As a bench stone user, I typically float around 6-9lbs of pressure for lower grits. What amount of pressure do we typically aim for on a guided system?

Would a wider stone though create less work? Or is there something I’m missing here?

Guided Sharpening System Stone Sizes

Is there a reason why we don't typically see rod guided sharpening systems with stones larger than 1" wide? My buddy just picked up some 4x1.6" stones and he's really happy with it.

How come we don't see 6x2" stones on a guided system? I've never used a guided system before and have been a freehand sharpener for a couple of decades and am trying to understand why we typically see 1" as the limit.

edit: referring to hapstone, tsprof, professional adjust and those styles

you could use a leather strap and wrap it around the stump / nailing it in or screwing in 8 screws - this creates little slots. i hold my tongs and hammers in this way.

Balance is really important. A knife that has a really high HRC will get sharper and hold an edge longer. It will also hold a dull edge longer / will take longer to sharpen with the sacrifice of durability.

I wouldn't really compare a bad steel vs a good steel, but instead different levels of hardness. but a nice durable 59 hrc blade that can take a beating can get pretty sharp quickly depending on the edge geometry and is much easier to sharpen back to sharp vs a super hard steel. There is a trade off will sharpness / durability to keep in mind. it all depends on the application.

When I first started making leathercraft knives people would be so insanely impressed with a 64 HRC skiving knife. Then when it would go dull, they just didn't understand why they couldn't get it back to factory sharp. It's a complete PITA to sharpen something that hard for most novices. i started lowering my HRC down to 60-62 nowadays and send sharpening videos to my clients. they find it much easier to sharpen and maintain than my first gen knives.

Multiple directions is how jewelers do it too, is the best way because you’ll easily see off the previous pattern still exists. That’s a good progression

you want to sand in different directions and remove the previous scratch pattern completely before moving grits. If it's taking forever to remove the scratch patterns, you are jumping too high in grit sizes.

USPS has been a hit or miss for me. I ship from a small town in california and it they are closed on the weekends and also don't scan the package in. I have scheduled pickups with USPS and half they time they don't show up.

where is this bundle? I've been searching for days and can't find it.

Up for sale is a like new, barely used Chartermade Japanese Leather Knife. Price lowered to $140 Zelle Only - ships via UPS Ground (3-9 days) within the states or USPS Priority 2-3 day (+$4).

Will ship item same day if purchased before 1pm PST.

Learn something new everyday. Didn’t know they had clear back then.

are the ones with blue print on the left knockoffs? I've never seen those.

an affordable 8x13 variable wen lathe with chisel set will run you like ~$250. https://www.amazon.com/WEN-LA3421-3-2-Amp-Variable-Benchtop/dp/B0BXKBBR1F?th=1 comes with a chisel set too. I have this one at my home shop for handles and it works great. the only thing i'd add is probably a good chuck for hardwoods. you can probably get a lot of fun and use out of it practicing with construction wood out of the box.

it's a challenge and you have to constantly keep your tools sharp. lots of post sanding involved but wear PPE. that dust is a skin irritant and it's pretty bad to breathe. i had to sharpen every minute or so, not to have the blank catch. I wouldn't say it's super difficult but it takes time.

super thin ca glue really helps stabilize it while turning. you can sand it up to 2000 grit then finish with ca glue and it'll have an amazing high gloss finish.

do you have the new model or the old model flow control? I'm using the new one and never had a leak issue.

edit: old model is smooth and the new model has waves on the front cap

I have a psychiatrist that just talks. Doesn’t prescribe me but gives me amazing insight and different views on how to handle things. Always feel better and function better after a call.

The therapist was pretty trash though after I stopped gambling I think 5 or 6 years ago. They assigned me this 26 year old that had no clue.

I will tell you 100% the psychiatrist will be better than any Reddit comment you will get. Really dives in and finds the roots of the problems and what to do if you have a relapse or intrusive thought.

workout, get into hobbies, stay away from self destructive things and thinking. time will heal and it's time to work on yourself. attend GA meetings in person, better than zoom imo. always remember, it can get worse.

edit: i forgot to mention - get professional medical help. this was the biggest thing for me was to see a psychiatrist throughout my bouts of depression and anxiety. Not a therapist, but a psychiatrist that can possibly help you medically with intrusive thoughts and your addictions.
