That is a register cover. It covers your register so things don’t talk down your ductwork and you don’t break your ankle. Turn the little dial if you’d like to shut off the air from coming from that register. Spray paint a different color if you think it’s ugly or buy new ones in a different style. But put that one back for now, it’s fine.
