I'm not an old HxH and just recently got into it. Before reading it, I've read countless revenge story. Some are good like Shark, Vinkand Saga, & Berserk. And the other are terrible and a self insert. So when I just finish the Yorknew City Arc, I realize how good HxH are.
First, the mc are an actual character. In other revenge story, the mc is just a serial killer/Jigsaw. But Kurapika is not that, it's not shown in the 2011 adaptation, but in 1999, Kurapika pray in Kurta's tradition. It shows that he realize that no matter how terrible of a person the Troupe was, he still commit a murder. In other story, the mc is not even bugged by this. They're just homelander with jigsaw twisted mind.
Second, the antagonist are an actual character. Usually, the target for revenge is depicted as the worst human beings on the planet, but the Troupe is not that. Sure, they kill a bunch of people, but they're not taking joy of it and did it out of profesionality. Kurapika even mention that they didn't care about the amount of people they kill. They also not a pure monstermonster and still have good side. Like how they mourn the death of one of them and how Pakunoda sacrifice herself.
Third, the antagonist also pose a threat. The antagonist will usually cry like a bitch after getting beaten by the protagonist until eventually got killed. In Kurapika Vs Uvogin fight, we see something different. Uvogin didn't beg for his life, he's protecting his friends until his last breath. The story also not a hunt for each member. Imagine how boring it will be if the Kurapika Vs Uvogin fight is repeated over and over with different Troupe member until they're die.
Fourth, the story shows the consequences of revenge. In most of this story, the mc got a power that they didn't earn and goes on a killing spree upon those who wrong them. Kurapika may got overpowered ability, but he has to pay a high price for it. When he founds out the Troupe are all dead, he felt empty, he felt like all of his hardwork are for nothing. He drowns in an indescribable emptiness, just like how Askeladd got killed in front of Thorfinn.
Despite how fun his character is, I'm gonna admit he deserves to get thrown to jail.
Remember when he states at Gon and Killua's butt? Remember when he got boner while looking at Gon?
Talking about Hisoka here is annoying.
