Cremation is the way to go.

My family (uncle & 3 cousins) is in the business. It’s a racket with huge markups. Cremate me and call it a day.

I’ve seen other posts where federal tax bills come up 1-3 years after an estate is closed.

Consult an attorney or r tax consultant for advice.

Meanwhile, get the detailed billing info from the billers and contact Medicare to see why they didn’t cover those extra charges. It’s frequently a billing error.

Also, find out if she had Medicare original plus a supplemental plan or Medicare advantage insurance. The hospital may need to bill a supplemental policy.

I’d go to r/medicare or r/healthinsurance for additional advice on the hospital bills.

In my teens…my folks found it to be less expensive to insure my siblings and I on an old beater car with liability only. It was replaced once with another old beater car after the 3rd accident.

This might be an option to consider.

Yes, they are at risk. Check to see if someone has fraudulently created an IRS.gov account using your social security number. Income tax fraud is more common than most realize. If it hasn’t been created, create one asap to prevent theft.

Seriously considering checking your credit reports for fraudulent accounts.

You should contact a lawyer. California property laws and marital laws are unique. You should ask about the “what if’s” like if you get married, if she gets divorced or dies while married.

Also ask about living will decisions in case she becomes incapacitated, and can’t make decisions on her own. Does she have her husband as her POA over her financial and medical decisions. What situations can occur that require your sister to approve as co-owner, but now the husband has all the power over your sister’s half?

Ask about placing it in a trust to protect it from each other’s current and future spouses or common law partners.

I hear you. The lack of sunlight can really mess with your mood. I moved from Michigan to the southeast 28 years ago. It’s cloudy in Michigan from October until the following April. I recall a driving trip from the thumb area, heading to Tennessee. The sun wasn’t visible until we hit Cincinnati. I decided to move at that point. The Midwest is great in so many aspects, except the cloudy days.

Until you make a decision, see your doctor about vitamin D3 to help with your low mood; and adding light therapy to your daily routine. The combination made a difference for me when I lived there, and it’s better than the doctor’s first choice of antidepressants.

You may find the light therapy will make the winters more tolerable.

Great concept but it doesn’t contain basic info. The correct answer is $240 for Medicare part b. You source file is not current.

According to your tool:

I’m not selling or representing this company but I use Senior Savings Network for Medicare services. The owner is an independent agent, BUT… he represents multiple insurance companies - not just one. They’ve helped me and my parents a lot. It’s one stop shopping for quotes and info; and I’ve found the reps to be very patient and helpful.

Reach out to see if they’re licensed in your state.

Lastly, check to see if you qualify for Medicaid in your state, or other savings programs thru them. I’ve helped a couple of low income senior neighbors get on Medicaid. Once approved, the Medicaid programs paid their part b premiums and the 20% not covered by Medicare. It’s worth checking.

  1. CFBP is great resource. As executor, you should be allowed access to her credit bureau history. Note: there are more than the 3 well known Equifax, Experian and TransUnion.

    • Chex Systems maintains info on consumer bank account information.

CFPB Consumer Reporting https://www.consumerfinance.gov/consumer-tools/credit-reports-and-scores/consumer-reporting-companies/companies-list/

There are different bureaus/agencies that maintain info related to the following:

  • NATIONWIDE CONSUMER REPORTING COMPANIES
    • EMPLOYMENT SCREENING
    • TENANT SCREENING
    • CHECK AND BANK ACCOUNT SCREENING
    • PERSONAL PROPERTY INSURANCE
    • UTILITIES
  1. Unclaimed Property - check your state tax revenue office website for her name.

Contact your local State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP). They will spend as much time as you need to understand it all.

Contact your local State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) representatives. They will take as much time you need to understand the benefits.

Ask if you qualify for any savings programs for disabled individuals under 65 like QDWI or FDBE.

ETA: when it’s time to purchase … reach out to an insurance broker… not an agent.
Generally, a broker represents multiple insurance companies; and agents typically represent only one company. It will save you lots of time calling different companies.

Medicare: Agents vs Broker

Senior Savings Network is very helpful. Give them a call to see if they are able to meet your needs. Westphall is an independent broker, licensed in most, if not all states.

You can look up providers participation status on your insurance company website, call customer service or ask the providers office if the doctor you will see is in-network.

Understanding Health Insurance Provider Networks

Let’s start with the basics.

What is the name of the company and policy type info ( no numbers) listed on your card? Your Medicaid policy is more than likely an HMO or PPO type.

And it’s part of one of the regions on page 6 I referenced earlier.

Understanding Health insurance Playlist

Reading, asking questions and understanding your benefits & eob helps you understand it.

The doctor may take Medicaid but you have to make sure the doctor is in the network you’re a member of.

Is the doctor in the network you joined?
Or part of your Regional organization or managed care plan?

See the Regional Organization section page 6 of your member benefit handbook.

Meanwhile, call the providers office to find out why you were charged 39$, then an additional 139$
