Non-ED is fine; that's what I shoot with, but the ED version is going to pretty much be guaranteed to be better.

I'd say if you're looking to save money and are just a casual target shooter, non-ED works. If you're OK with spending a little extra, however, get the ED version.

The paid creation kit bounty sniper rifle can be modded to do EM damage, and will 1-hit drop everything (I'm well past NG11+).

Sad that it's the only one with that kind of damage, though.

I just stick a couple PB turrets facing the rear on my ships; That allows me to keep an enemy's shields down while I'm boosting away.

I have a Taurus TX22 Compact that I absolutely love. It's small, and has an optics cut should you decide to go that route. Taurus has taken some grief in the past, but they tend to be pretty decent right now for the price (I paid just over $300 w/ taxes for mine).

Just make sure you're buying good ammo. CCI Mini-mags shoot well out of it and will be good for training. I've also seen good things from Federal Punch for the self-defense side (including ballistic tests), but that is a more expensive round (for 22LR, at least, aside from competition-grade stuff).

The most important thing I've seen with reliability in the TX22 is making absolutely sure you load the magazine properly; It's way too easy to mis-load a round and get a failure to feed.

As far as general reliability goes, light primer strikes are the biggest potential ding assuming you're using quality ammo that can cycle your pistol well, but I shoot 22LR exclusively (I shoot for the hobby, mostly ELR) and haven't had a light primer strike in ages.

Since 22LR is quite a bit cheaper, you get the opportunity to train a lot more with it.

Of course, as others have noted a revolver can be a great option in 22LR; A good double-action revolver can negate the issue of light primer strikes just by allowing you to give the trigger another pull to cycle to the next round.. But then you also lose the ammo capacity of a magazine-fed 22LR (depending on your state you can get some magazines with 20+ round capacity).

Watched this one super-close for a while; It was WAY too close for comfort, and the difference in spending (including outside spending) was pretty stark, making the fact that it was so close even scarier.

The big thing to consider is engagement range.. the more tighter the range the less a rifle is useful.

Most self defense scenarios tend to happen at close range based on available research, so a pistol may be the best option, but rifles do tend to be easier to operate with accuracy.

Another vote for pepper spray, at least initially.

Firearms have lots of hidden costs. Secure storage can cost more than the firearm itself in the case of cheaper firearms, and in order to be able to operate a firearm properly you'll need to train regularly.. Which means lots of ammo. Unless you're going with 22LR (most folks wouldn't recommend it for self defense) you're going to be paying quite a bit to train regularly on the ammo costs.

Also, you need to decide whether you're going the conceal-carry route or just having something for home defense.

If home defense, you've got some good budget options and a variety of choices, including rifles and shotguns.

If conceal carry, then as others have suggested modern Taurus pistols are pretty good for the budget, but you've got even more costs to worry about there beyond storage and ammo.. As in holsters. A good comfortable CC holster can cost a chunk from what I've seen.

So, for the immediate situation, pepper spray.. And rely on that even after you get a firearm until you get a good amount of training and comfort in operating your firearm as it relates to defensive purposes. You want the operation of whatever your firearm is to become a rote, mechanical process without having to think about it.

Taurus is better than it used to be, and there's good aftermarket support if there are any issues, so no shame from me. I've had 2 Taurus pistols (both TX22s - one the original, and my current is the Compact) and love them. Solid shooters, easy to maintain, and they just plain work.

You don't need the latest greatest from Beretta or FN to have a good shooter (although I have been lusting after the Beretta 80X Cheetah).

Just to emphasize the point others are making (or are sure to make):

22LR is a lethal round like most rounds; A single shot may not always stop a target, but that's where the "swarm of bees" analogy comes into play.

Where 22LR fails as a defensive round is it's reliability; Rimfire rounds can't guarantee successful firing just because of the nature of how they are made.

This makes traditional magazine-fed semi-auto pistols/rifles a less than ideal option for situations where you need reliability.

As an alternative, however, a good revolver can get around it; Since it doesn't rely on the round going bang to cycle, a revolver will just skip to the next round in the cylinder with the trigger pull.

There have been some interesting developments in 22LR defensive ammo; Federal Punch and CCI Uppercut both get fairly high marks. Combine those in a good revolver and you've got some potential, especially if you're recoil-sensitive like me (severely arthritic).. But in my case I shoot for relaxation first and foremost.

I typically use the Recon A1 unsupressed and just switch to the 5.7 for close range. If I'm expecting swarms or mostly close quarters I'll take the mp7, or the m4a1.

Anyway, I actually just shuttered the site beginning of the year. The rise of fast-turnaround SEO-focused content farms (think a bunch of sites like GameRant sprouting up that rely on AI content - my guess) really hurt my site's performance to the point of where I was getting 1/3rd of the traffic I used to, and I had already basically stopped video production due to limited time available and health issues.

A blog alone is going to be more challenging right now depending on the niche.

SUPPOSEDLY this is a bug, according to a user who reported it and got a response back from support about it. Hoping it's true.

In the meantime, make use of Tier 4 Memory Wipe instead; costs more, but does pretty much the same thing.
