I have the in-ear Anker A40s and over-ear Bose QC. Gotta say I prefer the over-ear ones. Personal preference, but the Ankers aren't as good at NC and make my ears sore after ~2 hours of wear.

We were looking at the same thing. We ended up going with a flight. The ferry time isn't too bad, if I remember correctly (check generic ferry search site). However, the drive from Heraklion (where most ferries dock) and Chania adds ~2 hours. Our flight ended up being more expensive than the ferry+bus (we're not renting a car), but that's well worth the time and hassle saved IMO.
I'd be embarrassed by matching shirts in the room while defending. Our department/committees expect donuts and coffee during presentations. Maybe you could help by purchasing and picking up those?
My PI requires 1 first author per year. Definitely the quantity over quality kind of advisor.
Being a woman sucks. I try to plan things around my days. I'm not brave enough to deal with the inconvenience and pain during a trip that's supposed to be enjoyable. A lot of you are better than me, best of luck!
