New Shimano 105 only comes with hydraulic brakes, unless something very odd going on with a mashup of parts. Still, they have chat function on their site, ask them to be sure. Looks a lovely bike and a great deal at that price.

I live in Doncaster. Much less going for the place than York, obviously. Logistics though, 20 minutes to York on the train and in the mix for your wife’s commute. Much cheaper property. As others have said though, commuting is rubbish, no point in both of you doing it, under secondary school age, a much easier life having childcare, schooling, living and working in a small radius .

If you did come to Donny, living in the Town Fields or Bennetthorpe areas between town and the racecourse. Good cycling infrastructure to get to the station under 2 miles. Or north of the river at Cusworth os Sprotborough Rd areas.

Decathlon are great, but look like you get less of their range in USA.

Www.Lusso.bike are superb, and ship worldwide.

There’s nearly 30 miles northward from the bottom of Sheffield up to the Humber.

Middlesbrough is in Yorkshire. Always was, always will be.

Teesside is just a catch-all term for the conurbation, doesn’t have the same specific meaning in local government terms anymore, Tees Valley is the current name for the new mayor zone. Back in the 60s it was thought that government of a conurbation would be better than separate parts would be better so the County Borough of Teesside was created, which later became County Cleveland when Hartlepool joined in.

However just having a local council difference, doesn’t change what county you are in, otherwise York wouldn’t be in North Yorkshire, which would be daft. I’m in Doncaster, and South Yorkshire County Council is long gone, but I’m still in South Yorkshire, and historically too the West Riding.

Most importantly, I grew up in Middlesbrough and back in those days Yorkshire cricket wasn’t confined to Headingley and Scarborough festival, and has played at grounds all over the county. They played at Acklam Park, also the rugby club, on Green Lane. Played there before Teesside or Cleveland were a thing, right up to 1996 when Cleveland was abolished.

On Old Street, between Hooton Pagnell and Hampole, Yorkshire, UK. It's called Old Street because the Romans came along and built their new one a mile or so to the east.

I think you should put it on a bicycle and go for a ride.

An ebike would be lucky to last a couple of days locked in the street. Get a folder, take it inside.

Put a coat on, a peak cap if you wear specs like me. Hoods not usually very useful, never stay where you want them or stay put when you turn your head so you can't look back easily.

99% of major roads have an alternative quieter route or cyclepath. Yes it takes a little longer, but prolongs your life/sanity/nerves.

(Human version) The set of bearings that let you steer a bicycle

My bike is feeling a bit grabby and crunchy when steering. When we get a nice evening to sit out and fettle it properly, I will swap the bearings. It’s easier if you warm the frame under a hot tap and chill the bearings so one expands and the other contracts, rather than just using loads of force.

Neoprene gloves can be good. Specialized and Altura make some, but workwear brands can be just as good, Unger are made for the window cleaning trade and have good dexterity and last well.

Whitby is so beloved we protect it by making people who want to take the train to it travel to Middlesbrough first. It remains delightfully unspoiled.

Where you can, use nylock nuts on fixings, less hassle than loctite.

If you went over to r/bicycletouring to talk racks, Tubus would always be well respected and trusted. I’ve had mine for a decade or more on a Fargo and toured on and off road.

It's not about whether the bike is suitable or fun, and all about whether I leave it unattended out of my sight. No locks stand against portable power tools, so the cheap town bike works for transport needs. I still wouldn't want to lose that either, but it would cost under £150 to replace.

Behold the sexy beast:

Wild garlic smell through the woods this week has been wonderful.

Nice, and the wind dropped today. I rode up from Doncaster to near Boroughbridge yesterday and the headwind was ridiculous, got up this morning and had a little shout at the sky. So many bikes out on the roads north of York this morning.

America tends to go with bug-eye, but in UK we call it Frog-eyed sprite. Either way, great fun.

It’s a long way from Sussex, but Cycle Heaven in York do Gazelle on cycle to work schemes. Good people, and know their stuff.
