I had a former client reach out for a job and I am not quite sure how I want to price it. This is a regional non profit arts org in a major midwestern city.
Here is the breakdown from the email:
"We have solidified a plan for our all-staff retreat and are hoping you may be free and interested in doing photography for us? The date is Tuesday, August 27, 2024. It would entail some group portraits (a group 40+) as well as several smaller groups. We are also still interested in doing some staff portrait headshots for a select group of individuals (probably no more than 10). First, are you available? Would you mind sending me your hourly rate again if so? "
Heathy active and optimistic community, lots of green spaces in nature within the metro and surrounding, GOOD grocery stores.
I feel the same about Austin as a paycheck to paycheck artist that lived there for 8 years (2014 - 2022). I loved the playful energy of the city. From the perspective of a “creative” who made substantially less than you, it’s still the most money I’ve made anywhere as an artist. Also, because Austin is already on the cultural map so to speak, a large portion of the artists there were pretty authentic and down to earth and didn’t operate as if they had something to prove which is kind of present in the two rust belt cities I’ve lived in. Folks in those places kind of feel like they have to show the world they aren’t hicks or something, inferiority complex. And because Austin is so expensive, one weird positive is that most the artists can’t really afford to go to bars every night so they are all out riding bikes and swimming and hiking together. So much fun stuff for free and it’s a lot healthier than chain smoking and binge drinking so the creative scene was filled with attractive, wild, and optimistic people. Idk. I loved Austin. I loved my fun and magical life there.
I 100% do not want corporate entities co-opting iconography and messaging related to sexual preference to sell more product. It’s gross and weird. I think you should spend some time watching the Adam Curtis docuseries The Century of Self.
And also would like to point out that when you talk about blood, sweat, and tears, you’re talking about my blood and sweat and tears quite literally. I’m an elder queer and what I’ve seen be most influential in my lifetime and in my life in particular is being visible, yes, but as a relatable real person and not a gimmick or caricature with main character syndrome which is what feels most prevalent in modern idpol.
The video seemed to be a critique of contemporary pride parades and pride month (rainbow capitalism). As someone who’s been bullied, beat up, and ostracized for being gay.. I clearly know nothing about this.
Yeah I don’t think contemporary pride parades and rainbow capitalism is what’s standing between us and our rights being rolled back.
What you’re saying is that this is a non-traumatized person whose thinking isn’t reactive and isn’t informed by deep rooted trauma and shame? What you’re saying is this is the mindset of a healthy and healed person? Cool, seems like a mindset we should all orient our compasses to.
FWIW I am a 40 year old lesbian who grew up in a small midwestern town in the 80’s and 90’s. Pre social media and online communities. I’ve always conceptualized what healing looked like for me and “the community” and society at large as ultimately finding sexuality and gender boring and trivial things, as simply neutral information. I can’t help but watch this video and feel like it’s a sign of calmer waters ahead.
I don’t think the modern pride parade is what’s standing between queers and legislative annihilation though.
Lots of gay neighbors here in Scarritt Renaissance. I’m one of them.
Kansas City has some of the higher trade wages in the country with low to medium cost of living
Right, temps have been getting warmer and I have been gradually keeping it warmer inside. Obviously I assume the bill would go up but feel like the jump in price is a little dramatic.
Nah. I don’t typically experience as dramatic of price increase as temps have gradually been rising while I have gradually been adjusting what I keep the air on to mitigate energy usage. Relax.
Your photos are really good but from my experience, the demographic of your clientele is frequently self centered, low quality types. The “too fast too furious” sideshow street racer types seem to be entitled and don’t care about other people’s experience.
lol people are SO defensive over something we can all see with our eyes. Y’all walk around with your KC and Chiefs gear tossing your twisted tea cans and fast food wrappers on the ground. I see it happen in real time like once a week at least and see evidence of it every day everywhere I go. My family and out of town guests who are well traveled have all commented about how trashed this city is. Yeah obvi New Orleans is worse but KC is pretty high up there.
I’ve lived in other bigger cities and the trash here is pretty unique. I understand KC isn’t the only city with trash problems but it is within the realm of “trashier” cities. I notice it, and I’ve had out of town guests notice and comment on it. This is the only city I’ve spent time in where I eye witness someone straight throwing trash on the ground on a regular basis. Every time someone brings this up here there is a chorus of posters who say something along the lines of how other cities have this problem too and it’s an annoying cope. A lot of other cities don’t have this problem as well. Why does such a large chunk of the population here have no problem throwing litter on the ground?
In the past I have charged them $250 per hour so thats why she asked that. I'm wondering if I should structure my pricing differently for this type of gig though.
Why do none of these places have a retail brick and mortar?
What is with the fatality rate at Great Smokey Mountains??
Soil Service was the place I experienced this!
I’m in KC. The nursery in question is Soil Service.
Omg that would be the dream !
Long time Texans who love Texas, what other state would you move to if you had to?
