It is the way I recommend to people who don't have deep religious/cultural aspects of their wedding. For my wife she I we did the courthouse ceremony and then just went out to dinner and invited everyone over to our apartment for Mario Kart and Rock Band. And then we had a full reception/party for the extender family and whatnot. Best of both worlds.
My wife and I did the legal ceremony at the courthouse and then just had a big party/reception that following year. It's the way to do it, imo.
