy to get to...if you were say going to the knockdown center I'd give some general advice about not taking unsolicited Ubers.

We try not to walk and smoke, people behind us get caught in a wake of smoke. Stay in one spot, on a side street near the cars.

Edit: also fyi, around 3-330 when school lets out and the kids have flooded the street we try to keep in under wraps just to be polite.

Ok not a bad post, good on you. We got parents coming to the big city trying to let a little loose without the kids but also have good trains to see some sights. A budget would help a bit but....

I typically recommend the Union Sq area as a base. US has lots of trains, borders lots of cool neighborhoods, and will be close to late night eats and drinks.

Williamsburg also works better than a lot of people expect. The L is usually very convenient, plenty of Ubers, and restaurants and bars geared towards 30-40 somethings.

I like the MOXY and Indigo brands personally.

Plenty of history in both, the East Village is drenched in NYC history.... McSorelys is a must.

September huh? Still plenty of time to figure out your gang affiliation. Who are you looking to rush for?

I'd recommend good health insurance with plenty of dental coverage. Some training in unarmed combat and small arms would be nice.

Remember, head down, zig zag movements, no sounds, remember your training. STAY FROSTY!

Brooklyn Pride is next weekend. Plenty of others will post up along the route with a cooler. I don't think the cops will bother you as long as the bottles are sealed.

ABC Beer

Union Hall in Park Slope if you wanna come out.

Anthology Film Archives if you like very niche cinema.
