Black Balsam is loaded with car campers. Like people with Coleman tents and styrofoam coolers ignoring the no campfires and bear canister requirements. It’s also frankly a pretty crappy spot to camp unless the weather is perfect. We had some serious wind whip up one night and it flattened some of the car camping tents on the bald. I’d rather camp somewhere north or south of there and come up to the bald for views around sunrise and sunset so I could choose a more protected site unless the weather was perfect. Once you get away from that area though the trail is pretty quiet.

I know this sub is kinda anti rope or tools but if the circumstances require critical gear having some stuff to help repair or make makeshift gear is pretty important. I think it’s crazy not to carry several feet of rope. You can also steal some from your bear hang rope in a pinch.

I do the same. Unlimited fizzy water is a bonus. Also I don’t keep my seltzer at any different pressure from my beer and I don’t mind it. It’s not as carbonated as soda or typical seltzer but it’s fine. My homebrew shop carries various soda extracts so when I want soda I just pour some root beer extract and vanilla extract in a glass along with some simple syrup and add carbonated water. Turns out nice and I don’t have to drink five gallons of root beer.
