Hey Reddit! I recently put together a cheap airband receiver kit I found on eBay and perhaps unsurprisingly the reception is very poor. I've tried tower & ATIS freqencies at my local airport with a handheld Yaesu FTA-550 also monitoring and nothing but light static gets picked up by the board. I've only been able to pickup a test transmission on 122.8 MHz using the handheld transceiver but honestly I think the receiver antenna was just saturated with RF at such close range.

I've tried the obvious panning the frequency knob and playing with squelch volume, but after reading deeper into the instructions and circuit theory, I think my local oscillator isn't correctly tuned. I don't have any test equipment, but I read I might be able to connect my computer's sound card to the antenna and emit a wave at a known frequency to be able to determine the intermediate frequency it's tuned to? Any suggestions for someone who's jumped into the deep end of radio electronics?
