I play piano full time. Lots of playing for college students who need a pianist in their lessons, for recitals, and for various classes (diction, opera workshop, voice ensemble, choirs, area choirs, solo and ensemble etc.)

I do whatever I want in the morning, have a flexible schedule at the college and generally feel very free. I usually practice 2 hrs a day or less outside of my in-person commitments.

During the summer I hang out, volunteer, take a camp job, or do a trade.

I would struggle to go back to working at fixed times and I'm proud of myself for developing my music career.

My goal now is to add more outside work doing handyman stuff, more low volt/IT stuff, etc. I didn't have a car this academic year but I saved up and bought one just now. That will help me do a variety of jobs helping grandmas or whatever.

I don't regret my choices. Retirement is a future specter, but I believe in my skills and will keep earning more money with a variety of work prospects.

Also just watch youtube vids on a topic you're interested in. You'll get a lot of context from that!

You'd be surprised what you can pick up on. When you're on a jobsite you're in an environment with lots of people who did it for a while, and you hear the general talk about the job overall. You'll learn a lot! I think working a trade for two years was a great reset for me, and it might be for you too.

Just being around it will give you skills for the rest of your life. You'll get better at fixing stuff at home, working on your car, troubleshooting electronics-- anything.

If you're unsure, go do a day for habitat for humanity. My peeps were very nice and it's low pressure. There's a variety of jobs for those- floor scraping, buffing, and vacuuming. Laying flooring. Cabinets. Painting. Whatever.

It might give you some context or build up your confidence. I can't believe your parents didn't support you. But you CAN change and grow. Life doesn't go in a straight line and honestly, you're doing great for keeping up the job you had before.

Go to a liberal church. Unitarian or evangelical even. Frequent coffee shops and you probably make friends with regulars. 

You don’t have to be religious in a pedestrian way or even care. Lmk if you need more detail in what I mean by that. 

Unitarian attendees are often humanist, atheist, and other. 

Find a community choir. Habitat for humanity builds? I’m trying that next week.

Or you can go new school and into a hyper ordinary sublimity. Ie nondual/hindu stuff. I worked into some interesting states with Adyashanti.

I would commonly get into no ego perception after anxiety attacks too. 

I don’t study philosophy anymore but still chew on comparative religion and soteriology sometimes. Christianity as a psychological allegory can be good. There’s actual content there if you interpret Jesus as a psychological archetype. 

Dreaming and jungian studies can be interesting. Dreams are very numinous, but you have to recall and write them down upon awakening. The vibe is so interesting in your dreams, and people on Jung subreddits sag interesting things about them too. 

Now I just settle on Taoist/zen ordinariness  and “life as lived” as a good lens. 

Even psychoanalysis (Sartre, Betty Cannon, Rogers) or gestalt therapy can be good secular directions to reopen your thought habits. CBT or REBT is also insightful.
